What’s wrong with Axel’s voice is simple…..4 decades of of top note singing with power hammers your voice over time at that level. His voice still comes through , but the high notes with power have gone. Very understandable considering his career. He has had it , one of the best and unique voices of all time, especially in the hard rock arena. The man was at the top of the game for years , has earned superstardom, rock legendary status and his money. 🎤🎼🎸 He is entitled to be a bit rough voice wise , because the man has done it all . Some do it , some talk about it. End of.

Axl was one of the best screaming grit high note singers of all time in his prime. He was certified nuts and it came through on stage. His prime was a short period because of his signing style and perhapd lifestyle. Axl still fills big venues while youtubers sit in their recliners. I better get up. Klaus Meine started in scorpions 1970 , his voice is only now getting slightly weak . He was still at the top of his game at 70. AND he had voice surgery in 1981 . It comes down starting with a solid good voice ( not relying on any falsetto) then taking good care of that voice . I don't know of Axels routines but I know from day one I was suspect of his approach...he sang properly in some areas but strained ridiculously in others . That show at the Ritz was phenomenal...but if you continue to do wild banshee screams and falsetto you won't be able to sustain it . Rob Halford , Brian Johnson ...two guys that never really sang properly- their voices are shot today . Bon Jovi I always knew he was a bit nasal but never knew his voice would blow out .
I don't know vocal techniques from shinola , but all the singers that I thought weren't quite right in their heyday are all shot today . Klaus Meine and Ronnie Dio were very professional and took care of their voice . Ronnie was great till the end and Klaus is amazing for his age .

I have seen him live several times from 1988-2021. He had total disregard for his voice during the first 5 years. He was a banshee running around like his hair was on fire, screaming at the top of his lungs and boy was it fantastic, but there’s a price to be paid for that. I saw him in 2002. Thought he sounded great. That’s the thing I watch these videos and when I’m at the concert he certainly sounds better. Has the voice changed sure but too many people who don’t go to the shows are awfully critical. The last show I was at was at MetLife Stadium in 2021. He was fantastic. The guy is 61 years old. He does three hours shows his songs are extremely difficult to sing, how many people do you know are singing coma, estranged rocket queen welcome to the jungle you could be mine the songs r not easy. He then absolutely killed AC/DC much better than Brian Johnson that’s not even open for debate. He was also phenomenal on the Bon Scott stuff at the same time he was doing GNR. Is he 1988 Axl? Probably not but he’s an icon. He’s one of the best ever do it instead of criticizing him go to the shows they’re still great.

Axl's voice changed a lot during the years, having ups and downs, but at the beggining of 2022 tour all the fans were concerned and I personally thought this was the end. He managed to recover to a better place, still far away from 1993 or 2016, but manageable. For sure he has some kind of problem or permanent damage, he does not do it on purpose. A smart thing he did on 2023 tour is moving to a setlist with more songs on a lower key, where he still has this unique voice and it is intact.

  • @LioFuzz
    @LioFuzz 11 місяців тому +24

Axl Rose appears to be confronting vocal challenges in the realm of tenor and high tenor ranges. However, his performance showcases exceptional proficiency when he delves into the depths of the lower and baritone registers. It might be an advantageous strategy for him to consider adapting his musical pieces entirely within these lower ranges. By doing so, Axl has the potential to produce a captivating and innovative auditory experience that highlights a distinct facet of his vocal capabilities, thus presenting his audience with a novel and engaging rendition.

  • @Stinkydo0d
    @Stinkydo0d Рік тому +221

Axl's voice has been off since late 2016. The last truly good vocal year for him was 2010. 2011-2013 was awful. 2014 he was getting stronger and stronger, then the tour ended. 2016, he started out careful, but he got better and better, and AC/DC gave us the best screams he's done in YEARS. Then after the AC/DC tour ended, I noticed a change in Axl's voice. His rasp in GNR, that was getting steadily stronger and stronger was suddenly getting worse. I think he pushed himself too hard for AC/DC. This year, it came to a head, and he admitted his voice has been giving him problems. Good thing, too. It seemed like he was trying to use rasp again, but it was just...off. Like, he'd start songs in falsetto, and then start using rasp more and more in the song, then it'd crack, and he'd do this weird...cartoony forced lower, raspy voice. It'd almost sound like Popeye. He said he's been seeing a vocal coach lately, and I guess they had to give him a non-harmful technique. It's just...shameful that it's dragging his legacy through the mud. He's not pleasant to listen to anymore. He was such an incredible powerhouse back then. Maybe he needs a break, idk. He's had many amazing comebacks, 2016 being most-recent. I just hope it's not completely over for him...
EDIT: Okay, 10 months later, they've toured, and Axl has shown so much improvement! His voice is a LOT stronger! He has power behind his singing, I see he's using a different technique that requires him to not jump around so much and focus on breathing, which makes him hold notes a LOT better, and he has great vibrato! And as for his rasp, it's returning, SLOWLY. At this point, we all know how he sounds, Axl knows how he sounds, and I'm sure he knows what we all think of it. He didn't get famous for a Mickey Mouse impression, he got famous for that banshee wail. He's being careful again, but I think he'll get it, if he continues down this road. It's peaking its way in a lot more these days! Axl is a smart man, so I am sure he is doing what it takes to get it back in a careful way.

Simple. He is 60. The GNR repertoire is beyond demanding and hard. And his singing style is even harsh on his vocal chords. He doesn't want to damage his voice beyond repair, and it seems to me that he desires to continue singing for many years. All singers when reaching 35 start cutting down their performances, lowering the keys, singing shorter, trmming down the melodies to lower notes, and the older they get, the more they do it.

His lower and mid range still sound excellent it just sounds to me like he's conserving his energy. He always sings in a very twangy mix/head voice for the high stuff and without any rasp or nasal resonance it pretty much sounds like this guys, had a vocal coach react on another channel saying Axl was just screaming on pitch... Just saw the man yesterday, how he and the Gunners belted out a 3 hour concert on stage. A phenomenal job considering his age. I won't lie, his vocal performance will never be as strong and mesmerizing as it was in the early nineties. BUT: I felt his voice was SIGNIFICANTLY better and more powerful than on the Not in this Lifetime tour I saw in 2017. I actually compared my own recording of SCOM with this clip and and you can definitely say that he still sings this song almost completely in falsetto. Is it as good as '92? Definitely not. Does it suck? Not at all, but it obviously feels different than the original. For one reason or another Axl can't sustain the constant trademark rasp that he always had back then. Let's hope that with better technique/coaching he can continue to keep his voice stable, or hopefully improve it again.

Axl has been singing this way progressively post-2010. He seems to really struggle to carry his vocal fold compression through the passaggio/bridge. If you listen to his voice in 2006, it was immense. 2010 wasn't quite as good but it was pretty close. What he's been doing more and more ever since is going into the light head voice. The problem with most GN'R songs is that they sit right in that difficult pocket for the most part, and because he can't seem to carry any weight into that area of his voice, he just brings his head voice down and it becomes wimpy. And then in songs where he can do it in higher chest voice, you get a yelled sound followed by a noticeable switch in register when he needs to go higher. He sounded really powerful on the ACDC tour because most of their songs stay high, so he could get into the area of his voice and go for it. It's when he has to navigate between chest and head that he struggles - his mixed voice is shot. In 2016 he could at least still bring in the rasp and get a fuller, more powerful sound up top but his rasp seems to be on the wane as well, probably compounded by the lack of good vocal fold compression which obviously makes it harder to actually produce a cool sounding distortion.
The funny thing is that he's having similar issues to what Jon Bon Jovi is, but he's working around it the other way. JBJ is now fully belting (badly) in chest voice as he seems unable to get into his mixed voice anymore (and the songs are tuned down to help him). Axl is singing all the songs in their original tuning, but in order to get to the high notes, is totally forfeiting mixed voice and doing a lighter head voice (not quite falsetto - you can hear there's chord closure, but very light) instead. I noticed their new setlist this year now includes a number of songs where Axl is in chest voice, or is right up there where he's also comfortable. That's probably a good move!

That's exactly what I've been wondering. He seems to have no middle voice. One example is the "new" song Hard School. In the studio he sang it many years ago, perfectly with full voice. Now he does that weird head voice the whole song and it's really poor. For a professional singer that's weird. Maybe he actually has quite bad vocal damage or nodules which affect some part of his range

Brand new to your channel and just subscribed. Learning how to sing is a goal and am so happy to have found an educational vocal channel. Thank you for your objective instruction.
So about Axl. I saw GNR two times in concert during the Use Your Illusion Tour and once almost 20 years later in late 2011 during the Chinese Democracy Tour. His voice and stage presence was magical. His voice as heard on the Tokyo 1992 home concert video was exactly 💯 as I heard him in person.
Just imho from what has been discussed about singers who have vocal problems. Considering his age, years of smoking, the amount of vocal use over 38 years, and lower hormones/metabolism at his age, cardio/pulmonary shape related to exercise or lack thereof, it appears he physically just does not have his "true voice" anymore.
We all get old and lose things and it is miserable to deal with, myself included at 49 years of age.
How one would get their true voice back with these many factors constantly pulling at them seems like it would take a minor miracle. The singer from Cinderella God bless that guy went through multiple surgeries to help allegeded singing injuries.
Axl has created a music collection half of which I would be eternally grateful to God for have given me the talent and circumstances to have created. People just want to see that band in concert even with Axl's voice completely off. Their touring is probably way more for money than the joy of performing music for fans. Just a guess, management, record company, and all other business interests probably told them something about you're getting older now... *MAKE THE MONEY WHILE YOU STILL CAN.* Slash allegeded has to pay his ex wife Perla $100,000.00... NOT a year, A MONTH in ALIMONY. He's well motivated to do this regardless of Axl's voice. Everyone else in the band has family/businesses they deal with outside of music too.

Yes, he sounds like a cross between Mickey Mouse and Herbert from Family Guy. But for a 60-year-old natural baritone to still be able to climb up to that higher register and live there for an entire song is incredibly impressive. Robert Plant lost the ability to do that back in the 70s, and he's a low tenor! Axl's natural voice is heard on "It's So Easy" and "Bad Obsession." He may have lost his rasp but he's still got incredible range.

This isn’t confirmed but I’ve read on numerous sites that Axl has had to have multiple vocal surgeries over the years from singing improperly for the first 5 years. If you listen to him from the early years, his voice would start to go towards the end of the sets and he would scream and rip his voice apart trying to hit the notes with power. Because of that he had to learn to sing properly without fucking up his voice and what you hear is that. It’s not that he can’t sing the way he used to, he can. He did it with AC/DC. If you watch the live shows, sometimes for a moment he’ll sing the way he used to and then quickly go back to what you hear now. It’s that if he sings like that for too long it rips his chords apart and he’s risking permanently damaging his voice. Again, this isn’t confirmed but it would definitely explain how he went from sounding like a chainsaw in key to Mickey Mouse. So, I don’t know. He’ll always be a God and I’m just glad he’s still doing it. Thanks for posting this man.

You can find live shows in the early 2000's where he purposely did the mickey mouse voice. "Purposely" - Because during the same years you can find shows where he sounded normal. So, he was doing it on purpose. Problem is people conflate that time period with the last 10 years.
In the mid 2000's there are plenty of shows you can find where he sounded amazing - Normal. It was around 2011/2012 when something happened. He just couldn't sing anymore. Not in the same raspy normal way he always had. You can hear him struggling, trying to sing normally. But he can't. This continued on the current tour that's been in progress since 2016. It really sounds like he's hurting himself at times. There hasn't been a single performance since then (2011/2012) where he's sounded normal.
I've probably listened to every single live show that's on UA-cam. All of this "It's his age! It's his weight! He's doing it on purpose to save his voice!"....is all nonsense. Something clearly happened around 2011/2012. Physically, to his vocal chords or nasal passages. Something broke.
Scott Weiland's voice changed a lot in the late 90's and you can find a clip of the surviving band-mates saying Scott lost a lot of baritone from cocaine destroying his nasal passages. You can hear this easily. Listen to Scott live in 92-94. Then listen to him sing the same song in the late 90's or early 00's. His voice was much higher. Maybe that's what happened to Axl?
Axl's speaking voice changed around 2012 as well. It's not as deep as it was. Has a nasally sound to it. At this point it's like the Emperor wears no clothes. People swear he still sounds great or that it's not that bad. It's horrendous. I feel bad for the guy. It's like his superpower has been robbed from him. It'd be like watching Jordan try to dunk...but he can't do it anymore. For a time in 2016 he was able to do really high screams and some of the AC/DC stuff. But that's it. Aside from that he sounds like a person doing an impression of himself (a bad impression at that). I am a massive GNR fan and fan of Axl. They're my favorite band and he's my favorite singer. I would still pay to see them now even with Axl's voice being so bad. So, I'm not just hating.

I agree. Something happened in 2011. 2010 he still sounded good and could pull off the rasp, then when that leg of the tour ended and the new one started in 2011, it all changed. Something happened in that time period, idk if he got a surgery or what but the final show in 2010 he still sounded good, didn’t struggle, hit all the notes perfectly. I don’t get it. Same thing with when he returned in 2001 after being mia since 94. When he returned in 01 he had the smooth sound. I would since after a 7 year hiatus with not doing much singing would give his voice a much needed break but I guess not. I really think at some point he got surgery and that’s what led his voice to change.

Anyway, I’d also suggest perhaps they transpose… or better yet, release an unplugged ‘Layla’ style live re recording: one that perhaps starts lower, and soulful, then close out by allowing the guitar to really rip at the the end…you know…give ‘em best of both worlds? -Worked for Clapton. Aside from the parts where Axl's voice hasn't been in top notch form since 2016, I'd say he fluctuates a lot. Twas sick back in September, so he was going to sound more off than when he's not sick. I'd been following concert vids closely since summer & as I've never seen GN'R live, I was even more curious for how I'd percieve Axl's voice to be given the tendencies of him sounding like Mickey. That being said, for my first time ever going to the San Diego show back on Oct. 1st, I felt he sounded really good overall! His recovery from when he was sick was quite remarkable. 3.5 hours & 33 songs. I daresay that's the longest setlist we've had this year in the states if I'm not mistaken. I knew to expect him not sounding great when he uses the falsetto for a number of the classic raspy sounding songs. But still, lower register is very good. And I'd say that night was worth absolutely every penny. It was really, really good overall. But yeah, that being said, I do love Axl a lot & I do want him to still sing for many years to come, so I just hope he keeps making adjustments accordingly.

You have to train your voice. Your voice is a muscle. If you don't train it and do scales it will get weaker. Also everyone has a natural break or crack in their voice between true voice and falsetto. If you're speaking voice is raspy then your singing voice will be raspy. And finally, If you're speaking voice is clean and your singing voice is raspy you're most probably putting this sound on.

Axl is when at his best back in the 80s and 90s is a 5 octave singer. He is very hard working and demanding singer upon himself and even when you are one of the best if you are not careful you can shred your voice. He needs perhaps vocal rest and to take a vacation if he is ill like a cold or something. Allegedly he is working with a vocal coach to help him out. He is 67 and he has pushed his voice hard for decades. At this point he is mostly bass-barritone. I feel for him. Maybe they all need a break from the touring.

Saw em live in 06 he sounded like 90s
But it does seem with no disrespect. He’s got to really want to. Like the AC/DC stuff where he sounded like 91-92 anyway. Then his own band it’s played a lil safer

Too many people judge Axl's vocals from on-line videos, which is unfair, because in general (when Axl feels well) he still sounds incredible, Live. Axl is older & yes, we all change as we get older, but Axl's vocals are still VERY impressive, during Live concerts. It is also unfaor to compare Axl to his younger days (80's & 90's). I wish more people would understand this :)

Hi I attended the reunion tour. I thought he was in great voice. I had no knowledge of previous singing voice issues.
Personally, I feel he is working too hard. Not resting his voice adequately enough, especially after the ACDC tour. He did an outstanding job.
He is still young enough to rest his singing voice for at least 18 months to build his natural range back up to sing in his own natural forwardness.
Also, after listening to some interviews it appears to me that the lack of competent sound stage testing and during GNR's performance Axl is forced to sing over sound issues that should have been corrected in sound check. Which leads to Axl singing not as he normally would and being forced to sing against his true style creates further vocal issues.
The GNR reunion concert was the first outdoor concert I had ever attended.
Maybe as an experiment a suggestion would be to hold a series of their shows at indoor venues.
I know they have been there and done that. Just a suggestion.
Still know he is simply the best. Much love to him XX❤❤❤❤

Sadly this how his voice has been since he finished the tour with AC/DC back in 2016 and even before that he was sounding like this since the end of 2010. When Axl reformed GNR in 2000-2002 he came back with a cleaner vocal style, a lot of people back then thought maybe he blew his voice out but he said it was just he wanted to try things differently. By 2002 his vocals were different sounding but they had control and power. That tour ended up going ass up and Axl wasn't seen again until 2006, 2006 he was in good shape and his voice was kind of in this weird place between 1992/2002 Axl.
Some performances he did more clean vocal sound of 2000-2002 but some performances he sounded a lot closer to the 1991-1992 Axl, check out Sweet Child from Rock AM Ring vs LA a few months later. His vocals in 2009 were pretty bad again when they did shows in Japan and South Korea. In 2010 his vocals were consistently good, he had some down nights but for the most part it was the most consistently good his voice had been in a long time. The wheels fell off in 2011 and 2012 had the School Bridge Benefit concert which was way worse than even this performance.
Then out of nowhere Axl joined AC/DC in 2016, and Axl sounded better than even he did from 1991-1992(1993 was when his voice was its absolute best live), he sounded like Axl again. I don't know if it was the last gasp of his vocal cords, I don't know if it was he didn't want to disappoint a band he looked up to as a teen, I don't know if it was the last time he gave a shit, but whatever the reason Axl was the best he has ever been. Then the wheels fell off again and he has been horrible for almost a decade now.
