I remember being at The Gathering's presentation of Anneke as the new singer. She had to step into nearly unfillable shoes as she was replacing a male doom voice. The crowd was shocked at how happy and radiant she was, her extremely bright voice and bubbly stage presence. The complete opposite of what was expected of a Doom band. However, there was no denying the quality of her as an artist. A week or so later i went to cafe Stairway to Heaven where she was performing with the guitarist. Just completely blew me away. Then one of here best performance on MTV came. Broken Glass or something. Accompanied by just the piano she showed off her qualities again. If you watch that intimate (that is, Anneke makes it intimate) performance, then you'll fall in love. For some reason that performance had barely a 1000 views for years. I did pear the link in places, hope it's doing better now. Oh, i remember it has Within Temptations lead singer Sharon listening in the background 8-0

I was at that show that afternoon and evening. It was the 25th anniversary of the band, so they were joined by the former musicians of the band: Jelmer (2nd guitarist and one of the backing vocalist at the end of the track), Hugo (bass player, who actually plays in this one and rejoined the band after that), Bart (vocalist in the 1st album and the one you think is Devin), Marike (amazing backing vocalist in the first album) and Anneke (vocalist from 1994-2007). The actual singer is Silje who also appears at the end of the song (Also Marjolein, the bass player at the moment and who left the band a few days later).
The show was amazing, the tickets sold out really quick and they open a new show at the same day's afternoon, which also sold out in a few minutes. I went both Shows.
There were people from all over the world, not just Europe. There were Americans, Mexicans (me and a lot of friends), Argentina, Chile, Japan, Australia and many more places. One of the best shows ever.

A couple of days ago I spoke with my neighbour at another concert (Floor Jansen) about the TG25 show. I'm from Nijmegen, still regret i missed that one. But he was there, said it was the best concert he ever saw, and still remembered the long line of people from all over the world leaving the afternoon show just to get in line for the evening show :)

I’m really surprised that Anneke hasn’t taken off with the reaction channels the way Floor has. Don’t get me wrong, Floor is an amazing vocalist, but nothing will top Anneke for me. I could listen to her read the phone book. Even her speaking voice has a musical quality to it. You could also check out Days go by from her Vuur project, or The Storm from the project The Gentle Storm that she did with Arjen of Ayreon fame.

It is quite simple, most reactors see Anneke in the Valley of the queens, and there she is holding so much back, not to overshadow the others, that the reactors interrest is not peaked, and they delve no further.

It's a shame she's been away from the band for 12 years. Her successor Silje is also doing well but Anneke is my favourite. She makes now solo much softer music . Often without amplification and "the pit" in the music of the Gathering is no longer absent. I discovered the band a few years after Anneke left the band. It's a shame because I could have been at many gigs. Fortunately, on youtube the live performance was in consert hall"Doornroosje" for the 25th anniversary of the band (which I would have loved to have been with for every price. In which Anneke sings with the band again because of the anniversary for 1x. Tip: she sometimes sings with a band called "the genttle storm" and the song is also called "the storm". shortcut is ua-cam.com/video/K5o2KSFzEak/v-deo.html (this is the version I like best.... real rock) Listen if you don't know the band (well) once the CDs also on youtube type the name of the band and the they are. Certainly in percentage terms, 3/4 part is very good (of course in my opinion) and varies from soft to fast beat music. The best band that i now.

This song puts me in a trance. The pedal tone at the end is so hypnotic. Notice how Anneke gracefully sways and moves to the music. Does that remind you of anyone? Travel back in time to tell Mozart how "His music will live forever". Loved it Christy.

She 'moves around' in her resonance so much, and effortlessly - adding nasality, adding pharyngeal resonance, more head voice, more almost-fry voice. And yet, her voice does not 'break' (unintentionally) or crack in the process. Very 'full' throughout. Nice! It is a bit of a workout to listen to, the melody line taking all kinds of twists and turns, but that is part of the tapestry that this is. Certainly keeps the listener's interest. Nice reaction, Christi!

Hugh fan of Floor Jansen but I love Anneke even more. She does a wide range of musical genres and has such a wide range in vocals for each genre that she used in her career. Plus I love that she has done acoustic sets in her career and playing acoustic guitar and piano in these acoustic sets or even live band sets and still hitting all of these notes to perfection. Love Floor but I never heard or seen her perform live in acoustic sets or even live band sets singing and playing an instrument at the same time.

Anneke is the third singer in the band. This is the TRIP ROCK phase of the band.
The Gathering started as a DEATH/DOOM METAL band with male and female vocals. The first singer was called Marike Groot and they recorded their first album.
On the second album the second singer is Martine Van Loon, but without the DEATH METAL elements.
Anneke records the third and fourth album with elements of DOOM, the last one until the switch to this TRIP ROCK.

Wow. So spot on in your comments there! Thanks for highlighting Anneke, TG and this performance.
Anneke indeed wasn't and isn't the default 'metal singer' at any time when she fronted TG, Devin Townsend's band, or Ayreon, The Gentle Storm or VuuR. She brought clean vocals and a unique stage presence to metal from the moment she joined TG and they produced Mandylion.
One thing came to my mind just before this aired:
I would love to see and hear you experience the full 'A Sound Relief' concert in collaboration with one of them 'decomposers' Doug Helvering or Key of Geebz, maybe even with another vocal coach as well, like Charlie 'Big Brain Singer' Calotta or Elisabeth for instance. I am sooo curious to learn how their musical and vocal compositions and arrangements are coming across with people new to them. To my feeling many people who really know them (TG and Anneke) see them as unique, top notch and influential, but there are still so many who just don't know them at all.

This band encompasses some of the best songwriting of their generation, some of the most beautiful and touching melodies, creativity and so many influences from different genres, and it will never stop being my favourite band of all time. They are superb by themselves, and they would have been amazing with any singer, but having Anneke as the front makes it transcendental.

Anneke is so amazing! Great reaction! For more awesome singing from her I would check out Strange Machines, Waking Hour, and On Most Surfaces all by the Gathering. She also does an amazing cover of Audioslave’s Like a Stone in her solo shows

    Hello Madame,
Anneke is my favourite singer since 20 years ...
I suggest you : "Waking Hour" or "Like fountains" - 2 other magical songs !
I really like the song "Bad movie Scene" also because it's only a crescendo !
she's so marvelous, all her discography is pure beauty, her voice is so powerful and beautiful to my ears, only pure emotions, "I love her" :) !!!!
I like also a duet with the band November Doom : "What could have been"
she made an album last year, "Agape" is one of the new ones, so sweet and beautiful song !
    Have a great day !
    greetings from French Riviera !

Maybe the remark 'let the focus be on the band' is the distinction between the American music and European. The focus is on the collective, not on the individual parts.
'Fit in, to stand out' was a slogan for a jeans commercial 3-5 years ago. An American commented that would never work in the US. It did work in Europe.

    Yes! Thank you!
Not that many video's on Anneke with the Gathering and its great to watch her with you and all your comments.
I wonder what the "extra special quality" was you mentioned at 7:39.
As you've fallen in love with her voice i hope you continu to react to her. She still puts out great music to this day. Any extra exposure is great imo.
I'd really like for you to see their breakout hit song "Strange Machines live Pinkpop Fest(1996)
to see a 23 yo Anneke have fun on stage.
Also at some point you have to hear her sing a guitar solo. She does great covers, just her and a guitar.
And the vocal workout you mentioned, this same show with "Waking Hour", or "On Most Surfaces" are good options, with great melodies.
i requested this video to, but thanks to the patreons for this!

The "bald guy" is actually Bart Smits, original singer of TG. For this event TG got together pretty much everyone that was part of the band though their (to that date) 25 years making beautiful music. That includes almost all their singers which in some key moments of the show (like this one) got all together on stage and sang great harmonized sections

Hi Christi! The guy is Bart Smits, the very first vocalist of The Gathering (1989-1993). Actually, Anneke wasn't the first vocalist in this band. She joined in 1994 and left in 2007, so she wasn't a member at the time of the gig. This concert is actually re-union of most of their former and then-current band members. The lady on the right which you can see coming and adjusting her microphone, is Marike Groot, the first female vocalist, featured on the first album along with Bart. The lady on the left is Silje Wergeland, the current vocalist, and the rightmost duet are Marjolein Kooijman and Hugo Prinsen Geerling - bassists and occasionally backing vocalists.
You really have to see ua-cam.com/video/pUKBV8M_XXE/v-deo.html and maybe ua-cam.com/video/pYozpcP-yUE/v-deo.html to see them all :)
    Thanks for your nice video!
