SMT IV: Apocalypse - I-IV Messiahs Only Vs. Stephen (Apocalypse Difficulty)

- This is a great boss fight, which ranks among the most difficult battles I've ever won. I love how the Messiahs can just barely win on their own even on Apocalypse difficulty, although I'm not sure the developers meant for that to be the case. I had previously won this battle on War difficulty by only using the Messiahs, but the margin for error is much smaller on Apocalypse. Here are the main differences from War difficulty:
1. Stephen's attacks do more damage. For the most part, this actually doesn't change too much from War difficulty. However, when the Messiahs are at +1 or Stephen is at -1 Demi-fiend dies to Wave Function + Calamity Code and Flynn dies to Wave Function + Energy Compression, which wouldn't happen on War difficulty.
2. The Messiahs' attacks do less damage. This is very significant because the battle drags on significantly and the team is severely starved for MP late in the fight.
3. The Messiahs' attacks miss much more often. This is also a huge deal because they need to be able to consistently heal and deal as much damage as possible to win. I often opted to use weaker single-hit attacks with The Hero and Aleph because the miss rate of their multi-hit moves makes them too risky to use in most situations. In general, you have to consider the risks of missing every time you attack, but in this battle there's often not much of a choice and you just have to hope that your attacks hit.
To simulate a Messiahs Vs. Stephen battle as much as possible, my rules are as follows:
1. Nanashi's team is allowed to buff themselves to survive, but they can never debuff Stephen.
2. Nanashi can attack Stephen once per turn to prevent him from using Singularity Wave on the Messiahs. The Trident melee weapon is equipped, which hits three times to maximize the chance of damaging Stephen at least once. It does minimal damage since Nanashi has a magic build.
3. Nanashi's team is also allowed to use Magaon and Dekaja to negate Pair Production if Stephen uses it on their turn.
Here are a bunch of moments that I highly recommend checking out. It's crazy what I managed to live through in this attempt.
10:12 Not good. Stephen is at +3 and is about to lead off his turn against the Messiahs with Singularity Wave.

13:46 Good thing Mediarahan healed Demonee-ho for 1 HP,.
22:16 Halfway through the battle, and the MP struggle begins. I purposefully limited my Great Chakra and Bead of Life usage to minimize the MP lost to Black Hole; it's a double-edged sword, but I think it's necessary to win on Apocalypse.
24:07 This is the only turn that the Messiahs fail to damage Stephen. Nanashi's team was hit by one Singularity Wave because of this, whereas the Messiahs had to live through three Singularity Waves. Overall, Nanashi's team had a net negative effect on the Messiahs' ability to win this battle.
26:03 NEVER GIVE UP. EVER. In reality, I was really close to just throwing in the towel and resetting, but I figured I might as well ride it out since Stephen was almost in the red. I thought that maybe the Messiahs could take out the remainder of his HP in a turn or two; little did I know that it would take me 15 minutes to take out his last 20,000 HP. Nanashi also decided that it wasn't important to be accurate with his back to the wall.
27:16 Stephen is CLUTCH. I didn't even need to attack him this round to prevent Singularity Wave, which allowed me to recover from a literally hopeless situation.
28:37 This situation wasn't much better than the previous two turns. I needed to heal, use Magaon, Dekaja, and damage Stephen all in one turn but I had to pick two. Somehow, it worked out.
37:02 My final Bead Chain. They give you just enough MP recovery items and Bead Chains to make this the slightest bit possible on Apocalypse difficulty and no more.
38:49 Here we go again. Reboot Code + Wave Function is an absolutely brutal combination and Nanshi's team had to live through it twice, although it took out five demons in the process. The only difference between this time and the last was that Shiva has just enough HP to tank Wave Function. Two demons were taken down, but victory was near.
41:15 The final close call of the battle, as the Masakados Magatama saves the day.
If you're wondering, I actually didn't use any DLC incenses on Nanashi's team. Almost every demon had Life Surge, Life Gain, and Enduring Soul. I used all 16 Armor Boost Kits I found during the game on Nanashi and gave him the Steel Essence accessory for Life Surge on top of that, which boosted his HP quite a bit.
As a final disclaimer, I did use a save state at the end of the first Stephen battle to retry this with ease. The entire point of this was to showcase the abilities of the other four Messiahs rather than Nanashi's team, so that battle wasn't relevant. - Ігри

Something I see often about Demi-Fiend is that he sees you as a normal encounter when you fight him as a boss. But seeing him get beaten and then seeing 'Demi-Fiend smirks' gives me the head canon that Demi-Fiend is finally finding a challenge. After all this time.
He evens sees stephan as a random encounter as well no concentrate and he only uses 2 moves
moments like these made me question why some people think turn based combat is boring
Most turn based combat IS boring especially things like final fantasy
Though the ff13 trilogy is fast paced and requires buffs. Its the most smt-like final fantasy
Because they use overlong animations. SMT is super fast

Only problem is its terrible pacing that gives you a 20 hour tutorial and the bandwagon has people not play it but just hate on it

It is indeed a hallway but once ypu get to the open world section and the combat system is fully available then you have a very fun, fast, rewarding, BUFF focused combat system that feels like smt in how it rewardd you and some regular enemies can wipe you but in 13 dying just lets you retry and return to the world
You have to sit through around 20 hours of nonsense to get to the good stuff

13-2 is a sequel but you dont REALLY need to play the first one
Its not actually a tutorial but might as well be as it teaches you things throughout the 20 hours while cutscenes and story happen
You can play 13-2 but it will spoil 13-1. It also has better gameplay with no bs long "tutorial"
If you dont want to get bored you can try 13-2 but going to 13 from 13-2 is like going from IVA to IV but imagine naraku being half the game and you dont get fusion till like 10 hours in

So, the best part about this is that it gives you an idea of how absurdly powerful Stephen is. After a full fight with the main heroes of the entire MegaTen series at their strongest, he isn't even fazed. He just decides that you are worthy and says: "Welp, my job here is done."
You don't even beat him, he just lets you get past him.

You know what's more impressive with watching this marathon of a fight? The fact that it shows WHY you had to fight Stephen with two parties, messiahs alone is a near impossibility, and I do think I've seen someone do this fight without using the messiahs as well. He's just THAT tough, really damn impressive with so many close calls!
The fact that, aside of the Hero, the Messiahs being at their most powerful who they can defeat Lucifer, YHVH and their most powerful followers with little help, they need to work together to stand against a transcended human like Stephen who can bend the laws of the universe.

I looked into this and it turns out that YHVH's second form and Stephen have scarily similar skillsets.

The whole idea behind Stephen is that, like his real life counterpart, while he does believe in gods, he rather want humanity to rely on themselves than letting the gods decide for them because we won't able to acknowledge our weaknesses and flaws if we keep relying on worship, especially if said gods never cared for us.

I've always wondered if this was possible. I was picturing a mod that would just outright remove Nanashi's team (and on the flipside, remove Crack Code from Steven's moveset because that move only makes sense in a double battle) but this works too
Crack Code could still work with a single team since he doesn’t start using it until around turn 10 or something, so Phys/Gun weaknesses could be open by then which would allow the team to hit him and use a Bead Chain on the same turn. Obviously that’s not something that he should be doing often or the battle wouldn’t be reasonable, but he doesn’t do it that often here anyway

Out of curiosity, did you go maxing out your stats or not?
As far as I remember, the only stat boosters I used were the 16 Armor Boost Kits that can be found in various Power Spot caches throughout the game. Those boost Nanashi's HP by 480, and the Life Surge accessory gives Nanashi 30% more HP on top of that. I may have also boosted Nanashi's Agility a small amount, but even if I did, that wouldn't matter at all. Stephen's attacks virtually never miss and the whole point of using the Trident to attack was to consistently hit Stephen regardless of Nanashi's Agility stat. None of the demons have their stats boosted and it wouldn't matter even if they did for this battle.

Could have used Salvation with Seraph, skip turn on Demonee-ho, attack with Nanashi?
Nope. In Apocalypse, Salvation only cures ailments if the user is smirking, which is essentially never. I only had three press turns to work with and I chose to use Magaon with Shiva, so I gambled that Seraph could hit him then use a Dekaja Stone with Demonee-ho. I was trying to protect the other team as much as possible so I didn't want to use a turn to heal Nanashi, but it really backfired.

Noticed the Hero has charge and was wondering why you never really used it - surely it'd give better damage and better MP conservation than using Mist Rush twice? Unless Charge only boosts one hit of Mist Rush or something.

To use it effectively you need to get extra press turns so that you can use the boost or he just removes it

@@jujs3311 he didn't beat Yhvh at his fullest. You could clearly see the fight wasn't in Yhvh's universe. So Yhvh wasn't at his strongest. Nahobino beat matter lucifer, who's infinitely above a full powered Yhvh. Demi fiend while severely holding back stalemates Nahobino pre-matter lucifer fight, who was full powered Yhvh tier for taking/destroying the heavenly throne.
Nahobino and demi fiend aren't "camperable" to Aleph. They sh*t on him and could kill him with a fart.
