In some ways yes the Xbox was suppose to be the next Dreamcast, but with SEGA having branched out into making games for other consoles, and portables soon after no it was not because SEGA did not remain exclusive to the Xbox. One thing that always puzzled me was why Microsoft never bought SEGA, and made them exclusive which would have given them an excellent 2nd party dev instead of buying RARE, and doing jack shit with it. but in hindsight I'm glad SEGA stayed 3rd party.
Actually I think Microsoft did want to buy Sega, but Sega refused. Also Microsoft did use Rare when they bought them, but pretty much any title Rare cooked up was generally lambasted.
Thomas Ruth if that's true, then it would have been down to SEGA of Japan, and their stubbornness. Far as RARE goes under Microsoft, the only thing they have remotely done well was RARE Replay, and it still did not make me want to go out, and buy a Microsoft console to play it, like RARE did in their glory days of the N64. In fact RARE games where one of the big reasons I got into collecting for the N64. So in my book that still counts as Microsoft not really doing jack shit with RARE.
NaughtyGawd That had some part to play in it for sure, but Japanese consumers are very nationalistic overall, and prefer to support home grown companies such as Nintendo, and SONY over Microsoft when it comes to their console preferences. No outside console has done well in Japan, Atari failed, along with the Apple Pippin, and it even had the backing of Bandai. The main reason Apple has done so well in Japan far as their computers, and other hardware is because overall since the 80's they have had better support for typing, and displaying the Japanese language.
It's not xbox's fault that RARE can't develop a game to save their own damned lives after the year 2001. As a company, they suck cock, and you must now accept that, or keep lying to yourself.
I think that the Original Xbox "Duke" controller looks like a combination between a Microsoft Sidewinder Extreme Controller and a Dreamcast Controller.
Man I'm so glad I've stumbled upon this channel a few months ago! I love watching MVG videos. So much knowledge, so well put together and scratches an itch that I never knew I had! Great job dude 👍 keep up the fabulous work 👏🤘👊
I've always thought of the Original Xbox as the Sega Dreamcast's spiritual successor, mostly due to the similarity in the controller. I've never got on with Playstation controllers so I held on to my Dreamcast right up until the Xbox was released, which I traded it in for.
I owned the Dreamcast at launch and when it was dying there was talk back then that Microsoft had a strong working relationship with Sega and that their upcoming Xbox console would carry the torch for Sega...at least early on. Nevertheless, I went from Dreamcast to Xbox for that very reason alone. Games like Gunvalkyrie were actually originally developed for Dreamcast late in it's life and when the system ended development moved to Xbox.
It's interesting that on-screen it states "Powered by Windows CE", but on the front of the console it states "Compatible with Windows CE". Ever since I first got my Dreamcast years ago, I always wondered what "Compatible with Windows CE" meant. Thank you for explaining it.
Only in sales. It was better than the PS2 in every way. The PS2 only led the sales race because it had a head start and was a DVD player. The Xbox was a year late and needed a remote to play DVDs. How good the Xbox was is why the Xbox 360 got such a strong start out of the gate. Microsoft exclusives were top notch during that decade as well. Sony had good titles, but none as impactful and iconic as Halo during that period. That's not to mention the extra power, hard drive and Xbox live.
@@cokelife5831 brand recognition is another factor. It was Microsoft's first console vs Sony's second console. Not to mention that the Dreamcast came out a year prior to ps2 but a lot of people didn't get it and just waited for the ps2. The GameCube aswell came out the same year as the Xbox so yeah PS2 had the advantange thanks to Dreamcast not having a DVD drive.
3:01 now that brings back some memories. After my comadore 64 died , the monitor stayed around as my bedroom TV until high school. TBH it's one of the best crt tvs you can use for retro gaming. They were well built too and mine is in storage still working.
not to forget, only because of WinCE it was possible to hack the dreamcast security system and so we could build the preloader CD-R to play copied games :-) Thanks Bill
You triggered me to turn on my Outrun 2 Twin Arcade now !!! Chihiro always makes me happy. For me personally the OG Xbox is kinda the Dreamcast 2. And from a collectors perspective i have stocked up on games the last two years. So many great jewels on that console.
@@xXTopGXx Yeah I bet Nintendo was all like, hey our current home system is failing, mostly because of its dumb gimmick, what should we do? Oh yeah I know, we should copy the dumb gimmick of a failed system from 2 decades ago. Right.
When you said the Japanese release date of the Dreamcast was in November of 1998 I had to double check that, because I'll never forget 9/9/99 as the day the system came out in North America (same day as Final Fantasy 8 IIRC). Anyway, I had no idea that the Dreamcast was out in Japan for 10 months before it came here. That's insane.
For some reason, I smiled when you said that they asked that Dreamcast games be compatible with the Xbox. Truly, this feels like Twilight Princess, the Hero of Time and the Hero of Twilight.
I bought a Dreamcast on day 1. At the time. That system had the biggest "WOW" effect on me. Dreamcast introduced a tennis game that was actually amazing to play. And I hate tennis. The 2k sports started on the Dreamcast. Shenmue was outstanding at the time. Tomb Raider the Last revelation and Resident Evil Code Veronica were must have for the system. Pound for pound. The Dreamcast was the best console ever made
Had Sega gone first party with Microsoft they would have never been pressured into making cash grab sonic games to keep afloat .They would have taken new risk reviving old franchises with the budget of a software giant.
This is an interesting point I've been pondering recently. I'm predominantly a PC/PS/Nintendo gamer and so for that reason I'm glad they didn't buy Sega, but one would have to assume that Microsoft had discussions about it being a possibility early on. Consoles are driven by exclusive software, and if Microsoft could have said, 'We have all of Sega's games, we have Halo' etc, it would have been a much stronger value proposition from them. To this day, XBOX's biggest problem is worthwhile exclusive content beyond Halo and Gears.
I was wondering why so many Sega sequels were on the Xbox solely. I didn't know Microsoft partnered with sega in the dreamcast. Thanks for the info, this was informative for me as a librarian of gaming.
As a sega fan, I do agree, well I certainly treated it as such. From Master System through to Dreamcast I only ever had Sega consoles growing up, and I flocked to the xbox for the sega library and familiar controller and 4 ports. there was no doubt to me it was the nearest thing to dreamcast 2 we were getting.
Amazing video! I always considered the XBOX to be the continuation of the SEGA home consoles... Now it's nice to be somewhat confident that I was correct. I love SEGA and own every home console they produced for NA. I also own all of Microsofts XBOX consoles (I actually have a "Day One" edition X1 and I also have the "Scorpio Edition" X1X). Great video...
The Sega Dreamcast stands as one of my most favorite systems of all time. This was one of the most interesting videos I have seen about the Xbox and offered so many different angles, hardware and background knowledge of Microsoft and SEGA.
I meant to mention this the other day but just remembered, although Sega dropped the home console market it didnt stop them building machines, they had Naomi which was kind of the Dreamcast 2 - I happened to be in the US when Sega released the news they were getting out of consoles so I was able to snap up a bunch of peripherals at discount prices - I also remember seeing the last of the remaining Sega Australia Dreamcast stock sitting on a pallet in port Melbourne waiting to be gutted for arcade machines - I wanted to cry lol
It's funny, before I purchased (and ultimately enjoyed) my original Xbox in 2003, I always teased it as the "Dreamcast 2" haha. I switched to Xbox with the 360, and love my Xbox One. I'm glad they've added original Xbox titles to backward compatibility, although seeing all your videos makes me want to get an original again and mod it. Great channel, new sub here.
great video! It's a real shame the Dreamcast's life was so short.... The original Xbox was very much a true love letter to the DC not sure why any hardcore fans of either Sega or XBox would take issues with the xbox being the unofficial DC 2.0 the two companies needed each other during this time
mmm Sega games for XBOX original is fantastic: Jet Set Radio Future,Panzer Dragon Orta,Sega GT 2002 (my opinion is much better of Gran Turismo 4).XBOX original best hardware for console generation,Ninja Gaiden Black is best action game for engine and gameplay is level up for generations games,XBOX has brought the features then implemented in the generations after (XBOX 360 and PS3) as the online service and the use of high resolution in games.A nice feature was the conversion of the audio formats converted by cd by saving them on hard disk, the interesting thing was that many games could use the music saved by integrating them in games !, you could listen to your music on the radio or CD in GTA San Andreas for example.
@@aawwmm I have played a lot of Sega Gt on XBOX for a long time, two are the main problems discussed on Gran Turismo and other titles, the AI and the physical damage to the cars, the latter also a copyright problem of car manufacturers that do not want damage image, Sega has solved with an energy bar system that indicates the damage of the car, Sega has also introduced systems of use of the wheels, brakes and all this affects the economy introduced in the game, this title offers you a very simulation experience rewarding, you have to be good at finishing first while remaining cautious about maintenance costs and it is something that not even the most modern games take into consideration.
Mizt3r E don’t think that was the point he was trying to make, Microsoft knows exactly how to do it right because they have succeeded in their relatively short gaming lifespan
Also Midtown Madness 3, an Xbox exclusive, appears to share some striking GUI similarities with Crazy Taxi. After learning more about the intricate relationship between Sega and Microsoft during that time, I'm even more surprised that the NGC was prioritized by Sonic Team for most of their games during the sixth console generation, starting with the Adventure 2: Battle port.
Dreamcast was such an absolutely amazing system. I remember feeling like Sony was conquering simply by throwing a ton of money at exclusive titles, just TONS of them and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve owned every Xbox system released... and never owned a Sony console. So I guess subconsciously I never forgave them haha.
Travis Truitt I suspect mine is still at my parents house. Maybe I should dust it off and hook it up. I’d love to give the Echo the Dolphin game another shot after running through my old favorites
wow this was a really good video essay. the evidence does suggest the xbox is the successor to the DC even if it isn't official. the part about the chihiro hardware being almost identical to the xbox was what really convinced me.
I always thought everyone knew the Xbox was the the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast. Once I saw Jet Set Radio Future, Shenmue 2, & knowing Project Gotham was he successor to Metropolis Street Racer, I already assumed it.
From the looks of it, it really does look like Sega intended for the Xbox to be the successor to the Dreamcast, especially after hearing about the almost identical hardware their Chihiro arcade system had, but I think two things made them change their mind about working more closely with Microsoft: -The Xbox failed to keep pace with the PS2 in sales (24 million sounds like a lot, but the PS2 sold over FIVE TIMES that) -Seeing the value of developing games for other consoles vs. exclusivity I was actually shocked to find out the original Xbox only sold 24 million. I could have sworn it was a higher number.
My understanding of the ST-V and Naomi boards is that they are actually based off the console hardware, which would make sense given that they're very similarly specced with the exception of more RAM, and maybe a change in storage format (a common theme among console-based hardware, other companies have done this as well). In fact, original Naomi boards used GD-ROMs which were developed for the Dreamcast. So I think it's probably accurate that the home hardware was developed first. There's just no way you're going to design these kind of hardware for arcade first, and then just magically make it work for home consoles by decreasing the RAM and calling it a day. Likewise, with Chihiro Sega was already working on Xbox titles, so it made sense to take the same basic design and add a little RAM to it. This is the brilliance of console-based hardware (or in this case perhaps, PC-based hardware, a route which Sega continued) being used in arcades; with a bit of tweaking, they can scale the game down to work on the nearly-identical console hardware with little effort. It made total sense for Sega to move on to Microsoft's console once they determined they were exiting the console hardware business. Why would they work with Nintendo, a long-time rival who continued to make their own esoteric hardware? Meanwhile, Sony, the company that nearly single-handedly killed them, had their own difficult hardware to develop for. Microsoft's PC-based hardware was a perfect fit. The original Xbox was languishing in the Japanese market, so it made perfect sense for Microsoft to cater to Japanese developers, and who better than the Sega brand that held strong even when the Saturn was flailing in the US market? I don't doubt that Sega saw the Xbox as their spiritual successor to the Dreamcast, but what I do doubt is the notion that they had anything to do with its development. The original Xbox started development long before Sega exited the hardware market and was finalized well before Sega had a chance to influence it. Sega saw the potential of the hardware, having ported titles to the PC in the past, and realized it was their chance to develop for someone that wasn't one of their main competitors for the last decade and/or had hardware that wasn't a pain to program for (and it helps that Microsoft was really trying to cater to developers at that time). Sega had nothing to do with the development of the Xbox and they were simply a third-party publisher who preferred to work with Microsoft rather than its rivals. That's it.
0:27 after watching cowboy bebop i cant stop noticing steve blums (spike) voice EVERYWHERE.. insane.. he's in like half the games I grew up with, jesus.
I always wanted Microsoft and Sega to continue the exclusive agreement, but too bad they didnt. As for Xb having Dreamcast compatibility, It should have happened. That would have been awesome.
Yes, I think it's pretty clear that the X-Box is pretty much the successor to the Dreamcast. The evidence strongly suggests that Sega wanted Microsoft to continue their legacy.
More like they wanted to go into business together and then something happened that ruined it; like Nintendo/SOny and all the other failed partnerships.
Arcade only or not, Sega will always be my favorite. I pamper my genesis, saturn, and dreamcast so much i dont think ill ever let them go. Esp since my model 1 genesis is from christmas in 92 lol
Shit, I'm really hoping that Playground games would pick up PGR and do a reboot. Microsoft needs that Stylish racing game. So Forza can go back to being Forza 1 and 4. Horizon can be a Simcade.
Excellent video. Thanks for the technical insight! I was a BIG Sega fan back in my youth mainly because of the arcade divisions which I loved. The reason I became an Xbox fan was that it felt like Microsoft hand been handed the hardware torch from SEGA to continue on. Thats just how it felt to me naturally without all this information. They heavily supported the Xbox and I loved that fact coming from the Dreamcast especially. Keep up the great work!
i still keep my original xbox , which was one of my favourite consoles of all times , and i also owned a dreamcast , and always wondered about the similarity between xbox and dreamcast and always thought there is s trong relationship between them , thanks for answering all my questions ,
Not just designers… there are conspiracies out there claiming M$ sort of pulled a Nokia with Sega. Apparently the guy making the decision to give up Dreamcast went to Microsoft mere months afterwards. And he was only a substitute for the Japanese senior that had gotten ill some time before. Not sure if it's true though.
Not conspiracy, You're talking about Peter Moore, who was CEO of SEGA of America before he left for MS. He was a big driving force behind SEGA exiting the hardware business, which happened shortly before he left to head up the Interactive Entertainment Business division at Microsoft, which is the division that first created the XBOX.
"Apparently the guy making the decision to give up Dreamcast went to Microsoft mere months afterwards." More bullshit. You need to research the history of WebTV and the original Xbox. And also the person who decided to axe the Dreamcast and the Japanese management of Sega right before that time.
I think SEGA was developing the system and financially went belly up after the failure of the dreamcast. So they probably sold their R&D for the new system to Microsoft.
The original Xbox was literally made by a group of Microsoft's R'n'D guys cannibalizing three laptops into a prototype. They basically threw shit at the wall and looked at what stuck, lol.
@@KimPossibleShockwave Yep, the name even came from what the team building the device started casually calling it: "DirectX box", as it was a console being built around Microsoft's DirectX APIs. Marketing tried to come up with other unique names for it, but "Xbox" is the one that stuck.
@@KimPossibleShockwave That sounds like a pretty bonkers way of building a prototype... But... It makes perfect sense that Microsoft would try and build a gaming console out of a PC... It's what they knew... And it would minimise how much work they would have had to do into building an operating system for the thing. Just take windows, strip out everything you can find that seems superfluous for a game console, put a new UI on it... Did you know in older versions of windows you can change the shell by changing a line in windows.ini? You can do stupid stuff like making, say, Notepad the shell, which means that's literally the only program you can run, and if you close it, windows shuts down. Yeah, that was amusing at the time... Also theoretically useful, but I don't know if anyone ever really bothered with it in any serious context... Still, when it comes to prototypes, seeing the Amiga must have been something else. A prototype running at a trade show off 3 giant wire-wrapped circuit boards, each the size of a small table in it's own right. Prototypes for the integrated circuits built out of discrete logic gates and components.... Which would fail so often they had to have someone on hand permanently just to fix the thing every couple of minutes. But, when it worked, it worked flawlessly... Just shows you what prototyping used to look like. XD
I wonder how things would've turned out if Sega stayed XBox-exclusive (i.e not release any games for the Gamecube or PS2 at all), so as to at some level keep the spirit of "the SEGA console" alive.
Yes, as a huge fan of the Dreamcast I seen all the similarities in the Xbox and jumped to an Xbox after I got some extra money and games quit being released on the Dreamcast. I'm not a fangirl btw, I also ended up with a ps2 and a GameCube too.
No, Xbox isn't the Dreamcast 2. Yes there are hardware similarties, but the Software side was just a deal for software. The Arcade machine was part of that and wasn't some big secret. If you look back at the PS2 and GC, they also had a nice selection of exclusives with, I think, the PS2 having a much bigger lineup. Games like Yakuza 1 & 2, Shinobi, Nightshade, Headhunter 2, Gungrave, Virtua Fighter 4, Altered Beast, as well as a bunch of cross platform published games. Ultimately if you were a huge Dreamcast fan (as I was back then) then it became necessary to get a GC, Xbox & PS2. Sure you could fanboy out and hate Sony or Nintendo and even a lot of people hated MS because Peter Moore (the president of Sega of America) helped push the early demise of the DC and stopped us from getting Shenmue 2 on the DC before jumping ship to work for MS... but if you wanted to continue the DC experience then you pretty much needed everything. And talking about VMU stuff, Sega did a good job with the GC and the GBA link to have minigames download from some GC games to play on the GBA.
Wow this was so cool, seeing how similar the beta designs looked too! I always wondered why it was so similar how i never seen that windows ce logo and that sega was teamed with microsoft! I always wished they made a DC2 and today i found out weve had it the whole time.
Warning: Posturing and grandstanding based only on opinion being flagrantly enforced as though it were fact. Rational conversation is impossible. Leave while you can.
I actually when from a Dreamcast to a Xbox, and was on the line of thinking that it was the successor because the controllers where so similar, the duel triggers of the Dreamcast where really forward thinking at the time, and the Xbox having them made games like Forza a lot more enjoyable to play than grand tursmo because you had so much more control over the gas and brakes. Obviously Sony realized this advantage and turned the L2 and R2 buttons into triggers on the duel shock 3. Microsoft also innovated this feature again with the Xbox one by adding individual rumble features to the triggers, which is heavily used in the forza games on Xbox one and gave you feedback as to when the tires are spinning out or locking up under hard braking.
Great video! It was pretty ballsy that an executive at Sega put down his own money to keep the DC going. Too bad that didn't work out as I thought the DC was an amazing console. Now, with the Chihiro being pretty much an Xbox, hmmm! DC2 confirmed! The Panzer Dragoon Orta announcement is what made me an Xbox fan. I got GunValkyrie and the combo disc with Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT with my Xbox and add that controller, and the Xbox was pretty much a Sega machine in my mind!
Why aren't Sega more savvy? it's now 2018, Sega could partner up with Microsoft/Xbox to work on re-releasing the dreamcast!! or be innovative and desing the DreamBox! a Dreamcast/Xbox hybrid console with modern capabilities!! Sega is one of the best innovators of all time, so sad they couldn't stay on top
Innovative? Yes. Sensible? No. You go through their home console history from the SG-1000 all the way back at the start of the 80's to the Dreamcast and you realise that it's one failure after another. Innovative, yes. But always poorly thought out, blundering decision making, and shooting itself in the foot over and over. The Mega Drive/genesis was an outlier that gives the misleading impression of success. SG-1000 - failure Master System - Failure Mega Drive/Genesis - success, but borderline. (it's about a 50/50 split with the SNES) 32x - Failure (also a terrible idea in general) Sega CD - Failure. Game Gear - failure Saturn - Failure Dreamcast - Failure With a track record that looks like that, what did you really expect the outcome to be? They got lucky once, that's about all they had.
@@KuraIthys finally somebody who knows what they're talking about. Reviving the hardware aspects of that company would accomplish nothing but a huge waste of silicone

True. I think the reason the xbox didn't sell well in Japan was the lack of Japanese titles
I can´t stop watching thos OG Xbox Videos. Thank you for sharing. Just reanimted my old xbox with a new 2TB HDD.
I think that the Original Xbox "Duke" controller looks like a combination between a Microsoft Sidewinder Extreme Controller and a Dreamcast Controller.
It looks like something that would actually fit comfortably in my hands.
Its a nice controller, you can buy Hyperkin Dukes for current gen xbox's/pc as well, i have one and its great.
The "duke" was designed by people who had no idea what they were doing.
I never knew sidewinder existed and I own an OG.
@@Sparkfist It was a comfortable controller, just had awkward black and white buttons.
Neat, I always knew Virtua Cop 3 was playable on dev/upgraded Xboxes but I didn't know it was the Chihiro build itself! Always love these videos ❤
sup dude luv your videos,,,
It's interesting that on-screen it states "Powered by Windows CE", but on the front of the console it states "Compatible with Windows CE". Ever since I first got my Dreamcast years ago, I always wondered what "Compatible with Windows CE" meant. Thank you for explaining it.
The OG xbox is still an underrated machine IMO.
@@honkhonkler7732 The Xbox 360's strong start is also down to PS3's terrible launch and very high price point.
Yeah, more underrated than Gamecube.
@@honkhonkler7732 a year head star shouldn’t mean ps2 sold over 100 mil more units than Xbox
Loved my Dreamcast.
not to forget, only because of WinCE it was possible to hack the dreamcast security system and so we could build the preloader CD-R to play copied games :-) Thanks Bill

You triggered me to turn on my Outrun 2 Twin Arcade now !!! Chihiro always makes me happy. For me personally the OG Xbox is kinda the Dreamcast 2. And from a collectors perspective i have stocked up on games the last two years. So many great jewels on that console.
Outrun 2 is seriously a great game. It's the only reason I still keep my old xbox around.
the VMU was the greatest memory card of all time!

As far as I know all the Sega systems came out in Japan ahead of time to the American version of the systems.
It’s insane how much smaller the Dreamcast is
For some reason, I smiled when you said that they asked that Dreamcast games be compatible with the Xbox.
The Dreamcast was the best console ever made
😂
The Sega Dreamcast was a fantastic machine that was way ahead of its time. It truly deserved a much better fate. What a waste, what a pity.
Had Sega gone first party with Microsoft they would have never been pressured into making cash grab sonic games to keep afloat .They would have taken new risk reviving old franchises with the budget of a software giant.
Leo Garivay V. Sega would have closed doors long ago if they would be bought by Microsoft
To this day, XBOX's biggest problem is worthwhile exclusive content beyond Halo and Gears.
it is, thats why i bought it day one and still have it along with my saturn and dreamcast. they all hold up great in terms of gameplay and visuals
Kal El man lucky. I shoulda held on to mine.
Your XBOX? LMAO
oh yeah, was just playing Spikeout Battle Street, Silent Scope Complete and Riddick Butcher Bay. still cool and fun.
Kal El of course the OG Xbox to hold up because in reality is really an Intel Pentium 3 computer
I was wondering why so many Sega sequels were on the Xbox solely. I didn't know Microsoft partnered with sega in the dreamcast. Thanks for the info, this was informative for me as a librarian of gaming.
I had forgotten just how small the Dreamcast was! And how massive the Xbox was... The PS2 actually fit pretty nicely in between.
How come it's your fave?
*xbox360 is the Dreamcast 3* even the color and the buttons!😁
360 is just Xbox impoverished version 2.0 let alone deadcrap.
Xbox=Dreamcast 2
Xbox 360=/=dreamcast 3
Sry but the xbox 360 was something else and as for the controller colors it doesn't make a difference.
It really was
Dreamcast 4=???????
No...
great video! It's a real shame the Dreamcast's life was so short.... The original Xbox was very much a true love letter to the DC not sure why any hardcore fans of either Sega or XBox would take issues with the xbox being the unofficial DC 2.0 the two companies needed each other during this time
as a dreamcast lover, this is a joy to learn
Should have used The Duke, instead of the S-Type, to compare to the Dreamcast controller. Its shape is VERY similar.
Great video, as always!
I love channels like yours where people talk about old video game hardware
mmm Sega games for XBOX original is fantastic: Jet Set Radio Future,Panzer Dragon Orta,Sega GT 2002 (my opinion is much better of Gran Turismo 4).XBOX original best hardware for console generation,Ninja Gaiden Black is best action game for engine and gameplay is level up for generations games,XBOX has brought the features then implemented in the generations after (XBOX 360 and PS3) as the online service and the use of high resolution in games.A nice feature was the conversion of the audio formats converted by cd by saving them on hard disk, the interesting thing was that many games could use the music saved by integrating them in games !, you could listen to your music on the radio or CD in GTA San Andreas for example.
sega gt 2002> gt4 a man of culture.
Greetings from 2023. This was my first video I ever watched by MVG. LOL. I still watch again form time to time.
Xbox = Dreamcast 2
Xbox 360 = Dreamcast 3
Xbox 1 = Dreamcast 4
I agree.. Microsoft dont know shit... About gaming..
Damn imagine what design the dreamcast 2 3 and 4 would have
Mizt3r E don’t think that was the point he was trying to make, Microsoft knows exactly how to do it right because they have succeeded in their relatively short gaming lifespan
L Aaronson Xbox project scarlett = Dreamcast 5
Xbox Series X = Dreamcast 5
I still to this day play my dreamcast
I've inadvertently become a classic console collector, and I've loved all your content. I love Xbox and Sega. Great video.
The original Xbox era was so good man, it was the perfect blend of online play and split screen play. So many good games.

Still my favorite Xbox system. The Sega games have a big hand in that.
From the looks of it, it really does look like Sega intended for the Xbox to be the successor to the Dreamcast, especially after hearing about the almost identical hardware their Chihiro arcade system had, but I think two things made them change their mind about working more closely with Microsoft:
-The Xbox failed to keep pace with the PS2 in sales (24 million sounds like a lot, but the PS2 sold over FIVE TIMES that)
-Seeing the value of developing games for other consoles vs. exclusivity
I was actually shocked to find out the original Xbox only sold 24 million. I could have sworn it was a higher number.
I would say the Xbox is more of a spiritual Successor than a true successor to the Dreamcast.
That's it.
Thank you for the research.
0:27 after watching cowboy bebop i cant stop noticing steve blums (spike) voice EVERYWHERE.. insane.. he's in like half the games I grew up with, jesus.
Small correction, the STV hardware was based on the Saturn hardware, not the other way around.
I went to type that but made sure to check the comments first. I'm glad the comments didn't let me down lol
I always felt like it was at least a spiritual successor. Thanks for all the info.
Interesting look!
I always wanted Microsoft and Sega to continue the exclusive agreement, but too bad they didnt. As for Xb having Dreamcast compatibility, It should have happened. That would have been awesome.

Your videos are amazing! Keep up the great work!😊
Hearing the Max Payne tracks in the background really takes me back
Yes, I think it's pretty clear that the X-Box is pretty much the successor to the Dreamcast. The evidence strongly suggests that Sega wanted Microsoft to continue their legacy.
More like they wanted to go into business together and then something happened that ruined it; like Nintendo/SOny and all the other failed partnerships.
Fascinating watching this video again with the rumours about what next weeks news could be
I love the look of the original xbox! I still play my modded xbox everyday.
I play my Dreamcast sometimes but I've already beat all the good games on it so I am just waiting for some more Homebrew.

Keep up the great work!

ex designers from the dreamcast actually went to microsoft and co created the xbox
kaltblut if that's not evident what with the controller layout...
"ex designers from the dreamcast actually went to microsoft and co created the xbox"
Bullshit. Where's your evidence?
"Apparently the guy making the decision to give up Dreamcast went to Microsoft mere months afterwards."
More bullshit. You need to research the history of WebTV and the original Xbox. And also the person who decided to axe the Dreamcast and the Japanese management of Sega right before that time.
Amazing video. I share this video whenever I can. Great job MVG. Again, amazing video. 👍👍👍
@@jSyndeoMusic Didn't know that, but it makes sense!
Makes you wonder what else had origins like that, too.
We need a new sega system
Some of the of the engineers from the Dreamcast went on to the Xbox as well. Looks like they did pretty well for them self and for the Xbox.
Wow this was so cool, seeing how similar the beta designs looked too! I always wondered why it was so similar how i never seen that windows ce logo and that sega was teamed with microsoft!

No, only one leap and one bound.
Great Content m8 love the Xbox videos!
SG-1000 - failure
Master System - Failure
Mega Drive/Genesis - success, but borderline. (it's about a 50/50 split with the SNES)
32x - Failure (also a terrible idea in general)
Sega CD - Failure.
Game Gear - failure
Saturn - Failure
Dreamcast - Failure
With a track record that looks like that, what did you really expect the outcome to be?
They got lucky once, that's about all they had.
@@KuraIthys finally somebody who knows what they're talking about. Reviving the hardware aspects of that company would accomplish nothing but a huge waste of silicone
