    In hip-hop, things are constantly changing. While one artist is rising, another is always slowly losing ground. At the same time, new sounds gain traction just as others start to feel washed or outdated. This is the natural life cycle of Hip-Hop. The old makes way for the young, who then create new sounds and go from there. It’s how it’s always worked and how it’s always been. But these days, things have taken an unexpected turn.
    Whether he meant to or not, Drake finds himself in a landscape where is unequaled. Where there was previously always someone else lurking behind the throne, Drake isn’t just keeping the seat warm, he’s etched his name into it.
    And just as they say that Tom Cruise is the last Hollywood megastar, Drake is currently the last of his ilk in the game. But now that he’s teetering closer to 40, it’s causing genuine concern among critics and fans.

    As I said before, Drake is not a man, He's a brand. Amorphous, adaptable, pragmatic and determined to thrive, even at others' expense. He's the apotheosis of the constantly changing music industry. He is creative enough to gain begrudging respect but not brave enough to edge to far out of his comfort zone for too long. He'll show "love" to the new artists and hang out with them to size them up, so when he collabs with them using their flow or style, he can always say that he's just matching their energy. He does not have enough faith in his own musical identity and must constantly ape whatever style is popping, water it down and suck it for all it's worth and then move on to the next trend.
    Drake is everything a true artist despises in that regard, and everything a long-lived business seeks to emulate.

      They call his label "the OVO sweatshop" for a reason, Aubrey hijacks the best material for his projects and even when not he ensures he's on any great song (i.e Partynextdoor ft Drake - Recognize, Rihanna ft Drake - Work originally written and produced solely for RiRi).
      Drake is a hit machine and he does everything to ensure he stays coming up with hits, he don't care and chose the generic approach to music because it works for him.
      But he could be doing waaaay more for this artistes, instead he treats them like sh*t under his shoe is they even dare question his approach.
      Glad Metro Boomin stuck with his vision for "Heroes and Villain" which has been mad successful(2x platinum with lots of records already certified Platinum, 2x platinum and gold). Album got nominated for a grammy and lots of awards, he didn't let Drake's hit hunting derail his musical vision and I loooove Trance ft Travis Scott & Young Thug which is a perfect song and an additional Drake verse would have ruined the musical direction.

      That just proves he is a vulture picking at the carcass of a form of music I don't think he really cares about as a whole. Sure he doesn't have any responsibility to bring up the next generation, but if you love the art form you would be looking for a successor so that the art form continues to exist and grow, instead he does the opposite.

    Unpacking the 'MJ curse' unveils a profound music industry paradox. MJ's 'Off the Wall' and 'Thriller' were transformative, reigniting the industry but also triggering the homogenization of pop. Now, Drake echoes this narrative, catapulting hip hop commercially but perhaps constraining its artistic evolution. Unlike MJ's pursuit of innovation, Drake seems tethered to a formulaic success. Are we witnessing a cycle of repetition or a genuine progression in music? The industry grapples with the tension between commercial triumph and artistic breakthroughs, and the parallels between these two icons force us to question the very essence of musical legacy.

      Yeah, but you had Lil Wayne in the late 2000s, who was the biggest at the time selling a million first week. What I think Rory was getting at was that during that period Lil Wayne took Drake under as his protégé, and Wayne featured him a bunch. As a result Drake's debut album sold like half a million first week 2010. Plus, you had other newer guys in the under ground making noise like J. Cole, odd future, and Kendrick. This time it doesn't really feel like there is anybody that is super new that is that solid. A lot of the newer guys have either died or hit slumps like Jack Harlow, or Roddy Rich. I still have faith in Baby Keem though, I think his next album is going to come out next year and I hope he doesn't hit the slump like his peers. It could be a lull period like you said, but my fear is that is like rock in the late 2000s. It wouldn't be the end of the world as I still listen to new rock and metal artist but I feel like its too early for hip-hop to fall off the mainstream. I wasn't expecting hip-hop to become outdated until like the 2040s.

He had beef with Kanye, Diddy, Pusha, and Meek Mill, made a pretty garage House/Dance album that did not help Dance music at all, and recently in this decade dropped 3 albums that did not satisfy the critics nor the fans (Certified Lover Boy, Honestly Nevermind, For All The Dogs). Her Loss was decent to mixed reviews. You probably don't get what I'm saying but I'm saying that Drake is not helping no one, he's just tarnishing his reputation and legacy.

Drake is not suppose to be successful in the classical sense of hip hop he pulled off an amazing feat . Now I think he has to just back off and people would calm down he been winning for too long and people are just tired of it.😂

    I’m not too well versed in hiphop but what’s happening in drake is happening in pop, what’s happening with movie stars. What’s happening in Hollywood in general. Gen z isn’t producing the next big all encompassing stars but smaller niche artists and actors with loyal fanbases. Overall we are in a transition period.
    Looking outside of hiphop, the two biggest tours this year were by artists who have been in the game for decades. Beyoncé and Taylor Swift like drake are two artists who are too big to fail it seems. I think their approaches are different, but it’s the same. I cannot name a successor to drake, nor can I name one for Beyoncé. Maybe Taylor Swift has Olivia Rodrigo but only time will tell.
    Back to drake, he’s someone I listened to more of his older songs casually. He seems like so meh now yet he still is so successful. I just feel like he’s missing a lot of artistic direction and drive and integrity and so he makes what gen z would like but it’s like he has nothing to say anymore. Something about his energy makes me pitty. I think his songs do well but lately they don’t have as much longevity so he probably keeps putting out more bc he’s afraid of fading away. Being at the top is addicting. I think for his art and maybe even his mental health too, taking a complete step back for a few years, no singles, no features, maybe attend a few events to remind ppl he exists, but all around just living his life till he can find something to genuinely say without having to piggy back on what’s trending and using new artists would do him favors. Then he can stage a big comeback with a critically acclaimed album and maybe even a commercially successful one too.

    I have to say, there are people that have to release music constantly to stay relevant and those that can leave the game for 5+ years like Kendrick and still stay in everyone's minds. Drake has to constantly release new music to stay relevant. Drake hasn't been great for years and I feel like he would get more respect if he took some time off like the newer legends. He is like Eminem, peaked too early but could make a big comeback later on.

    • @arseeoliveira6934
      @arseeoliveira6934 6 місяців тому +1

      it'll be dry for folks that only listen to radio, tiktok and ig reels music, folks that don't wanna miss out on the hottest topics or something, because if we're being honest, Drake himself ain't doing nothing new or interesting lately. Why listen to the worst Playboi Carti, Lil Yacthy, The Weeknd, Partynextdoor, Uk rappers, Yeat and Bad Bunny's (to name a few) worst impersonations from Drake when I can go listen to each one of them? Then Praise or await anxiously for his music and trash or ignore the others (that he's ironically mimicking).
      That has to do with consuming what you're familiar with or attached. Me for example I gave up on his.music after CLB after noticing a pattern and Iknow damn well I'm not missing out a single thing, and with the internet, I have a variety on Innovators on my playlist. The only mainstream rap artists that are worth waiting for their craft are Tyler, Travis, Kendrick, Cole, Baby Keem or even Doja, giving that they standout from the bunch when it comes.to their artistic approach, the rest (with Drake included) are a bunch of bankrupt gimmicks that are stale, wave riders that don't push the genre forward, matter of fact, they only stunt the genre's growth since they're the majority now

    This is the effect of thinking too mainstream. I don't really care about Billboard spots when it comes to Hip-Hop/Rap. Leave that for the Pop genre. There are artists that are making an impact to round out the genre despite Drake being the top artist in the genre. Drake isn't the only one making a difference in the space.

      @saintkevinofficial 6 місяців тому

      You can't make a difference without the platform to reach millions of people. Whatever your idea is, it will be have to be synthesized by a mainstream artist for public consumption. Most times, underground artists are too eclectic and experimental for the general public. They're jarring to listen to because their sound is so unpolished and lacking structure. That's why people gravitate towards the mainstream
