- TAG Heuer is one of the most recognized watch brands around. But it's fallen out of favor with watch enthusiasts over the years. That may have changed this year with the release of the TAG Heuer Carrera "Glassbox" in 39mm. It's even been called the best TAG Heuer in years.

My wife bought me the blue dial for my 60th birthday in June just love it what a beautiful watch
I'm wearing the blue variation right now. I enjoy wearing it as much as I do 3861 speedy. In fact I think this is the best release of W&W '23.
This watch wasn't on my radar at all. I didn't even know about it. I was in a shopping center in Century City to check out a store for a baby stroller, and I walked by a TAG boutique and saw this in the window. It immediately caught me off guard. I tried it on and fell in love with it. This watch is amazing.
IMO you guys should let Brandon do this segment, his videos are some of the best on the watch industry and are exactly what we want from a week on the wrist.
Sorry but this watch is perfect to have Tony Traina present. He has a lot of knowledge about the vintage Carrera's and would in my mind be a better fit
@@Sparklingwater1231i think he is perfect to talk about the watch, but this feels more like a normal watch review that you would see on any channel, don't get me wrong i think he is a great journalist, i just don't think the week on the wrist segment fits him, but i would love to see him talk more about vintage watches

This watch definitely deserved the week on the wrist treatment. The new glass box Carrera 39mm models are the best TAG Heuer release in years. I felt that way before the Skipper was released, for which I have extreme fondness. These are so great on wrist, and actually do feel like they're worth the price of admission. I can't say the same for some of the previous, slightly larger Carrera chronographs. The date position is odd, but I'm okay with it. I also definitely appreciate the comparisons with competitors, though it was odd to include a visual of a 3 hander IWC vs. the chronograph.

This watch is fantastic, but the skipper is even better!
I have this one and love it. Really like the skipper as well and almost went for it instead. The only thing is that I have not seen it in person so did not want to take a risk. I still wouldn't mind adding it to the collection, but that new DATO they just released is pretty nice too! I might just wait and see if it comes in a different shade.

I do like the way this looks(especially the blue dial) and in terms of their fit and finish it has always been good, the issue has been with their movements but they have been addressing this as of late…I’m going to take a look at it for my own collection.
There's no issue with this movement. It's rock solid and insanely accurate.

Stick with vintage 2447, unless you like to throw 50% of the watch value's money down the train.
@@I_like_YT_lotscan always buy used. I bought my IWC Pilot Chrono and Breitling Superocean used for half or less than half their MSRP. Both still running great after 2 years of owning them.

I love what Tag Heuer has been doing with these Glassbox models, my favorite is the new 2024 Carrera with the Panda dial. It's like they finally found that perfect balance between vintage design inspiration and modern construction.
When i try other brands in this range I always come back to Tag. The fit / finish and design are the most satisfying on my wrist. The monza all black titanium is a personal tag favorite. The unique shape of the monza, vintage dial with red accents is fantastic! I think i may go for this new carrera in the blue for my collection as I’m lacking a great blue watch.
TAG Heuer is a sleeping giant. It could be so great.

I own it too and agree. One more tweak would be to make the subdials less shinny for better legibility as well. All in all one of my favorite watches in my collection!

You're right the silver subdials plus the silver little chronograph hands do blend together a bit too well. Still readable but sometimes not at a glance. Even the black tick markers disappear on that silver subdial in less than optimal lighting.
Not a big deal for me though because i haven't really used the chronograph to time anything...yet 😂
The legibility issue is REAL, whether (quite notoriously) on the date window, or on the sub register hands, evidently! But still, the "glass box" effect is quite beautiful.
@@ryangochuico - Funny you should ask. I service and restore vintage timepieces; primarily Seiko. I put my new Carrera glass box on my timegrapher and was a bit disappointed in the timing from the factory. Not hateful. I think it was running around -6 to -10 per day. I cracked mine open a did a bit of fine regulating myself. Would not recommend that for the average person.

I got this exact model back in july. Very happy with it. I do wish it was offered on a bracelet since my sweaty wrists just kills leather straps.
The th20-00 movement has impressive timekeeping and mine ran consistently at +1 second per day during my 1 week testing/honeymoon period. The domed sapphire crystal is very enjoyable to look at. The nice sharp angles on the high polished lugs really gives a feeling of luxury.
The date at 12 o'clock is a welcome quirk for me. It makes the dial symmetrical and tucks the date away when it is not needed. If i do need to see the date, 1 press of the chrono pusher will reveal the hidden date window and the reset button will cover it back up again.
This was a winning release in my opinion. Too bad it didn't win in the iconic category in the gphg. Tough competition hehe.😊
FYI. The 3 hand carrera bracelet fits and looks great.

Yes. I bought the GlassBox several months back as well. A couple of months back the TH boutique in Newport Ca had put it on the bracelet from the 3 hand Carrera. Looks great.

A real return to form for TAG Heuer. Sure, the watch snobs won’t be impressed, but….. so what!!
I would say the Top Time B01/B09 and Premier would be a competitor here.
Appreciate the host and his solid review, but his vocal fry and raising pitch made every statement sound unsure and like a question, which impacted the overall presentation.

Glassbox Carrera, Speedmaster 57, B01 Navitimers, 1165XX and 1265XX Daytonas. All four have grown up now.
Just waiting for Zenith to introduce an updated cal 400, and Seiko to update a proper successor to their 6138 6139 calibres.
The seiko and Zenith are originally from a completely different era (70s instead of 50s / early 60s with the others). I would love a reissue of an Zenith 146hp from the era.
The zenith cal 400 you mention is still very much a winner compared to the modern day rivals. Date application, 36000bph, thinness(!), integrated automatic column wheel movement

The big pilot is a chrono? Am I missing something?
He forgot two other competitors: Longines Avigation Big Eye with auto column wheel vertical clutch under $3K or Hanhart 417 ES Flyback manual wind column wheel vertical clutch under $2500. Both with history behind them as well!
The Longines is much bigger in diameter and thickness
@@roycedot bigger diameter yes it’s 41 and a hair thicker. Hanhart makes in 39 and 42 and thinner. Just two other column wheel chronos to consider!
Big Eye is good, but the Glassbox is infinitely more stylish.

Is it safe to let the chrono hand run continuously all day? How would it effect the power reserve? Would doing so risk wearing down the gears or increasing the chance of damage from being banged around?
I'd save for the Speedy. The blue Glassbox is better yet not perfect due to the white date wheel.
Mine runs slow every day. The crown clicks when I wind it. So I guess it will have to go back. I can’t find any info if that’s normal.

Love everything about this watch but the date. They should have just left it out before putting it at the 12 position.
The price is crazy
“None of them have the clean, classy, design driven inspiration that the glass box has”. I do like the glass box, I’m considering it, but this statement is down right silly when you’re putting it up against a speedy moonwatch lol.
Paying full price for this watch feels foolish. Just get a barely used Speedy reduced for half the price. Better looking, better Heritage, and the date isn’t at the f*cking 12 o’clock.

To be honest, I'm surprised you mentioned in this video the biggest problem that this watch has: its predecessors.
It's a good looking watch, and if it's mechanically reliable I can't really fault it much. I'd even say it's the best looking Carrera Tag has made in a while.
But, and this is a big 'but', mentioning the original Carreras in the beginning of the video showcases what this watch has to live up to. And for me, it doesn't.
The original Carreras (and the '90s reissues) were smaller, they were manual wind, they were much thinner and the dials were the definition of legibility. They were also quite affordable. By comparison, this watch seems clunky (14mm is quite tall), not very easy to read, and expensive. It also seems to be in two minds about what it is with the display caseback.
Overall, I would say this is probably one of the best watches in Tag's current catalog, but compared to its lineage, I can't help but feel disappointed.
I think IWC big pilot 43 is $8,950 not $7,600 as the video states, right?
Also the one pictured is not a chronograph, so why even bring it up??

Why is the Big Pilot in contention when it's not a chronograph? Did he mean the Pilot chronograph? Details matter. The review is fine but for some reason the delivery felt robotic...

I'm sorry don't want to talk smack beacause its such a perfect watch with beautiful dimensions but the 12 date dial WTFFFFF IS THAT- They could have put it on one of the subdials at 6 the way Breitling does or not at all. Stunning watch not a fan of the blue- the black dial is stunning

I find it quite beautiful overall, but undoubtedly overpriced, compared to what the market is offering on that money slot. The legibility (lack of!) is a REAL issue, both with the sub register dials and the date, and I don't believe Mr Jack Heuer would have approved it, as history have shown us he learned from his mistake with "his" 3147.
It's not overpriced, it's 6.5k in the US. You're getting a heritage brand, an iconic watch, and a fully in-house chronograph. It's less than a Speedmaster.

@@ams914 Sir, in principle I absolutely agree with your arguments, but I only wish they were fungible... You see, besides all design flaws (that NEED to be addressed, as they make this a lesser product than it's competitors), the "in house" thing it's not really important, as we all know it's more of a marketing tool. Thus, in sum, besides the stunning glass house effect, the Speedmaster is a way better timepiece, and it only cost marginally a bit more. Cheers!

If anyone is looking for a cheaper alternative, I like the look of the Longines Conquest Chronograph. It's a bit bigger, but nearly half of what the TAG costs.

Three things to get me to buy it: Get rid of the 'Tag' on the dial and make HEUER bigger. Then sign the name 'HEUER' on the crown. Then sign the buckle 'HEUER'. Otherwise - no sale.
No. Tag Heuer need to embrace “techniques avant guard” and not be ashamed of anything. It’s your perception which has to change - not Tag Heuer. They should never release another watch without the full name ever again.

It has a cheaply stamped dial, no display case back, no drilled lugs, no decorated movement. Quality control issues. Comes in an ugly green box and yet the fans will pay way over msrp for mediocrity.

Great watch, they just need to drop the vintage look. They need to be innovative and iconic. If you want a vintage Heuer you can buy one for less.
I think you'd be surprised to learn that there's significant demand for a Vintage Heuer look with the reliability of a new and modern movement.
Depends which one. A Vintage Heuer 2447NST (which is what this is based on) fetches for around $13k - 20k depending on condition.
Worst take ever. "Drop the vintage look." LOL, that's what TAG was doing when it was awful. Now they're coming back.
