    This is really helpful. It's funny how, as soon as somebody starts talking about these aspects of looping and patching etc--even super experienced and skilled guys--they just don't seem to know how to verbalize the logic clearly. I guess the loops make their brains loop. So it's nice that this fellow really knows how to make ir clear to the viewer. Nice job.

      Yes that would work. Remember to make sure your aux volume is turned to a suitable level. Likely send it to a mic input & mess around with audio setting in your laptop so it recognizes the audio. If you can't find a mic input you could use a USB audio adapter

    1) Plug single stereo 1/4 jack into Insert on audio mixer
    2) plug the left (white) into the FX INPUT
    3) plug the Right (red) into the FX OUTPUT.
    I do this to create an FX loop on a single channel. It works with my reverb guitar pedal.

    Thanks for this tutorial. One more question, for anyone, really: Is it standard, or "acceptable" to use to different effects (types and levels) on different instruments. For example, say I use my Lexicon mx200 for some Plate Reverb on the vocal track, would it be too much of a conflict of signals to use the board's internal effects, say, on the drums and then use some external effects (like a Boss multi effects processor) for my guitar signal? I suppose the answer is that there really are no rules and it's largely trial and error, but any general rules of thumb that might shorten my learning curve are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    My question is: when you create an effect loop, how come there is no audio feedback screaming sound (like holding a mike near a loudspeaker)?

    • @tiaxanderson9725
      @tiaxanderson9725 3 роки тому +1

      Hi, I'm not an expert, but I believe I can answer that one.
      When you hold a mic to a loudspeaker the signal that the speaker is outputting is picked up directly by the mic and (presumably) amplified, which is then send to the speakers which sends it to the mic etc etc. Each time amplifying the amplified signal; creating a feedback loop.
      When an effects loop is created the (let's keep it simple) mic sends it's signal (also presumably amplified) to both the main out and to the aux, the aux has an audio processor connected which adds an effect, and then sends the output to a *new* input. So while the effects loop causes a loop from the mixer to the mixer, it doesn't send the signal to the same input, thus no feedback.
      I suspect that if the aux knob of 11/12 was turned up we _would_ get a feedback loop as the signal is picked up by 11/12, send to aux, processed, and then send back to 11/12.

      I've been recording music myself for around 20 years. I mostly tried on purpose to use the bare minimum of effects on my instruments, except some distorted guitars, occasionally distortion on the bass, & maybe some subtle effects on vocals, but had to find other ways to do it.
      So I haven't tried this at all until the last few years & here's the thing... No matter what video I watch, what forum I read, or whatever else I try, It doesn't work.
      I've got 2 mixers I've tried this on & none of the videos I've watched will work with my aux or effect sends either.
      (Even the manuals for both mixers explain how to do this & it just won't work.)
      So I'd love to know this too.

    • @dadrobit700
      @dadrobit700 6 років тому +4

      Late reply but here's hoping this helps. :)
      Although the signal strength overall is indeed increased, it all depends on just how much reverb you apply through the reverb pots. Although the FX returns are at unity gain, they only receive as much signal as you send to them through the AUX send pots. Add only a little reverb on the guitar and the overall mix is not going to be anywhere near doubled, louder by a bit, but not doubled. Add tons of reverb on every channel and you're going to have a very loud and messy mix. Maybe you want to cut out a lot of the dry signal, (original sound) and dump a lot of the wet signal, (the reverb sound) in for a wash of reverb while keeping the master levels in line? Who knows what's best for your taste, it's just as much an art as it is a science, it's all up to you on what you do.
      Essentially, in the end it's up to the mixing engineer to make sure that the dry signal and wet signal are mixed so that the whole thing remains at a balanced and tasteful level.
