Man thats a lot of cash you have there in equipment and it sounds great. Nice playing and vocals too. I am guessing the first example was the hardware and the second was the software. First example was fantastic sounding. I just picked up the LA-610 MK2 for my project studio and can't wait to try it out.
Thanx for setting up the comparison, it helped clarify the differences (Nice work on the tune too!) ... The UA counterparts are clearly more warm and open, and the UAD plugin seems to be more 'Hi-Fi' .. however they sound fantastic.
It's a great comparison, and very useful for me since I'm considering purchasing an Apollo interface. I want to point out to everyone also though that while this is about as close a comparison as one could make with these channel strips, I don't think it can be the same as using a standalone 610 with a standalone 1176 or LA2A - I know they're the same circuits but there could still be a lot of variation internally the way the preamps are hitting the compressor and the physical settings of the knobs etc. if there were a software model of these specific channel strips I'd be interested to hear that too. Thanks for the nice video.
Thanks for this! Bigger difference than I had expected. I have to say I much preferred the vocal on the UAD version. Can't say I like the guitar more on one or the other, but they do sound very different from each other. I think I would go with the 610 Mk II here.
Yes and that is why every time there is a poll to tell which one is which it is always close to 50/50. Show me one that isn't. It is in the difference in volume that everyone is getting side tracked by.One guy commented one time it's the placebo effect!
Both sound good but the hardware imho sounded better and more radio ready on both vocals and guitar. It just had a thicker more well rounded sound than the plug ins.
Wonderful comparison, plugin is so digital and lifeless vocals are too flat digital sounding but the hardware is thick and natural, nice singing, thank you :)
I jumped to the comparison and without knowing which one is the hardware, I felt that the first one sounds more "like a record". The second one is cleaner but not the worst. Nice comparison dude. Cheers
Thanks for sharing. A trained ear can hear the difference. What I suggest people listen to is how the high frequencies sound harsh on digital and there is less “body” in the mid range. Harshness can be fixed with dessers and multiband compression but I find that I have to add more inside the box to get that sweet saturation that analog already provides. I have 610mk2 and Apollo as well and noticed differences also. Not bad! Just different.
I preferred the sound of the UAD emulations. I think the hardware would sound better without being pushed so hard. The saturation is just a bit much, though in general I love the 3D tube sound.
This is UA-cam you can't tell exactly in my experience the Wav files can be totally different. All shootouts that are blindfolded with a voting poll comes very close to 50/50 which means no one can hear the difference. Two exact hardware units will also sound different. Does it have the same mojo, UAD's case yes. In the words of Frank Filipetti "If it sounds like a Pultec, it's a Pultec." Look him up. Check out the Avid videos, you'll learn a lot.
That being said the hardware is louder than the plugin. Again this is UA-cam. Hardware is always louder in most of these videos done purposely or by chance? I don't know but it alters everyone's thoughts.
I thought the hardware sounded a bit "woofy" on the guitar, though in a cool way. I'd like to hear what would happen if the level were brought up a little more on the guitar on the UAD version. I think people are overlooking the fact that he set controls identical on hardware and plugs. I suspect if he had dialed up the sounds to taste independently the difference wouldn't be as obvious. The point being what matters is the end result when you dial up a channel for a source and track it. This demo was nice but didn't really show that.
usually i prefer hardware but in this comparision the plugins sounded better to my ears, not better but glued together, your vocal n guitar sat well in the mix with those plugins.the hardwares were really full sounding and had more dimensions than the plugins though.
Yes and no. Hardware does not have more dimension, placebo effect. I only compared the Guitar part. Hardware was thin because the guitar moved relative to the mic on the hardware example. This is why you can't do two separate performances to compare, it doesn't work. Usually 90% of the examples are not level match and are fooling your ears. Usually the two almost sound identical on any well modeled plugins which there are many via Waves, UAD, NI, Slate. Plus this is UA-cam, you really need wav files to compare properly. Now I have listened to the vocal and the two examples are pretty close. No two hardware units will be exact as well.
My humble honest opinion is that the breadth and width of the first take is very organic and the second track is great but more forced when compared with the first. I think without hearing the first track I would be much more impressed with the second.
Believe it or not you are doing this backwards… for more color crank the gain selector down (left) and crank the level on the preamp higher to make up for it. You can get great saturation like that.
First off this is You Tube, need wav files. What I hear, once I match the level, is the vocal performance sounds close on both. On the hardware unit the vocalist is closer making it sound warmer but has moved the Guitar relative to the mic making it sound thinner. Funny opposite on the software version. Moral of the story is you have to use the same performance. Usually most of these plugins sound like the hardware with slight differences. Two like hardware units will also have slight differences. Problem is most of these tests are not level matched fooling your ears. Protools expert is pretty well matched and does a poll. Anything with a poll always comes close to 50\50. This means no one really hears a difference it's just the placebo effect!
I'm just catching up and ran across this video. May I ask: Why did you choose the 1176 for vocals and the LA-2A for the guitar? My brain would have it the exact opposite-- The heavier compressor on the guitar and the more gentle compressor on the voice. Just wondering why you chose your approach. Thank You! Cool video!
Punchy vocals and smooth guitar feels like a combination that would create a gentle guitar texture with clear vocals that carry prominence, with tight mid-range. That's been my thought process when I've been in situations where I've done this!
Hello! Thank you for the video. Could you make a comparison of the la-610 and 6176 compressors on vocals or on an acoustic guitar? With tight settings 6-10 VUmetr. Many people do not know what to choose, you would really help.
Wow! HUGE DIFFEENCE in my book. #1 is just big...and all of the stuff we love. #2 sounds thinner...deflated...and digital. You might be able to make up for that with the right plugs and stuff....and if you didn't play them back to back no one would know or care....but real gear is where it's at.
The first example.. which I assume is the hardware is way muddier. Too much saturation and it seems louder too... not even a volume matched comparison.
Your limited skills as a singer and guitarist are perfect for this. We can really hear the gear doing it's work. That is wonderful. The gear is really beautiful.
Hi. I haven't had this setup for a few years now, so couldn't tell you. But I found the instructions on the net, and it wasn't too difficult. Hoping you figured it out by now.
Great video, showing comparison, I have the 6176 and imn about to get the AU Apollo interface and wanted to know if I should still use the hardware ?, Whats your thoughts now youve had these for a while now
Hei Are, thanks a lot for your video. Very helpful for me using UAD Apollo but thinking to get some Hardware. Very nice capture of the Dylan spirit!! Very nice voice!!!...(maybe a little too fast for my taste) That is not meant as a critic :-)
Happended to me the same way. My Apollo led to me basically auditioning hardware via the UA plugins then I picked up an LA 610 and then an SSL Six and in the end ironically purchasing a Prism Lyra! Now looking at a satellite to keep using my Tape saturation and Moog plugins that I like.
the way he nailed the same personality in both takes gives me the confidence to trust his competence to recreate a fair comparison... Reasoning that eeking out a sound yer aiming for but in both case scenarios by the same person otherwise using the same gear and instruments is a valid survey.
+theUglyManowar also he was humble about his singing and performing ability... sounded great with an honest voice and personality! Without as much we would never of had a Jimi Hendrix!
Matthew Ray what you call "unmatched" volume is due to the larger headroom and bigger sound of the analogue gear. Learn a bit first, then you can criticize.
+Engam You are not correct it is a volume mismatch and the Guitar changed position relative to the mic. Done right there are only minor differences. However no two hardware units sound identical either. Anyways, Check out Protools Expert video on the 1176 and 160. Every time there is a video, everyone says the hardware wins. However, when there is a blind poll it comes out almost 50/50. Every friggin time no matter what! Try to find one that doesn't where there is a definite, you can't. Again this is UA-cam you need the wav files. Ok take care.
Sweetwater or any other music store that sells pro gear. They are super common in rack mount gear. You can get them looking like almost anything. Furniture, amps, computers, speaker cabinets, etc.
The volume knob on the console does not effect the recording level. I always use headpohones though (to avoid bleed into mic's since I'm in the same room), and put the monitors on mute.
Hi I have a question: I have the apollo 8 and the 6176. My problem is I can not get a signal to the 6176 from my apollo. Is it difficult to make it work? Can you share a tip maybe? would be grateful. Thank you.
Hi - it sounds like you have it hooked up wrong. I just followed the instructions on the UA website. Just remember that there are two outputs and that you need to use the line output on the preamp side (not the compressor side). Connect it to line input on your Apollo and that's it. Then you just have to make sure the levels are set right.
Hello again... I am very interested, so please write to me if you should find the time for making one. I need just one for my UA6176 e-mail address: kasonjo@gmail.com Kind regards, Karsten
Well what a site, nice song ..but what a difference ...first was alive close full, massive...and than plugs...second version would be ok if i didn't hear the first one...
this can't be right. The analog recording sounds way superior, not even close to the AB comparisons on UA's demo videos, where studio veterans can barely hear a difference between vintage gear and the plugins
+Slim Yelow I could probably have made the digital recording sound better by using different settings . But this was done with the same settings on both sides . For example: If I was to record digital only I would not use unison compressors when recording vocals and guitar simultaneously since the compressors tries to put gain in unwanted sounds - in my particular case. I should have done that for analog too - added compression after recording. I am a novice though so I'm sure this could have been done better. But these are the results with the exact same settings, the way I had it set. It could also be that I had too much gain (I have later learned to pay MUCH more attention to headroom) and that the analog devices just handles too much gain that much better. With less gain, the difference might have been more subtle. In this case I simply unplugged the mic's from the analog devices and moved them to the Apollo.
+Slim Yelow Comparing an end-user's demo to UA's is about as asinine as it gets! There is a helluva lot more happening in the mix on UA's demos vs a 'real-world' comparison. You're not a studio vet, and neither is Are .. so bagging on his A/B is senseless.

Really enjoyed the song choice here in capturing the vintage character of the 610. Appreciate you posting this.
Thanx for setting up the comparison, it helped clarify the differences (Nice work on the tune too!) ... The UA counterparts are clearly more warm and open, and the UAD plugin seems to be more 'Hi-Fi' .. however they sound fantastic.

Felt strangely emotional as you came in playing Bob Dylan there. Brought it all back to the music
It's a great comparison, and very useful for me since I'm considering purchasing an Apollo interface. Late to your party but I hoped you got this now. You are being deceived by the volume difference not the fatness of the hardware unit.
Analog Wins every time! More of a natural sound. Thanks

+Josh Salant Thanks! I use it for vocals too now - and the 6176 for guitar. I like the optical compressor best for vocals. So nice and soft.

you actually sound really cool !
+Robert Macias Thanks man!:)
Like the second one :)
You have a very interesting voice
Where did you get those beautiful wooden racks?
Thanks! I made them myself. Pine shelving from hardwood store and rack tracks ordered on the net. Then I sanded and washed in walnut colored stain.
@@techstuffandmore What!!!!!! They are absolutely gorgeous.
hi there, i just purchased a TLM49 - seriously thinking about getting a UA 6176 - how well do you think they blend together ?

how do you turn up the monitoring volume of the vocals via the console without effecting the recording level into the daw

this can't be right. The analog recording sounds way superior, not even close to the AB comparisons on UA's demo videos, where studio veterans can barely hear a difference between vintage gear and the plugins
