I've been struggling with understanding this concept for about two years of studying sound engineering, but after that video it finally makes sense. You are a genius of explanation, thank you so much!
No shit ....I am doing a diploma course in Sound engineering and we are at sound consoles and boy this still haunts me. Especially the high end consoles we their complex routing 😅😅😅. Nice video though .
Seems there is a theme here. I ask myself, how can I watch thirteen videos and not gain clarity on a particular subject and then watch and listen to one such as this that so simply makes total sense. And having gained understanding, why is it so hard for folks to explain something so simple. Some are going to make fun and say " maybe if you weren't an idiot.....". Well, to that I say, I'm not an idiot! I'm just a little slow. LOL! But seriously. I just learned this sh#@ and I could explain it better than those 13 other guys I have watched in two days. Moral of the rant is _ Thank you. You have my thumb up and may seem out channel the next time I'm a little slow.
4 years later and this is still a well produced video. Great job thinking through the storyboard and concept illustration. You've made the world a better place. I'm finally grasping a better understanding of these parts of the analog boards I used for so many years, but no one would buy external boxes where I could learn it intuitively. Now, they're like candy on most pro mixing consoles and DAWs have so much horsepower at their fingertips, it still feels like candy too. Thanks for shining a light on the *why* side of inserts.
This is EXACTLY what I needed to see. I was told by somebody that I should ONLY have EQ's on my inserts and should bus out all of the rest of my effects. Thank you for creating this video!!!
WICK YOU'RE AN INSPIRATION DUDE - YOU ALSO BRING KNOWLEDGE TO THE WORLD TOO - WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU!! YOU'RE BOOKS ARE EPIC AND LOVED YOUR SITE!
I sure did learn something today, Wick! Just finishing watching all of your videos here and there are some really great stuff! You really know how to explain things easily! Cheers!
Thank you, I've bought a mixer (was told to buy a slightly better one than you need because your setup will expand) I'm utterly baffled by all the buttons and knobs and have been using a fraction of its potential and often have the mixer poised to throw out the window. Your tutorials are helping but I am finding it tough and watch them many times.
Blackfera Music Thanks for your kind words. It took a long time but I'm back!- I'm currently working on new scripts and new videos. Hope to have much more stuff out in the near future...
OK, this is actually good info. The insert actually interrupts the signal while aux copies it. The manuals and only articles so often say "like a compressor" that it all blurred together and I now have 1 Y-cable / insert cable too few (though with the extra cables I guess I can just use one of the spare channels until I stumble upon another insert)
I have a question that I’ve been wanting to ask the right person. I will ask you. How would you chain a Smart C2, SSL Fusion, Red 3 Compressor and Neve MBP? If you could give me an opinion, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
So if you have a pre-fader Aux send, you can send entire signal to an effects unit and leave out the original signal. That would be essentially the same as an insert right?
Great explaining there, thanks! My question is, is there a reason why you wouldn’t want to run a compressor as an auxiliary, for use on multiple tracks, like drums? I’d like to compress two different drum machines, but my mixer only has inserts on tracks 1 and 2. My Akai I run stereo on a stereo track 11/12…and my Arturia Drumbrute to a mono track.
Kudos to you. You explain these topics so well. I learned a lot. One question: on some mixers like the Audient ASP 4816, they have certain inputs and outputs for DAW. How do you connect them to the patchbay? For example, you want to connect your guitar to a preamp then to your analogue mixer and in the end to your DAW. Best regards, Ali
One thing worth pointing out that I have run into and struggled with, aux sends are typically mono, while returns are stereo. This is usually not a problem unless I have a stereo synth channel which has some kind of stereo effect - tremolo, panning, ping pong delay - that is built into the synth. Once the channel is sent to the aux bus it gets summed to mono, thus losing all of the cool stereo field movement. In the DAW this is not a problem, digital is not prone to these limitations. If anyone has suggestions to get around this in the analog mixing world...
I watched this first i have begginer in studio ... butt all Videos are Fantastic i not have comment from begginer you can make Pro thank you very much for this what you doing !!
Hi tuneroneff, thats a great question. As oppose to AUX busses, Inserts are usually always PRE-fader. A good way to remember that is you don't want your fader position to influence the amount of signal sent to a gate or compressor that you have inserted. (as you would have to adjust the processors settings again. ) Larger consoles can even offer some options to change the order of the EQ - DYN and the INS. This seems pretty 'do-able' in a digital mixer, but as you can imagine these options require a lot of internal cabling on analogue consoles therefor smaller mixers won't offer these options.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. Is beeng a long time trying to figure this up, I finaly have it clear. I dont know if you have any video tha explaint diference In -10, +4 audio signal. thank you for reply.
Hey! I hope im gonna get that help now! Well i got a Behringer xenyx Q802USB. I want to connect it to a Composer/Compressor. The Behringer got no Insert Channels, so what can i do?
Thank you for your video! It’s really well explained. For my Part I want to create an aux on my behringer 8200 that is connected to my Audient iD22 on ada..but I do not know how to create a channel that will affect all of my synths that are plugged into my behringer. Do you know ho to do it? Thank you
love your info!! can you pleaseee explain the mastering process like you did the mixing because every time im done with my mix my master loses its dynamics and loudness (even though im not suppose to fight the loudness war cant help but try )
SamplesandWhatNot Yes indeed, I will be talking some mastering sessions later in this season. There will still be a lot of mixing stuff before the actual mastering tutorials, but I surely have it planned!
thank you!!! because your mixing tut helped me tremendously i even took notes and all lol.. any info you can just throw at me right now about getting my sounds louder without making my drums weaker because my kicks and snare always fall behind the synths or samples for some reason.
I subscribed your channel,Thanks For the great tutorial series friend..By the way..can we expect some of the tutorials that you said...like.. 1) Equalizing various instruments 2) Creating separation between sounds... in near future...???
Okay wait a minute. Why not putting a mono-compressor on the aux? From there you could apply the compression e. g. on a stereo-signal coming out of your interface. the main-out of your mixer is stereo, so now you made a mono-compressor doing stereo-compression, or would that be dual-mono then? anyway, I still did not try it, but if this is basically possible you would only need single mono-units in order to process a signal mono or stereo however you need it, right?
Great videos as always. Can I offer a suggestion? Can you lower the volume of the intro/outro music somewhat? I typically have to turn my volume down for the intro, up for the main content, then down for the outro, especially when I'm not at home.
Hi *****, thanks for your suggestion. It has actually never bothered me before but thanks for pointing it out. Even though no-one has pointed this out so far I'll try to keep it in mind. Cheers!
Yes goodday..I have question..may mixer is no have insert...how I can hook may compressor into my mixer...But may mixer is the have FX out and return...how can I hook it..thanks God lessss
Why does nobody say that you can also use a stereo plug all the way in as a direct out that is much more stable than a mono jack going half way?? The tip and ring are shorted. This way the jack has less probable movement and a better connection.

Another excellent tutorial. Thanks!
wow! i can't wait for hybrid mixing tutorials! thanks
any one know how i would use a kaos pad quad as my aux fx ? the kaos has got phono inputs. also is it better to get a mixer with stereo aux sends ?
Fantastic videos thank you very much for making them
Thanx for this amazingly well done video
So easily explained. I was having troubles, because I didn't know y cables were a thing. Now I now
WickieMedia IS BACK!!! WOOO!!!!

Does the insert effects is adding signal to mainout fronthouse speaker? Or only in the monitor speaker?

The video content looks great!
thanks zrebeKDemitri
Awesome video... Thanks so much
Best damn video on YT!!!
Would BBE Sonic Maximizers, like reverb units plug to channel insert or aux?
thank you! now i know that i need a pair of manipulated Y-cables for putting a compressor onto a master-insert on an analogue dj mixer setup.
Clearly explained. Thank you
THANK U! Amazing tutorials
How would it be if you used compressor on an aux channel?
Another question. What is the difference between Insert FX and Master FX?
hii
can u explain, the best way to hookup e
hardware gears to audio interfaces...
When are the mix like a pro sessions coming ! these are too good!

excellent sir!
is an “FX send” and “ FX return” the same as an “aux send” and “ aux return”???
Great video! Can you do a walk through with the UAD fatso plugin 👍
AVSbeats Yeah I can, I have it on the to-do list.. -Besides some plugin walkthroughs I'm picking up this season with many new tutorials!
Yes goodday..I have question..may mixer is no have insert...how I can hook may compressor into my mixer...But may mixer is the have FX out and return...how can I hook it..thanks God lessss

Very good.
you sir, are a genius.
Thank you!!!
Thanks, helpful
God bless u. Thank u soo much.
thanx....
You are the next man to be saint. Saint Wikimedia. I will write to Vatican now.
Someone should make insert fx, little echo, reverb, comp boxes with a wet/ dry knob, as insert modules for like £20 each.
It's been awhile since I have been here
