I think Ive only heard of a couple of these, i definitely havent seen any of them.
As a fellow indie animator, Takena's stuff is pretty solid. It just BLOWS how their work is put in the same vein as every other big anime like FMA and HunterXHunter and have the misfortune to be dunked on solely because they're Japanese. It's clear they're just doing these short little skits for fun.
Yeah, from the standards of high quality animation done by an entire studio of animators it does not compare. But for what it is, it is really quite impressive. Like claymation is really hard to do and anyone who does it deserves credit.

This is also true of stuff like Keiichi Tanaami's work, which showed up, what, ten different times I'm pretty sure? It's absolutely *not* for everyone, but the level of craft and imagination alone is deeply commendable.
Because even art students these day produce solid stuff or just ppl doing hobby it has become accessible so the mindset and expectation is insane.

That too is what I thought about at some point during this, lol. Many of these maybe were just someone's dabble with animation and unfortunately, it was saved for the world to see.

@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley yeah, it kinda sucks that most folks will see it from the lense that this is supposed to be like typical animation rather than Art installations and thus the message or intent is certainly going to get lost.
The laughing scene in FFX is purposefully exaggerated and ridiculous, even the rest of the party looks at you like you'rs off your rocker, and immediately after, Tidus and Yuna laugh normally at themselves for doing something so silly. It's not an example of bad voice acting.
I'm so tired of people using the FFX laughing scene as a "Bad VA" example. Thank you for saying this!

Half of this feels like a video report to MAL staff on potential shows to revoke from the list. They reject anime style made out of Japan but accept claymation entries? They must've gotten stricter over the years. Feels like at some point they did little to no moderation.
Because anime is not defined by artstyle, but a place of origin. Any other classification would be too subjective for an actual databasse

However I am aware of the argument you're making and why it has validity.
I do agree that in the context of a database like MAL, it should be specific. I would say even more specific than the true definition, of which MAL states clearly (nowadays).
They have not always done this, and that was my major point being made. They've changed their restrictions in the past, and for good reason (like people submitting for style vs origin, and MAL is heavy on origin).
Back to my original point though, Claymation is not anime, would you disagree? Anime is pretty much Japanese cartoon if we're REALLY grinding down the meaning, and I would not consider American claymation the same as American 'cartoons.'
@@AbystomaMexicanium TLDR: It's defined by an art style in it's literal definition. But MAL has to have it's own rules to govern a database that large. They didn't always. It has old garbage, that was my point lol. I like the definition of both style and origin personally, but to each their own.

That’s why I switched to Anilist. It’s UI is just better than MAL’s and you can change your rating structure from “out of 5” to “out of 10” including decimals. And it doesn’t seem to have arbitrary decisions on what gets on the list or not.
Small correction, many of the anime on MAL that are "unrated" have indeed been rated by people, just not enough people to meet MAL's standards for representing a mean score.
Yeah, I´ve seen some of them looked like chinese animation, which are very obscure outside of the country it came from.
I think that there needs to be roughly 100? ratings for an item to be rated. And then the rating adds that many “ghost” people who give the show a middling score when it finally does get rated.
Shame. I’d hoped it was possible to watch one unrated show, give it a ten out of ten, and then have it become the number one anime

If if's animated and made in japan, it's anime. Declassifying works based on artstyle is a slippery slope to hell.

I'd rather have things classified based on artstyle because at least it lets me know what I'm getting into. Traditional and Digital will not have the movement I'd be looking for when looking for Anime.
That and also as Joey pointed out, Porter Robinson's music video would undeniably be considered anime and yet it wasn't allowed on MAL.

Anyway, a challenge to you: try to come up with a definition of "anime style" which doesn't exclude plenty of actual anime. I'll even make it easier by not counting stop-motion among those "actual anime" for the sake of this argument.

takena's stuff definitely doesn't need to be on MAL but honestly? love the simplicity of the animations that still get the point across.
The Dracula film was actually based on the Marvel comic series "Tomb of Dracula", famous for featuring the first appearance of Blade.
I really like the weird stop-motion shorts by Takena, but I almost spit out my drink laughing when the name first got mentioned, those shorts are definitely not an anime.
1:22:43 Beastars (an actually good anime) actually does this too. And there's a good reason. If a character is only gonna be a part of the show for a short time, it's quicker to make a 2D animation than to make an entire 3D model for a small portion of the show. I think it works in Beatstars because it's so stylized, you barely notice until you look closer

Man Takena got absolutely done dirty by the people on MAL. Those shorts aren't bad at all, some really neat claymation going on there, reminds me of Lee Hardcastle
First of all I have to make it clear that I don't know too much about "avant garde" or this type of art which is definitely particular, but I just can't even begin to appreciate his work. Is it the only point of this type of short films to showcase the technical skills for doing claymation you have? If that's the case then sure, it looks clean. Other than that I can't find any appeal, I don't think it's creative, he's just doing anything. Of course I'm not expecting what I expect from actual shows, movies, etc, but besides showing some claymation skills I think it's not interesting or entertaining at all. If that's just how this type of media work I'll just say "It's not for me", but it doesn't feel right, there has to be more to it

Naria Girlsはこの手の声優漫才系アニメの歴史やVTuber前史を理解する上でも重要な作品。ハイコンテクストな作品である上に翻訳が困難なコンテンツだから英語圏では低評価なのは分かるが、ちゃんとアニメ史を分かってる業界人とかはこの試みを評価する人が何気にいるよ。
Angel's Dropはいわゆるカオスアニメというやつで、「おすすめのクレイジーなアニメ」「隠れた怪作」とかでよく名前が挙がる作品。こういうアニメもギャグアニメと並んで軽々しく翻訳したらダメだと思う。藤原啓治さんが音響監督をしている貴重な作品でもある[1]。 ちなみに私のおすすめのカオスアニメは「プリパラ」です。

Many of the short animations in mal that dont really fit in what we would consider anime were most likely added when mal didnt have a solid criteria yet what to add in their database. The criteria back then was probably "if it's an animation done in japan, we add". Gotta understand that mal is ran by the community. The mods who approve anime submissions are just regular mal users who got promoted. Not sure if that is still the case now, but back then it definitely was.
28:26, Hanoka's animation style reminds me of an early Newgrounds web series. I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe Flash was the main software of choice for many amateur animators back then.
I can tell you with full confidence that Rusted Armors (shown in 31:42) is what happens when a Japanese studio tries to imitate the success of the animation style of The Dragon Prince. The animation is identical, the character design is extremely similar and the dates fit. I'm not surprised it tanked but just looking at it... watch the first couple of episodes of Dragon Prince and tell me it's not a ripp-off

How about another list of Anime that you feel are actual anime that are the worst? Like ones that have a full or near full season, so no more one offs, and proper Anime so no Claymation, Just an idea for another Video great work as always.
All the short form avant garde stuff at the bottom of the list reeks of final projects that students of college level anime courses were forced to turn in (likely to appease the whims of a self-important professor) and somehow it made it on the internet.

It's kinda batshit that avant-garde art pieces were allowed on MAL but not the Scott Pilgrim anime.
I hate people dogging on FF-X laughing scene, it was meant to be awkward, it's a forced laugh Tidus does to lighten the mood. Proof is in the dialog an the fact the Japanese voice actor did it awkwardly too.
I hope you might consider one day to do this kind of list again, but only with whole anime series, ‘cause this was fun!

An important fact to note is that the Mars of Destruction anime is based off a PS2 visual novel (also produced by the same company). Most of (if not all of) Idea Factory’s OVA’s were made to advertise(?) their games, as they are primarily a video game publisher/developer. With this, the lack of context and plot makes more sense, as you need to play the accompanied game

I've only seen one show on this list, and it was Docchi no Maid, which I found by looking through every single entry on the GL category and adding anything I was interested in to my "plan to watch".
I saw it at the bottom and was morbidly curious, and the entire runtime I had a huge grimace on my face, I immediately rated it a 1, and thankfully forgot about it until this moment.
Technically, the unrated shows have a minimum number of ratings they need to have in order to get a rating (roughly 100?) also, if you were confused by the MAL average score formula, it’s basically like taking an average normally, but before taking the average it adds like a hundred imaginary people who rate the show as mid. (roughly 6.5)
3:50 people did rate the unrated ones, it just wont show up until there is at least 50 or 100 total ratings (forgot which one it was but one of those two), so that no one can put 3x 10* rating and get top1 anime
As a yaoi fan I have definitely sat down and watched a lot of baaaad anime (could barely call them anime with the level of animation gnhnh) in my time :'D I'm glad we are getting better quality these days in that genre!

Something that wasn't brought up but is still kinda interesting is that Mars of Destruction was, like most Idea Factory anime, made to promote a visual novel made by them with the same name as it. The visual novel goes past that last fight shown in the ova and actually follows up on all that needless exposition while going into some batshit insane territory. It's still not good, mind you, but if you were ever curious about if all that stuff brought up in the ova ever went somewhere then I'd recommend looking up the visual novel and/or some videos that talk about it.
