    I feel bad for his sister, knowing he was her son and she couldn’t tell him but you can see the pride and love she had for him. He was such a handsome guy and so charming and funny. I always say I was born in the wrong era, I wish I was born in the 40s. I was born 35 years too late. 😄 RIP Bobby. ❤️

    If you have read Dodd Darin's book about his parents you know that Bobby's sister Nina is actually his mother. Bobby didn't learn the truth until the late 60's. Knowing it now the look
    Nina is giving is the look of a proud mother.

      Jack Nicholson also came to learn that his "sister" was in fact his mother. I believe he was told by a reporter who was preparing a cover story about him for Time magazine. Anyway he was understandably shattered.

      @@jessiem276 We are talking about the 1930s, correct? The social scandal and isolation from the community would have been horrific. Also likely isolation from their church. She would have probably been asked to leave school at age 13 or 14, or sent to a school for "wayward" girls. This was a family that was already struggling with a widow trying to be head of household, dealing with grief, dealing with her disability. If her daughter becomes a neighborhood scandal, how does she finish school? What jobs are available to a young woman who becomes known as the scandalous girl of the neighborhood? Just food for thought, an indicator of how far we have come although we still have far to go, and determination that we must never allow anyone to roll back rights that others suffered to obtain.

      OMG his sister was his mother? I had a middle school student whose "mom" told me something similar, then asked me to keep the secret. Of course I did, but never felt good about it and really wished that this grandmother had not dragged me into her lie. The young man was/is very intelligent but constantly in trouble. I feel he knew that he was being lied to, but just couldn't figure who or what or why. I do understand that the grandmother was trying to protect her family from social scandal and isolation that would have had some consequences in the 1970s, but ... Truth is usually the way to go.

      What made it even more hurtful was the way Bobby found out about his sister really being his mother. It was after Bobby got involved with Bobby Kennedy's 1968 presidential campaign. He toyed with the idea of entering politics himself. At that time “sister” Nina approached Bobby with the actual circumstances of his parentage. She said she didn’t want it to be discovered if there were background checks, snooping, etc if he got into the political area. He was totally blindsided.

Not perfect, but neither is anyone else. Be glad we had Walden Robert Cassotto [if memory serves, always a hit or miss prospect] for as long as we did. That wasn't the only cause of depression for Bobby (who, to his credit, never let it interfere with what he gave to his audiences). He was deeply affected by the murders of JFK and especially RFK, who he knew. That was when America ended, for a lot of us.

      I don't quite understand the depression at finding out Nina was his mother and his "mother" was his grandmother. I get that it would have been a shock, but it didn't change that they both loved him very much. His mother and grandmother raised him together, and he didn't miss anything except knowing who his real father was. But he had never known a father anyway, so that wasn't really a huge loss. So again, I'm not quite sure I understand.

  • @ValleyoftheRogue
    @ValleyoftheRogue 10 років тому +13

    Bobby had nothing to do with Nina after she told him the truth in 1968 when he had talked about embarking on a political career. His son Dodd, as I recall from his book, believed that NIna's husband was actually Bobby's real dad. I don't doubt this at all, for he resembled both him and Nina.
    There is no justification for lying, but this kind of deception was not unheard of during the time he was a young child.

    • @izvidz7078
      @izvidz7078 7 років тому +4

      I've read the book (its a good one). I believe Dodd says Charlie Maffia used to say to everyone he was Bobby's father but its unlikely as it sounds like he only started going out with Nina just after Bobby's birth. Not impossible but unlikely. Also why hide the birth like they did (they moved when Nina couldn't hide her pregnancy any longer) if the father was around and willing as Charlie would have been.
      However Dodd also says that in every other respect (working damn hard and caring for the sick child) he WAS his Dad.

      @raptureready5004 6 років тому +2

      That was do wrong. Oh my gosh his mom, Nina, still brought him into this world, and did the best she could.

    It is said that Nina, who is Bobby's real Mother, never revealed to her son who his Father was. I think that Bobby looks exactly like Nina's husband (who at the time of this film Bobby thought was his brother in law, but later found out was his stepfather) Just look at their hairlines, the noses, the creases in the face, and bottom lips, I would put money on that being Bobby's real father. Perhaps Nina didn''t want Bobby to know it was him in case he got angry for getting his Mother pregnant as such an early age?

    What you are calling "private" was common knowledge at the time, particularly regarding his heart issues that came about as a result of his contracting Rheumatic Fever at the age of 7. Also, despite the "surprise" aspect of the show, all parties involved had to consent to appear and to the topics covered. So, all that "private" stuff was never really all that "private".

    So the great did have a little acting background. Because there are some individuals and Darin is one of them who are off the fucking charts natural in acting and he is just that. Had he chose to be a character, maybe not the main star type actor I can easily see best supporting actor awards for this man. He was so talented, anything in entertainment this man could do. And now I know why, he was simply born smart. He's one of the few Democrats I respect, sorry, I just had to throw that political stuff in! But I love this guy!

      A very heartless comment...The times they lived in were filled with people who looked down on women giving birth out of wedlock....The pain in her face on this show reveals her conflict.....You must have been a spoiled brat growing up and critical people like yourself are the reason people go to such lengths to avoid having people like you look down on them..You and the 9 who liked your callousness show the depth of your depravity..

      @@TheLionessjudah When I was in high school in the late '60s, it was still deeply shameful to be pregnant while unmarried. Girls who got pregnant were immediately whisked off "to stay with an aunt," which was actually a home for unwed mothers. The babies ware placed for adoption. The movie Philomena showed how babies were brutally torn away from their teenaged mothers and placed for adoption. Philomena's baby was taken from her in 1951.

    Had no idea his sister was actually his mom. I guess being interested in politics as he was maybe that secret had to come out before, if Bobby had ran for office. Someone would have found out maybe used that information in a bad light.. How devastating that must've a been for him. I can't imagine knowing your not going to live long life and then deciding to accomplish as much as he did. Thanks for aharing

    Nobody knew ANYTHING about Nina/Bobby until many years later, after he died in 1973, so don't hang this on Ralph Edwards, please. And this show was really good, an oral history of sorts, about famous and non-famous people. People criticizing should keep their mouths shut since it's obvious they don't know what they are talking about.
