    I had some problems with my knee, but since i do heavy (below)parallel lowbar squats my knees are completely fine, but as you say many people who are weaker and have lots of issues say, that heavy squats destroy your knee :-D I just ask them "do you even squat bro" and they never even know how to squat nore target a relevant weight :-D

    In addition, humans have been defecating from a below parallel squat position, really up until the last 400 years. The body was made for this position. The elderly in Asian countries don't experience nearly the same level of mobility issues that we do here in America, I believe partly because below parallel squatting has become at minimum, a daily task for them.

    I suppose humans have lived a lot longer without seats for their toilets so that means our bodies have actually evolved to squat below parallel. I dont seem to find the time when the first seats for toilets were implemented but at least my speculation might hold some water pun intended.

    • @u.sgrant7526
      @u.sgrant7526 3 роки тому +1

      I might not have the credentials to answer your question, but I would strongly advise against it. While most machines at commercial gyms are stupid and largely useless, extreme minimalism will not only leave lots of weak links, but will also raise your chances of overuse through the roof. Performing too much of anything, including amazing exercises like the squat and OHP will lead to overuse injuries. If you, because of closed gyms for example, only have a barbell plus weights, and cant drop it hard on the floor like a deadlift, I would suggest adding in some floor presses, pendlay rows (with soft touch on floor), romanian deadlifts, maybe some good mornings if you can perform them safely and maybe some shrugs and barbell curls.

    • @GeneralSouL99
      @GeneralSouL99 6 років тому +3

      the upward torso is required for weightlifters because they need to accelerate the bar in an upward motion for the snatch+clean and jerk. (Also they catch the bar with an upward torso)

    Why does he call them below parallel squats? I thought he emphasized only going to parallel (hip crease parallel to top of the patella) and not going below that 90 degree angle (ass to grass for example)?

    Assuming that this is more of a hip and lower back exercise, if I am getting most of my muscle soreness in my glutes and upper hamstrings, would that suggest I am doing them correctly? Unfortunately I don't have anyone to watch me that really knows anything about squats.

      David McClelland exactly my point. When you come off as an authority in your field and a person these kids coming up in the game can trust for info, and they assume they can high bar (again, because it's not specified it's just said "SQUAT") and these kids start bending over in the high bar because uncle rip said so, they snap their damn back. Again my point is that the choice of words on SQUAT is ambiguous. There are other types of squats than just low bar. And saying "squat" does not imply "low bar squat"automatically.

    squatting isnt bad... making a long successful linear progression squatting 3 times a week and power cleaning will probably start to lead to problems though. this program is deceptively hardcore for those who do it right.

  • @tldhthompson
    @tldhthompson 6 років тому +2

    I don’t understand his focus on “beyond parallel.” The goal of a properly executed squat is parallel. That’s how it’s judged in a meet. Anything above that is a partial squat. Is he saying a proper squat is ass to grass? Something else?

      proper depth in a squat is when each muscle that is involved is stretched the most without the relaxation of any muscle. (At some point the hamstrings and some other muscles relax if you go much deeper than parallel)

      and yes the vast majority of people in the gym, if you tell them that, even though they have no words and cant counter your points in any way will still contract their faces and go back to doing partial squats
      i once talked to someone about the exercises that he chooses to do and he said to me at the start that i should know that it doesnt matter what im going to say, even if im correct, he is still going to keep doing the same things.... he literally said that even if he knows for a fact that what he is doing is a waste of time he doesnt care and hes still gonna keep doing that, this is the majority of people.
