Greetings from Philly, Matti. What a great video and suggestion! I picked up one of these lenses + adapter for under $50, and it's quite literally one of the best purchases I've made for my camera. Love the smoothness of the focus, focal range, and general "analogue" vibe to the lens. I would never have even thought of it, so cheers, and thanks again!
I have several versions of this lens also in Leica thread mount, it’s hard to take a bad picture with any version. There must be a reason why zillions of copies were sold. You made some great pictures as always.
Love this, I have 2 Canon 50mm’s (f1.2&f1.4) one that came with my Film camera A-1, and the other a garage sale find. The f1.8 looks lovely, it has very nice bokeh. Thanks for sharing this with us, I love the “classic “ look these lenses make, it’s easy to adapt to them any mirror less camera. And I agree these make much better sense than modern manual focus lenses 🙀
Thanks for making this video. That lens was the kit lens that came with the Canon EF that my grandfather bought for me in 1976. I am planning to switch to Nikon Z mirrorless soon and will definitely get an adapter to try this piece of Canon glass on it.
Had a Canon 50mm f1.4ssc, but the aperture was sticky and oily. I couldn't use it with the automatic modes on my Canon T70. I think, the 50mm F1.8 s.c. will do a similar job optically, and mechanically i love these older FD lenses. After studying some reviews including your excellent video i purchased a FD 50mm f1.8 s.c.
I have many canon lenses, I have the next later version to yours 50mm 1.8 FD-SC has the green circle AND a silver button below it where you can lock, also back lens has a red "L" and a locking lever. I use these on my Sony A6000 camera.
Fantastic review, it was a revelation. To me this video demonstrates that its not so much the lens but the photographer, also that quality lens can be had for reasonable pries. I would like to see a video comparing the cost and quality of vintage lenses vs more modern lenses. This
@@mattisulanto another manual lens or vintage lenses are from leica m mount, maybe you can review the minolta 50mm f2 or some voigtlanders like 40mm 1.4 and 40mm 1.2 .
Canon has done incredible work in imaging. As you have just seen on that legendary 50 1.8. On the other hand, I was so impressed by the IBIS and video features of lower-cost Lumix cameras that I never became a Canon videographer. 10 bit 4k30 and 4k60 8 bit full sensor on the G9 is worth being pulled away from Canon's great products. But I don't doubt they will continue pulling new tricks out of their hats, barring the cripple hammer. 🤣
There are a few reasons for buying newer manual lenses: No head start for fungus inside the lens, less potential for issues with oil on the aperture blades. Might have to take the one I inherited from my father apart and try to clean the oil off the aperture.
Did you have an Adapter to advice me for my Sony? I've seen that the FD lens need a special adapter with an added line to keep the infinite distance focus, but i can't find it.
I have one of the later versions. It's in mint condition. But I use it on MFT (either with or without speed booster) so not "standard" lens on that, as it gives me angle of view you would get with a lens of focal length 100mm (or 72mm using the booster) on FF camera. It's a nice option. Think I paid about £50 for mine. 👍
I have a Canon T70 with this that I got when my Father In Law was cleaning out his closet. I understand it's a "Good 50 year old lens, but don't expect to get images that will blow you away."
Hello Matti. I have a Lumix GX9 on which I want to mount an AF-S Nikkor DX 55-300mm lens. Which adapter I need to buy. Happy holidays despite Covid-19. Christine
I'm not really sure, because that lens does not have aperture ring. I think it's better to google and see what comes up. I think you'll need an adapter, that has electronic connections to operate the aperture on the lens. I'm really sorry I can't help you any better on this. Happy holidays to you too.
Nice review. But to be honest the 50/1.4 is the one to review. The difference in price is negligible on the used market between the two, and the 1.4 is just a brilliant lens. Clearly better than the 1.8, and debatably better than even the 1.2 L series. I have it with a cheap Pixco speed booster on a g85 and you end up with a functional f-stop of 1.0, and really stunning images.
Good evening sir, I have a CANON LENS FD 50mm 1: 1.8 S.C. - which adapter should i buy to mount it on my FUJIFILM X-T4. many thanks and forgive my bad English.
You are going to need an FD to Fuji X adapter. The body side of the adapter has to have the Fuji X mount and the lens side has to have the Canon FD mount.
There’s a lot of misinformation about SC versus SSC; both are multi coatings, it was really just a marketing thing in the 70’s as it was a cheap way to up-sale people and there was a big “coating” war between lens makers. Nothing a good lens hood can’t fix.
@@marioikada6747 You have to choose adapter that L mount on the camera side and FD mount on the lens side. There are many available, if you google "l mount to fd adapter".

I have the Canon FDn 50mm 1.4 which was among the best performing 50mm lenses when it was new, it is great for digital APSC sensor cameras.
I still like to shoot with this lens from my Canon days. I find it goes nicely with my GX9. Happy Christmas to you and your family.

Going Vintage Canon very nice!
By the way your studio looks very sharp!
Thanks. It's a very modest studio😀
@@mattisulanto but well put together and modest is still better than explicit and trashy. 👍
I think the lock is inside near the aperture lever with the red mark L for fully manual use (aperture lock)

Very many low cost 50mm lenses out there, made during this era. Yashica and Minolta could be brothers to the Canon FD.
