I love your budget was initially $1000 because it’s nice to finally relate to an apartment hunter not having an insane budget. My budget was $900 or less but I’m in Chicago and was not only looking downtown, and I was sticking to my budget. I had too. By luck, a family friend had a building with a 2 bedroom for $900 and a bonus room that worked out. Apartment hunting is just as stressful as house hunting. 😫

What you said is true. We were going around La Crescenta for apartment viewings when we came across this apartment we’re living in right now. There was not even a vacancy sign outside, just the name of the property management company and their ofc number. I just felt compelled to call the number to check, and turns out they did have an apartment available! The manager let us tour the apartment right away since there were construction people doing some work anyway and it was open. We fell in love with the place as soon as we saw it! It had big windows so lots of natural light, lots of storage (so many linen cabinets!) and it came with 2 parking slots. No units above and below us, we have fantastic views of the mountains, and the neighborhood is very quiet. The previous tenant lived here for 20yrs - that’s already a good indication that the place is nice. We really lucked out on this one! ☺️ So yes, don’t just rely on the apps, just drive around the neighborhood, you will find more that way. 😊

I been living in LA for 8yrs and I work as a nurse and I live in a good area, but truthfully the rent is high.. and the crime is only getting worse I’m relocating to another state, every time I hear someone wants to live in LA I tell them the truth, the homelessness is everywhere and crime is crazy and the traffic is no joke the gas and rent has only got worse.. not worth it and people just throw money away to rent it’s just not worth it. Truthfully it’s not what it seems at all.

I used to live in Los Angeles, CA decades ago. When I graduated from high school, there were apartments available from $300 to $500 a month. But I still couldn't afford the rent if I had a full time minimum wage job. I lived with my parents for several years and then I joined the U.S. Army. Now, you'd be lucky to live anywhere in Los Angeles for $1000 a month---maybe in downtown or in a neighborhood where you have to dodge bullets on your way home from work. There are places where they offer a dorm room and a shared bathroom for $500 to $800 a month. The landlords can pretty much charge whatever they want because there's a housing shortage and politicians like Gavin Newsom will make sure it stays that way with all the strict regulations builders are subjected to before they build new apartments and houses in California.

I was there for 9 months in Long Beach at 1900 ocean. The rent got higher when they renovated and new management took over. So now I’m in Texas. And I don’t have a car but I miss living on the beach. It was nice while it lasted.
The only thing I hate about California is that the homes are old and when they renovate it cost so much. And the taxes… and not a lot of elevator buildings. I miss my palm trees 🌴 🌴🌴🌴 I guess I’ll always be California dreaming. ☺️ I learned a long time that California is not the only place to try and make it. It’s too crowded and too competitive and I don’t want to be an actress anymore. I never wanted to be a starving artist. I left that dream alone 20 years ago lol. Best decking made since I don’t want to be in the spotlight.

I will say as your budget goes up the inventory does too. It's been ridiculous. I'm actually looking to move now because my current place has raised my rent 5 times in the 7 years I lived here and the past 2 consecutively since it was allowed again so now I actually need to consider finding a better place. I've been out here for over a decade now so it's par for the course, but man do I miss those 2010 prices.

I live in Boston and have been planning to relocate to LA for about a year now to build out my podcast and coaching business. I'd like to build my network in LA to help enhance my podcast and get guests on that are in entertainment. I'm interested to hear your opinion on whether it's worth the move to LA for this reason?

I think you can make some really good connections if you live here, but you can also make good connections if you do frequent work trips here! For example, I have a hair stylists based in Ohio, where the cost of living is much lower. But she comes to LA each quarter to connect with models and UA-camrs and people in the entertainment industry. That way she can build her network without the high price tag
