Col (R) Maqbool Afridi | My unit, 15 Frontier Force Regiment “Fighting Fifteen” was deputed for UNOSOM II, Mogadishu, Somalia from Aug 1993 to Oct, 1994. The unit underwent a remarkable experience of hostile actions & humanitarian work. The unit took part to rescue US Rangers from the clutches of hostile Somali militia in the famous operation termed by the Americans “Battle of Mogadishu”. On 3rd Oct, 1993, US Rangers Rescue Operation was carried out along with US Rangers / Delta Force / QRF, comprising of 160 soldiers, 19 aircrafts (including 8 Black Hawk Helicopters & 8 Little Birds). The Pakistani force comprised of 15 FF & 19 L, having APC borne Platoon & troop of tank respectively. The Malaysian force comprised of few empty APCs for accommodating the stranded soldiers. At about 1500 hrs, US Rangers raided Olympic Hotel, in the middle of city, to apprehend Gen Farrah Aidid & his aides. As per plan the US Rangers were dropped from the helicopters & they apprehend few Somalis. Once the Rangers were being retrieved, 2 helicopters were shot by the Somalis with rocket launchers. The helicopters fell down and the crew took up defensive position in the nearby buildings. Mean while, many ground attempts were made by US troops to reach the hotel and extricate the stranded soldiers. But Somalis had by then erected many road blocks on the roads leading to the hotel. The Somali militia effective fires on helicopters as well as on ground forces nullify all efforts of the US troops to extricate their stranded soldiers. At about 1700 hrs, Pakistan contingent was asked to help to rescue the stranded Rangers. The Pakistani force was given the task to lead the Rangers Force / Delta Force from sea port till the Olympic Hotel, give fire support at the site and once the stranded Rangers are rescued then cover the withdrawal of the Force. The operation started at about 2300 hrs from the sea port. Pakistani force was in the lead followed by US troops in their humvees and the Malaysian APCs at the end. Throughout the move Pakistani force came under heavy fire from the close by buildings / streets but due to effective counter fire they made the headway. At last the force reached the site at about 0030 hrs. As per plan the US Rangers / QRF started contacting the stranded troops and some troops were extricated. The whole night Pakistani force provided fire support to US troops and was also fighting the Somali militia who was firing on them from multiple directions. Due to stiff resistance & effective fire by the militia, there was lack of coordination / coherence amongst the various US fighting groups. The US Rangers were not able to contact the group which was in the south of the Olympic Hotel and they were worried as day light was approaching. The last group was contacted at 0500 hrs but due to panic and fatigue the US soldiers started firing on each other and few got injured. Many US soldiers were accommodated in own APCs. One of the badly wounded US soldier left behind was dragged and accommodated by Lt Baber in his own APC (Lt Baber being light weight couldn’t pick him being heavy weight). After retrieving the stranded soldiers the force started moving back at about 0530 hrs. The Pakistani troops were at the tail end to protect the force from Somali militia who was chasing them with intense fire from every direction. The complete force reached Soccer Stadium at about 0700 hrs on 4th Oct, 1993. They were provided with first aid, tea & water etc by Pakistan contingent. From there, the US troops were lifted by helicopters to their camp. Approximately 20 US Rangers killed, 75 wounded & 1 captured alive, 1 Malaysian killed & 7 wounded, 1 soldier of my unit got a shrapnel wounded on his cheek but refused to go to hospital. Approx 1500 - 3000 Somali killed / wounded. On 4th Oct, in the morning, the Subedar Major came to give the routine OK report, told me jubilantly that, “Americans are saluting our flag” (while passing through our camp). Once the platoon came back, I asked them in light mood that how was the night. They smiled, with glowing faces & shine in their eyes, in loud voices replied “Sir, we have rescued the American Rangers from Somali militia”. The Hollywood has made Oscar winning award movie “Black Hawk Down”. The US Rangers action has been amply covered with exaggeration. I wish the action of Pakistani force should have been given due coverage. I shall not write much about US Rangers / Delta Force battle worthiness - for poor planning, execution & fighting abilities of the soldiers in battle field because, “A soldier should not disgrace a soldier”. But do give them credit for requesting Pakistan Army contingent to rescue them else they all would have been butchered by the hostile militia at night.
It was not the soldiers' inability to fight. It was the Somalians' lack of righteousness as a culture; some cultures are not worth saving. That is the strategic issue. Operationally, the disapproval of armor by President Clinton led to this. Then, his feckless leadership afterwards led to the pulling out of the mission-- not understanding the US had a real chance of reshaping the culture after Aideed's militia was mortally wounded.

Jose Rios defeat ? The rangers succeeded in their mission. Just took a different and violent route. 19 Americans died vs 1000 Somali militia forces. Although them cheering for them having to retreat back to base is indeed sad, especially when the Americans were really trying to help. The u.s forces were afraid they were ready to go back out and run the militia out. But thousands of militia fighters were pouring into the city, the rangers and delta's were still ready to fight more of them.

It's called the Mogidishu Mile because the distance was......a mile 🤯, not 3. The convoy didn't leave them, they sped walked the mile to a staging point where the convoy was waiting.
I still don't know whether those Somalian citizens at the end of this clip were cheering to them, or more like bullying, waving them off, knowing they can't be harmed as unarmed folk.
Are there any videos or interviews done on the Somali militia men who were engaging the Rangers during the Mogadishu mile and if they intentionally allowed them to escape? Any links to articles or videos would be well appreciated.
The book has interviews with both civilians and some of the fighters to an extent, its one of the poorer aspects of the film that they didn't adapt the perspective of the Somali people living in Mogadishu.
There's an interview with some of the somalis that participated in the battle, and they said that they wanted to let the Americans to survive so that the city could see them running with their tails between their legs Either that was the case or they just used it as an excuse for their atrocious aim

My fault for not being a military man, but I've never understood why the guys in the APC's appear to have "abandoned" the guys running on foot to their fate. Is hitching a ride forbidden in the armed forces? No room in the vehicles? Lie on the floor, lie on top of the vehicles, can't be any worse than running on the streets.
The fact that they rolled up not only one but TWO technicals with .50cal and didn't hit ONE marine is really a joke. I don't have any weaponstraining, but give me a .50Cal mounted on a pickup, and i'm pretty sure i can cut atleast 1 marine in half that's running away from me.
It really happened. How i try explain it is that its not a human nature to attack a fleeing enemy its been well documented after WW2 btw. Modern millitaries like US found a way to overcome this with new kind of training while somalians were training in old way. This also explains way only 19 US soldiers got killed while somalian casualties were over 1000.
I gotta ask, once they clear the fog and there's the kids and people there cheering and the like, I never understood-were the people cheering as in, "Oh, the Americans had to run away" or cheering because they tried to take out some of the bad guys?

Oh I get it, unprovoked war is justified when a liberal is in the White House.
You know it was to provide aid right?
Right, and the Iraq war was to liberate the people.
This war was actually trying to help. Iraq was not one of those cases.
In other words you believe the bullshit when it comes from a democrat administration. Classic libtard double standards.
The guys driving the APC's should have driven slower and provided these guys with cover.
I love my country somalia. 2020
I now no one is like them. And the americans dont be any angels. I am from uruguay one contry of latin american. 👍
@@gustavofernandez7194 l am not like them. U now the all the countries is not bad but some people are not good u have to know that. Allah can gave us a peace and everything. Thanks how you are answer me.

You missed! How could you miss, they were 20 feet in front of you?!
0:57 😁 fail camera man in car and soldier with machine gunner (legs).
There should be end for one who rebels against their own people
What song
So the trucks just drove off instead of giving cover for the guys running behind
Movie was exaggerated. They ran a mile yes but they were picked up by the convey that stayed behind to pick them up.
It sucks that this is what Africa is truly like
its worse than this
Africas a whole continent not just a city.
And its all a shithole.
Africa is not a city it's a Continent, and no Africa isn't like this. It's like thinking America is all like New York when it's not.
BK CheZ not all I think, south africa is at least better (and don't get me start on wakanda)
Bullet never solution
I’m just confused why they were all cheering after they killed so many of their people are
1:35 shouldn't he be using an M9?
Fliyo MB He’s Delta, he gets to choose what he wants
thats a 1911 dumb '-' Colt 1911 not Beretta M9
Delta Operators are allowed to use whatever sidearm they choose
The fact that they rolled up not only one but TWO technicals with .50cal and didn't hit ONE marine is really a joke.
I don't have any weaponstraining, but give me a .50Cal mounted on a pickup, and i'm pretty sure i can cut atleast 1 marine in half
that's running away from me.
I have an incredible theory... perhaps they couldn’t hit any “marines” because this op was carried out by the 75th Ranger Regiment/Delta Force.🤯
I gotta ask, once they clear the fog and there's the kids and people there cheering and the like, I never understood-were the people cheering as in, "Oh, the Americans had to run away" or cheering because they tried to take out some of the bad guys?
Those are local Somalis cheering. They’re the victims of the armed militias you see fighting the US throughout the movie
@@smv-tv Ok, fair enough.
Man fuck running a mile with full gear and a SAW
Cause this is Delta and Ranger
