So You Wanna Make Games?? | Episode 1: Intro to Game Art
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2024
- In this video, we talk to game artists about the purpose art serves in games, as well as some of the foundational tools they use to achieve a desired experience: shape, color, and detail. These tools are leveraged across the full art pipeline, and this video provides a brief overview before we dive into each of the art sub-disciplines later in the series.

“Every time you consider stopping, just consider not stopping”
www.reddit.com/r/wowthanksimcured/
Honestly I've seen a lot of people memeing that sentence but it's deeper than "just don't stop 4Head" imo. What I think he meant was: "whenever you feel like giving up think about what could happen if you dont".
Shaie holy words man, holy words.
I like that advice, and this advice too "Practice until the moment your hands feel tired and sore".
(5 years later...) It's an awesome sentence in fact!
That way, we don't even overthink about it, but simply do it 🏃
Game art is awesome but can we just stop awhile and appreciate the narrator with on point editing? That's freaking art too.
Nah he tried too hard and it was cringe

The two most important things I learned from this video are:
1. When you're new, concentrate on quantity over quality.
2. "Every time you consider stopping... ...just consider not stopping."
just what I need at the age of 27, with no direction to go. Thanks!
Tell me about it bro, same problem here. I feel like this is very common at this age, and alot of people are feeling lost. But how can we solve it is the question. Inspirational videos and watching things i might be interested in, doesnt give enough motivation to actually start to do what I trully want. Those baby steps are missing
@@panagiotistsakiris5802 well, doing the baby steps is what you have to do yoursel fin the end. One of the big problems our generation has is that we see all of those People who already make "finished" stuff... and sometimes they are at the same age and younger than we are. That makes it very easy to forget that it actually takes a long time to get to this point, especially since we only see the success and never (or only very rarely) the failures, scrapped designs and similar things.
Another thing we never get told is that it is "not too late to start", especially since this feeling is very easily felt if you do not know what to do or where to go.
I strongly recommend watching the video "Interview with Fabien Mense" by Bobby Chiu if you feel like you are too old for getting into art :)

28 here. i've neglected my artistic skills and my interest in games my whole life because boomer parents made sure to convince me college and an office job would secure me a life. jokes on them, i live in a mid-economic crisis third world country and the major i chose+finished hasn't gotten me a single job for over a year. also, before that, i got a boot to my ass after 3 years of dedication to the last company i worked. i guess jokes on me, right. now with this coronavirus shit closing every business in my town i feel like this is the call i needed to sit my ass at home and do what ive been doing hidden in my bedroom when my parents werent looking: draw shit. except now imma draw shit for my life. i don't think ill have much of a life waiting for me if i don't do the only thing i can do with these dumb sausage fingers of mine. but it's damn sure gonna be hard as fuck to deconstruct the walls i built around that possibility for over a decade.
@@t.k.5088 Tell me about it. I'm 31 and just at the end of my second graduation, in my finals, after failling one semester, I've collected courage to pursue game design fully. I've been running away, trying different stuff, but we all know there's no other stuff. This is the stuff we want and we should dedicate to it even if it isn't profitable. We must make it work. It doesn't matter what people say or think about it. If you love it and work a lot, there's nothing stopping you, really.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this video! I never would have thought this would be something Riot would do. Thanks for this and I look forward to future videos! :)
It was super cool seeing Stick Fight shown in the montage of games! Thanks!

@UmWut have some respect they're a great company.
Fancy seeing you guys there.
Hey, are you ever/have you released games on the switch
How are you not verified
I dont know when or why did you think about making this kind of videos, but it is amazing. Thank you for making them, it is kinda new to see a company make this kind of things and its pretty inspiring, thanks.
Glad you liked it :)
That is a great idea riot games thanks
As an older person who is beginning my hobby as a game developer, it is truly inspiring to hear the young professionals (I have kids their age) be so encouraging.
something about the narrarator's voice or maybe the editing, i don't know but this video is really aesthetically nice.
Yeah, everything they talked about in the video they carefully implemented :3
My motto is now “every time you consider stopping, consider not stopping.” Genius.
Incredibly thankful for this series, especially the tips that people inside the industry give you, thanks a lot for making this, riot!
Thank you for creating this series! It’s super helpful for those like me who aspire to be like those in the video!
I love transparency! Keep on going and show more and more stuff - maybe you can provide kind of a "school system" for your fanbase and by that inspire people. This might give you a boost and especially the future development of games in general!!
Now this is truly some great content from an unexpected source !
Thanks a lot Rito !
These are some really informative videos !
Amazing series, totally appreciate the effort that went into making this. Watched the whole thing at once!
"being creative is not a vocation it really is about a way of life"
So true and probably our natural way of life (all kids are creative until they experience the adult's world).
Great video!
I'm working on my portfolio right now in order to get into grad school for game design and this series has been crazy helpful! Thanks so much!
If u placed a Netflix intro before the vid id believe it, great editing. Imma watch this entire show cuz I wanna be a game artist/creative director. Thxx for making such a great content like this.
Just when I began to do exactly this you upload this Video.
NOOOICE
That's a slightly scary thumbnail
"Slightly"
That thing feeds on children's screams
This is "THE" video I was searching for to understand different types of art style for game development 👍🏼
This is a great video! I'm an art teacher and will use this in my art career lesson about being a Video Game Artist. It explains and touches on everything I needed to say, all the while showing a diverse sample of artists. Thanks!
That's amazing! We're really excited to hear this can be helpful in your classroom.
Okay this is so great!! I'm an artist at the age of 21 and my long term goal is to be a concept artist in a games company even though in the country i'm living in (tunisia, north africa), there isn't much chance to do so. That means i have to work 3 times harder than anyone else with the same dream as I am. I watched this video in doubt but after doing so, I realised that this is a blessing from god to me because it gave me clarity i didn't have on stuff I didn't know even existed and by the time I finish the series I'm dead sure I will be on the way. THANK YOU !!!!!
So glad you guys started this series
This is absolutely amazing. I just recently came across this and I feel like it is my calling. I was having troubles trying to figure out what I want my occupation to be when I get out of school, and I've been stuck in the "math" field because I've been only looking at the professions that stereotypically pay more. However I also found during this time that I really want to go into Multimedia Artists and Animators, mostly because I have a talent for art and I like video games haha. But I have no idea where to start, and here I am being thankful about these videos and hopefully in the future I'll be working on the next big game. :)

The Chelonian - what are you doing now at this point of your life?
@@raghavgangrade7037 I'm in college working for my art major!! ^-^
@@thechelonian8079Awesome that you went with it :)
Can i just mention how awesome that 'Welcome to Tatooine' shirt is.
Thank you guys very much for these videos. ..they will surely help me and a bunch of other people!!
Amazing series thank you so much! Really helping me make sense of the game making world :)
Where the dude said saturation contrast the first time at 5:19 , that was actually value contrast you showed. Saturation is the "amount of pigment" so to speak, how strong the hue of the color comes through. Value is the "brightness/darkness" of a color. A better visual for saturation contrast would be to have grayish washed out orange boxes next to a fully saturated "neon" orange box.
Working with you is my dream and I hope one day I'll achieve it! Thank you for this inspiring series!
That last part was the best thing they could've put in the video- not stopping even if you want to give up!! I have up on me long ago, lost my passion for drawing and I hate everything I draw - may it look way better than anything I could've imagined to draw years ago. I always wanted to design great things, make my own games, wrote so many stories and have characters filled with the love I had for designing that I still adore. I hope, getting "older and wiser" or whatever hahaha, that I might be able to do better, to get better and start to find my passion again...
Loved every video!!!...thanks a lot im making a switch from advert to game design this videos give me the power to work hard and be commited to this incredible industry
Ok, as a game PROGRAMMER I launch the video out of curiosity while coding. After 2 minutes I was just taking notes from the video for my next games. These advices are super important to hear for every one involved in the creation of games, good job ^^
Thank you Rito. Very helpful and cool from you guys to do something like that.
you guys seriously motivated me. thank you to all
This is juste INCREDIBLE, SUCH TALENTED PEOPLE DOING THEIR BEST TO MOTIVATE AND TEACH NEWBIES, Thank you
Bro... You are awesome. You are a gift to us all. Thank You for how You present this series. Every video, not just this one. Well done. May You Prosper and Flourish and All Hindrances Dissipate before You and your Way Be Clear to be Your chosen Path. Not the meant. But what You want. Amen.
underrated video, this actually has great tips and has inspiring artists in it. ty
I love this series!! U make it interesting and super fun to listen to. I wasn't sure what I would like to word with when I got older but now I am certain! I love drawing and playing games and I have a lot of creative! BOOM! Combined. I would love to see this videos everyday. I want to thank u from me and everyone else who love this series.
As a student of multimedia arts and dreaming to be an animator, this was so motivating and inspirational, thanks rito, and thank you to the featured artists and to all the artists that work on my favorite game for making it look, sound and feel awesome.
I'm curious as to how far youve come, your comment was 3 years ago. Updates? How are you going with it all? I'm so scared to start
@@Ljutslfer Hi there, never thought I'd find someone to be interested in this haha, honestly, COVID made me take a huge detour when it comes to my plans. I had to drop college and find a job and be self sufficient, not as much time for art these days cause of work, I still plan to be in the art field someday when things are hopefully more stable and more when I have more savings in the bank. That's all from me for now, take care friend :)
I want to go to school for animation or digital art specifically so I can go into game art. This is very helpful
Amazing.... just AMAZING! Thanks guy for creating that video series.
this video was so well done!!
thanks!!
i really like good content about education, keep the good work guys!
I'm gonna love this series! Thank you so much Riot!
I'm studying visual and graphic design and seeing my friends and mates drawings and projects usually makes me think "Am I talented enough to do this? Maybe I should do something else..." But I keep coming back to the art because it's what I really love, and I want to get better at it. Thank you so much for doing this series of videos, it's really helpful and motivational for people who tend to compare themselves with other artists. I will consider "not stopping" in the future haha
keep going!
this is such a cool series!! thanks so much for making it
LOL after i watched the videos and read the comment i realized this series of videos are from riot games. I was wondering why so many artists from riot games XD very helpful video actually. Helped me to have a direction and knowing so much more about game art ^^
Wow. Really nice video. I don't know how I missed it for two years.
this was uploaded on the most convenient time for me, thanks!
Hey how did I miss that. Promising series and great initiative. Not only is this very clear and well explained for youngsters, but it makes a nice review of the fundamentals and overall a nice cover of all the different jobs. Great work, Riot ;)
Always wanted to do something with art, and started rather recently with focussing everything on learning to be an artist. This video is really motivating and helpful, and even though I've got a long way to go, I still want to spend everything I can to finalize my final goal; working at Riot Games!
No wonder games are so Kool, there's a lot that goes in them. Ty for sharing this. Moving to the next episode. Cya there
Thank you, i m starting out in this industry and was really confused where to start

OH MY GOD! I love this Riot Games thanks a lot. Can't wait to watch it all :)
Amazing series! Funny, entertaining, informative. Thank you :)
Cool! Would be also awesome if a mini guide like this was made focused on Writing or Narrative design for video games. Cool stuff!
Glad I’m learning this now
I was already expecting to see Tyson talking about style, and Moby talking about shapes!! I wish these videos existed 3 years ago

thanks for the motivation rito great video
This series is so cool and helpful
Sonia here, from 홍익대 (Hongik University) in South Korea, one of the top schools here for Art and Design. This semester I was given a class (that I didn't ask for) outside of my knowledge base-- English for Games Graphics Design Majors. I reached out to some of the major professors before the semester started, and several responded by sending me their syllabi and course content (and interesting articles). Of course, I also did a lot of internet searching on my own so that I could get a basic understanding of (and appreciation for) GGD and teach in some context. (I am a 50-something year old woman whose gaming career started with Pong and ended with Ms. PacMan). I have found this series to be life-saving (OK, maybe not, but let's say class-saving!). SYWMG is basically my textbook! The subtitles are on-spot, so students with lower level listening abilities can read along. The graphics are helpful for visual learners (also, for teachers like me who need to connect the words to their concepts), and the length is perfect. I cannot thank you enough for creating these and putting them out there for me to find and use!
This was really fun and informative, thanks👍🏼
Incredible editing, insane storytelling. Literally the best introduction to game dev as a whole. By the way, I want to know whether if shaders are used to create those wriggling effects for texts.
Last quote - so powerfull!
okay it’s official, im changing my major
This video maan. 13/10. It was amazing!
How am I just discovering these. These are great!
Also the narrator sounds like Ezreal to me lol
so lucky me that I found this in the first day of 2019 :3

Awesome job, the video's fun to watch and really inspiring. I was actually having one of those down moments. I was doubting on my capacity to become good enough to become a professional game artist. I might still be in one of those moments but it actually helped me to hear that "just consider not stopping" Sentence ^^.
Thanks alot, would love to work with Riot by the way 💜
I am a developer, looking for an artist. Do you want to colab for a platformer game?
Thank you so much. When i grow up im going to become a concept artist for a gaming company.
This list of videos was extremely helpful, thanks Riot! Also, technical artist are Gods, aren't they?
