Hi Christine thank you so much for those videos to show people how it is behind the scenes works i myself am a stage staff of Royal Caribbean i have done my first contract on Mariner Of The Seas from December till July now am going to Allure Of The Seas hope to get the rig assist training and be rig assistant, it's an amazing job specially center stage that's my favorite show so far. keep rocking
Great video. Not just from FOH Audio perspective. After 2 decades of TV audio in the field I started doing FOH corporate and now some music. I like hearing how SMPTE TC for the show works for lights and prod mgr. And click for musulicians with Ableton. Great behind the scenes stuff.
Amazing videos so far! As a soon sound technician here in México this videos are such great help and inspirational for my future career. Keep up the good work!
Hey, thank you so much for posting this, I'm about to join celebrity cruises, most of the edge class ships are rather similar so this really helped in preparing me for my first contract!
@Christine Caldbeck yeah, I'm considering doing one of these day in a life vids when I get onboard since there is so little info and since the job is so unique
So is everything automatic from that abelton file? Or does it just prompt you to physically mute and unmute things, adjust levels, the lighting engineer to physically turn on states etc.? Like are you still riding faders? Fascinated by this.
Everything is supposed to run itself. All mics unmute themselves so I just get to focus on the mix. But again all the levels are set for each song so I’m just in charge of making sure nothing goes wrong
Hi Christine, my name is Adrian and I am an ex Entertainment Technical Manager on Carival Cruise Line. I just subscribed to your channel, your videos are bringing back so many nice memories. I am very interested to see how the Entertainment Technical department is structured on Royal and compare it to Carnival. I am helping Cast-a-way Cruise and Resort Hiring Agency to recruit Entertainment Technicians for different cruise lines. If that's ok with you, i will start sending links to your videos to future ship techs. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see new videos!
Hi Adrian, absolutely! Share it with who ever you think will find it helpful. I know I would have liked to have seen this before starting. Am always happy to help out the techs 😊
Hey Adrian. I am looking for a opportunity for Cruise Ship Sound Tech jobs, can you recommend me this Cruise Hiring Agency or where can I find these kind of job offers?
The SD8 is a mighty desk! Do you just load different scenes based on the SMPTE throughout the show that were pre-programmed or you also have to do your gain staging, EQing, etc? Also I'm curious to what PA you guys are running there? Keep up the good work!
We actually do both set ups. For the show in the video above, that is all preprogrammed. All the gains and EQ’s. That is done during the week of instal. Other guest entertainers will come in and they would never be running SMPTE shows or anything like that so that is all from scratch
Love this. would you mind showing us how are you setup the layout of the digico? which groups, custom layer you use, which which reverb and delay you are using? And do you have any tips when mixing a show? Thank you - coming from an audio engineer student. Thanks.
Hey Nathan, I have left the ship but I do have more videos about set ups incoming. I do have some more specific content on the DigiCo coming up. I’ll also try to do more about mixing tips along the way Thanks for your interest 🥰
HELLO THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO, QUICK QUESTION, IN THAT SPECIFIC SHIP, BRILLIANCE, CAN YOU BE IN PASSENGER AREAS WHEN NOT WORKING? IF SO, UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES?
I like your content Christine, I had never seen video how is behind the show, I understood a bit Adrian's work, but I was left with two doubt please: 1) What are the knowledge and requirements to apply to Stage Staff? 2) DOES THE SCENERY THAT HAS TO BE ASSEMBLED REQUIRE INSTALLING AND SCREWING THINGS, OR THAT DOES NOT THE STAGE STAFF DO THAT?
As musician with studio experience, and regular cruiser, I have a question of concern that you may be able to answer. As I'm sure you are aware, in industry the 'safe' loudness limit is 85db, over which ear protectors must be legally provided. This is not a matter of earing sensitivities, it is a matter of safety & law. I am constantly horrified, throughout many popular cruise lines that the production show levels are well in excess of 100db, and nobody seems to care. I often see children in the audience with hands over their ears - their parents unaware that it is causing them long term damage. If I understand you correctly, the settings as provided for the prerecorded production shows are set in stone, and you may not have any control over the loudness. Years ago, when I regularly played in bands, the venues would sometimes have a cut out meter that effectively killed the sound if it was over the 'safe' limit. These days. many of us have free sound meters on our mobiles (but they must be callibrated to get meaningful results.) The cruise industry promotes the mantra, 'Your saftey is our main concern' but clearly that does not include one's hearing. I often wonder if, once at sea, certain regulations which apply on land, no longer apply? Do you ever monitor the actual loudness levels as part of your job?
Hi Keith, this is an excellent point and I highly agree with everything you are saying. I have to say it depends on the sound technician. We are told to abide by the 85 dB rule, however, if a sound tech decides to ignore it then it is rare they are reprimanded for it. If it gets to a point where it is way too loud in every show sometimes the boss’s will have to step in. Production Managers, Cruise Directors, Hotel Directors etc. Also, if enough guests complain then something will be done about it. Guest reviews are often listened to.
@@christinecaldbeck Hi Christine. Thanks for your reply. It's good to know that the issue is on the radar. I guess if someone sued the cruise line for negligence, things would be tightened up. (Don't worry it won't be me). On our most recent cruise (QM2) the production shows sounded to me as if a limiter was in use (I could hear some audio artifacts) - the sound had lost it's 'punch' but at least it was at a safe level. I wonder if this was the case.
Well there is no minimum age specifically for the job as a sound technician. It more so depends on experience. The minimum working age requirement for the company I work with is 18 I believe but I would have to double check that.
Yep, I am also mixing the onstage monitors and sending the the hear back system on stage. The musicians have their own personal hear back system they can use to get a more specific mix. They mainly use this for click
I love this job... IM interesting job like u.. I have a background soundengginer on tv station 12 years. Im 44 olds, can i apply sound technician to shipcruisser..??
what an an awesome tour and insight
I hope you continue to make videos as i have come to enjoy your channel thank you for sharing with us all.

Allure is a great ship! Best of Luck with the rig training I know that’s a great way to get to know the ins and outs of the production shows 🙌

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Just trying to give people the best idea of what the job entails 😊
I like the way you connect your dots
Thank you so much for such in depth videos. Glad to see what really happens in the background there ! Keep them coming, we really love them
More to come!
becoming you fan. thanks for sharing

Really glad you enjoyed it! Just making videos I would have liked to have seen before I started out 😊
Greetings from an ex sound techincian from MSC! I might be embarking to Royal! I have an interview soon.
Greetings from Argentina.
Best of luck!
Greeting from Canada! Thank you for this very interesting video
amazed the cruise companies invest so much in their gear was expecting some old yamaha m7cl or something! good insight video , fair play to you!
Oh gosh! No they do like to spend on the good equipment. Yamaha M7 would have no chance of running what we were doing 😂
Hey, thank you so much for posting this, I'm about to join celebrity cruises, most of the edge class ships are rather similar so this really helped in preparing me for my first contract!
Glad you found it informative. I know getting information about ship work as a sound tech can be tough. Happy you enjoyed it 😊
@Christine Caldbeck yeah, I'm considering doing one of these day in a life vids when I get onboard since there is so little info and since the job is so unique
Can you do a video of how you became a professional sound technician?
You do a great job!!!
Yes, once my contract is over I’m going to make a video about how I got this job and everything you need to know. Thank you for watching ☺️
Informative stuff 💥

However it is rare that the job ends up being that easy. I do sit riding the faders a bit and keeping the band level right
absolutely amazing, keep it up.

Haha that is a fact!

Hello Christine! Do you also run paper techs? If so, how often do you guys do it? 😊
Hi! Do you also work with signange and ITV specialist or with the multimedia specialist?
No, we have a Broadcast department on board that we work with from time to time
HELLO THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO, QUICK QUESTION, IN THAT SPECIFIC SHIP, BRILLIANCE, CAN YOU BE IN PASSENGER AREAS WHEN NOT WORKING? IF SO, UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES?
We are allowed to use certain guest areas as long as we have our name badge on. It also depends on our striped ranking.

@@christinecaldbeck Thanks Christine☺ I will wait that video
Thanks for the gemreat vids Christie.
I just want to know is vaccine compulsory for Royal carribean workers?
I am not certain of this but they do provide the vaccinations on board and they ask for your certificate. But I am unsure if it is mandatory
