what always impresses me with drivers of old eras is they take a hand off the wheel to throw a switch or change a gear etc at 190mph with minimal power steering!
You get used to steer with the whole body. I took off the belt of the PS on my 93 sentra with wider and softer tyres than factory. I worked as a delivery like that, while riding you don't notice much but the tight parking, oh that was a training on its own.
Its no wonder he looks dicey. I just read there on this run the turbo wastegates were stuck shut so the engine was producing a lot more power than it should have. he made it to 229mph on the mulsanne between the chicanes!
Guys... On this lap, his wastegate didn't open... Turbo was in absolute full power, this guy didn't cared, goes full throttle anyway and destroyed the speed record. And at this day, no one didn't compete this.
The car went from 800 hp to 1100 hp and became an uncontrollable demon that only that driver on that historic day could control and break all records disobeying the orders of his superiors. Incredible
Regardless if it was making more power or not that thing is was extremely tight. Couldn’t imagine driving something at that speed for hours at a time that beat your hands, arms up and fought you like an old antique tractor in a bumpy field

i heard rumors at this time team communication was under tension and just cause everything was already tested,
blundell went stupid reckless.

Not even remotely close. The BMW Formula 1 engines of 1986 could exceed 1,400 horsepower in qualifying trim.
