That was the first thing I noticed about mine was that he was way smarter than I thought a cat could be. When I first brought him home as a kitten, he was trying to figure out the depth perception on the television. He would look at the screen, then he would look behind the TV, then he would look back at the screen. Then he would climb over the top of it, check the other side. The fact that he could see images on the TV, but there was nothing behind it, didn't make sense to him. I was very impressed

Any well socialized cats will do this, they're an incredibly smart animal.
Due to their reputation of being more stubborn than dogs, though, cats get treated as not being as smart. Because... you know, if they were they would be people pleaser, like dogs... right?

Leo came to my door one bitterly cold night. I'd seen him around and tried to talk to him but although he was pleasant he always stayed at least three feet from humans. But that night....he was starving and it was literally freezing outside. He nervously ate and I let him out. The next night...he ate the got on the sofa and slept for two days. He decided to stay with me. We moved a couple years later and some idiot opened my car door and leo freaked and ran. I looked for two days but I finally had to go on. I looked compulsively online for him and finally there he was at an adoption event. I called and drove to Texas to get him. After eleven months. He's lying beside me now with his paw on my knee.

My Normal tabby cat is far more Inquisitive than my main coon. He's also close to his size. I understand the view. But at times cats around us we see don't want to learn tricks because they don't want inn on the time. Plus easier as a kitten. They want to do theirs. My MCs arent overly clingy, arent demanding of attention, but will brush up against me, or even jump in my lap if Im not in the greatest spirits. On many occasions, I talk to them, they talk back. 25 years ago I got a ginger kitten from a shelter. It is now looking like he was a maine coon or cross. I have only considered this over the last few years as I learned about maine coons. While he was a larger cat he wasnt very large, but did have tufted ears, a square big head, tufts under his paws, and a long coat that looked quite like a lions mane around the head.
In retrospect he acted like a dog. He wasn't interested in hunting, and could walk pass feeding birds in the back yard. He didnt care, and neither did the birds. Contrast with my other cat, the birds would scatter on sight.
He liked to be in each room where I was.He would find a high point and sit majestically. He wasnt overly affectionate, but always friendly. Never aggressive. He didnt like to sleep on the bed, or indeed get on it. He would sit on the nightstand.
One day i woke and he was on the bed, sitting right by my head. I said hello and gave him a pat which he enjoyed. I got up to go to the bathroom, when I came back he was not there, and I never saw him again.
    He was 21.

We got a cat that was returned to the shelter twice and the last time there was lot of yelling. He was described as a Maine Coon cross but he exhibits ALL of the features of an MC and weighs in at 16lbs. He was hiding at the shelter in his cage so I sat by him with my hand in the cage with the door open. The girls at the shelter figured he was so traumatized that he was not adoptable. However eventually he came out from his hide and sniffed at my hand and let me pet him. Blew the girls away. I took him home and he hid for the first week but now after a couple of years of just letting him be a cat in a big old house with a front and backyard he is such a happy kitty. He is a super smart cat, very well behaved and such a gentleman. We get lots of trills and headbumps but I have to say a 16lb cat with the zoomies is something to behold. We absolutely adore him and he is never going to be returned. By far the smartest cat we have ever had and he is so handsome. He is black too so that is sometimes not good for adoption. We just cant imagine life without our Maine Coon Buddy. We definitely came out ahead in this deal and bonus is he is an excellent hunter. Mice used to run free in the place but he has thinned out the population considerably in the house and outside. Hunting is his favorite thing to do but oddly he is not really concerned with birds, just mice. He leaves us treats all the time.

I had a longhair female "ordinary" outdoor cat who weighed fully twelve pounds on a vet's scale - and she was not overweight. My vet told me she was the largest female cat she'd ever seen. She was larger than any of the local tomcats, which probably explained why they seldom came into her yard. She could and did whip any of them who dared intrude into her territory.
I named her Momcat because she had four adult kittens living with her when I moved in to the apartment.

We rescued a neighborhood cat that had basically moved onto my front porch this spring. she was super skinny & sick. You could feel her ribs and she was still over 8 lbs. We took her to the vet, and got her healthy. I'm not 100% sure but she fits most of the descriptions of a Maine coon. She was walking on a harness/leash with me after about two weeks of training. She already knows how to sit and fetch. If she goes outside I say "go home" and she runs to the back door. She's so smart and sweet. I keep saying she's like a dog. :D

Many years ago, (mid 1980’s) I was given a former show cat Maine Coone. His name was Thomas Jefferson. I never knew the kennel’s name.
I was told that the cat was going to be “put down” if nobody wanted him. He pointed out of the world of show cats as a champion of the breed and was considered surplus.
He’d been neutered and his paperwork was burned by his owners. He arrived in a box before I got home. My wife opened the door and she said a large furry blur ran under the couch and wouldn’t come out.
According to the vet I took him to, TJ had been abused by a previous owner, which explained his fear of people, hats, boots and brooms.
The litter box getting used and his food vanishing at night was the only indication that there was a cat in the house at all. This went on for about a week or so.
I hit on the idea of getting a catnip toy to try to gain some trust from the cat whom we began to call TJ. TJ used his amazing multi fingered hands to to grab the catnip toy, rip it open and shove his face in it. Within minutes, TJ was sprawled across the floor and we saw the enormous size of our new cat.
In the weeks that followed, TJ learned to trust us and the welding gloves were no longer needed. One day, TJ darted out the back door into the yard. But, he didn’t run away. In the years that followed, TJ stunned the neighborhood by walking on a lead. Many people thought he was some kind of exotic dog.
He was an enormous 35 pound bag of bones when he arrived. Within a couple of months, he’d gained his full weight back. At 56 pounds, TJ was as big as most family’s dogs.
At least 12 of TJ’s 15 years of life were peaceful and filled with love and toys. I miss my TJ. He was a great friend.

"Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition that causes the muscular walls of a cat’s heart to thicken, decreasing the heart’s efficiency and sometimes creating symptoms in other parts of the body. Although the cause of HCM has not been clearly identified, the fact that the condition is more prevalent in certain breeds (including Maine Coon, Ragdoll, British Shorthair, Sphynx, Chartreux and Persian cats) and that mutations of several cardiac (heart) genes have been identified in some cats with this disease suggests that genetics plays a role. "

Good video. I miss my Toby. He was a grey and white Maine Coon and just a beautiful cat. Very lovable and would lay on his back and fall asleep like that. He was my shadow and fallowed me everywhere for 14 years. I was so heart broke when he passed away. He had developed cancer. He had a thyroid issue and my Vet noticed a little tiny bump on his cheek. After a couple weeks of a strong antibiotic the bump that was so small, misquito bite size, was still there. My Vet wrote nicest 2 page letter to me after Toby passed away. Now I have a regular cat who, like toby, is very lovable. She is short haired calico tiger with huge 7 toed feet, that was dropped in mid winter. She was starving when she showed up with 2 others that were kittens and not hers. I also took in one of them and they were wild. I still can not pick that cat up. I can pet her a little if she lets me. Took me 2 years just to get that one to step inside my house door in the winter. For 2 yrs I felt so guilty because she was outside in nasty below 0 weather looking all day threw my sliding glass door. All I could do was keep feeding her. The 3rd cat I dont no what happened to it. It did not come around as much and acted more wild and independant and just stopped coming. But 2 cats now have a warm home.

I usually shear his coat down to just under 1" in the hot summer months to make him more comfy and control matting. He had a heightened sense of alertness which makes him afraid of everything. He is very friendly and quiet though and loves to be pet and groomed. He does not mind getting wet and can be bathed without much of a fuss. @@weaksignal8009 Norwegians were used on ships alot as raters as they were large, water resistant, and got on well with people.
One of the 3 popular Origin stories for the Maine Coon says that a ship captain named Coon would pull into a port in Maine each year for trading and to let the crew have a few days R&R in the town.
As the crew departed the ship so too did a number of the cats.
After about a decade locals started noticing the local cat population had changed and were now bigger and fluffier. The breed was then named the Maine coon due to the Captain.
No one actually knows how Maine Coons came about, this is just the most popular story behind it. There is a very good chance it's all BS other than the part of them having connections with Norwegians and Siberians.

When I bathe, he is laying right next to the tub. But when I sleep this is where he gets even sweeter: If I am on my back he is sleeping at my feet. I turn on my left side then he is cuddling right near my face. Then when I turn back on my back then he is sleeping at the top of my head. Then when I turn on my right side he's right back at my face. Then when I turn back onto my back he goes straight to my feet. He loves to serenade while I am cooking and washing dishes. He is very calming and comes to me when I am crying and begins to purr. That calms me down the best. He knows when my blood sugar is dropping to low while I am sleeping and will wake me up so that I can test my blood and get something to eat. He has been certified as a service cat and is allowed to travel with me if I am flying. But the best thing of all is his sweetness. Everyone who meets him wants him as their own. But he is my best pal and I am crazy about him. And the tattoo that I have of him proves it!

She never meant to be " breeder" but there was a one cat that prowled the streets 100% Male maine coon that would get in through dog door and impregnate her cats. She wound up with so many kittens she couldnt handle it. My 4 yr old is 18.2 lbs and still growing. My " baby" is two and 12lbs. I refused polydactyl before I had made decision to take on 2. Shelters call any longhaired domestic cat a MCO or MCO mix. Certified breeders may be expensive but they test their cats for diseases, carefully choosing which cats to breed to avoid those diseases, they provide lifelong help to buyer, if cats need to be rehomed they take care of it... There is so much more to breeding than mating two cats of the same breed. They pay attention to genetics, blood types, colors, ancestors. The price reflects all that. I bet your friend done neither.

I had two sister cats that were given to me as kittens who were barn cats. Apparently one parent was a Maine coon and the other parent was a black and white tabby. One is a black and white tuxedo cat while her sister is (was) a fluffy Maine coon with the brown tortoise fur and a white apron on her neck and paws. They looked nothing alike. However the Maine coon one had the body structure of a tabby with the fluffy fur of a Maine coon. We lost the Maine coon a year or so ago at 19 years old and her tuxedo sister is still with us at almost 21 years old. They both crave(d) attention and have never shown any aggression. Fluff balls of pure love! Oh, and I actually live in Maine.

I got my maine coon from the humane society, she was kept in a tiny crate since she was a kitten and then left behind when the ppl moved, she so small(12 lbs, so not too much smaller) even tho shes a purebred Maine coon. She LOVES the snow and being outside, she doesn't even need a leash, she comes when called, even tho we changed her name. I think she associates her old name with her traumatic past. Shes is so much better now!! And she looooves belly rubs🥰🥰🥰

One came to my back porch blind and starving.. but you couldn't tell. Because she was so big and had so much fur she appeared normal sized.
Food and love returned her eyesight thankfully. My other two cats accepted her at first.. but now that she has gotten twice the size of even my tom, they need extra assurance that they are not going to get usurped by this interloper. I had been thinking of adopting or raising a Maine Coon for months before this one adopted me.
I don't know where she came from or how she came to such misfortune.. but it seems we both got our wishes granted.
I sought out this video just to assure myself that she was indeed a Maine Coon. She is a torty and (except for ear tips) every other description you gave. Thank you.

@Bryce Kleinschmidt, He weighed 14lbs the last time he got on the scale (he weighs himself lol) but that was almost a year ago but I believe he is close to 17lbs right now. He dwarfs my other cat and likes to rough house with our dogs, a golden retriever mix and a pitbulls mix.

@Bryce Kleinschmidt, Well as long as he is getting plenty of the vital nutrients and such he should be in good shape. They usually stop growing after 2 years and mine just turned 2 back in May so he shouldn’t be getting any bigger.

I got a cat at a animal shelter, they said "oh he's about three, full grown, and a lover" they were wrong when I got him he was about 9 lbs, much like they said here they continue to grow, I still have no idea exactly how old he is, but somewhere between 6 and 8 most likely... he is 22 lbs, he is overweight, but only 1-2 lbs. He can easily stand on his hind legs and see up onto my counter with sits 3 ft in height... he is a cuddle monster, and he is absolutely one of the best dogs I have ever had, like top 2 easily... He is highly intelligent, he knows his name, comes when he is called knows how to sit, lay down, off and out... tbh never really tried to teach him more he learned sit and lay down when I was teaching my service dog basic obedience. I do live in 1000sq ft apartment it has a small 10x10 back yard that he loves to go out into and roll around in... It's also hilarious when feral cats jump into our back yard... because he is so much larger than them and when they see him the terror is evident in them... I have seen cats strike him in the face and he doesn't even flinch... Once saw him sit down after being struck as he watched the other cat try to figure out what to do, the moment it looked away he grabbed ahold of it and went to town with his back legs, the cat escaped physically unharmed, from what I can tell he didn't use his claws at all because I checked them for blood and fur afterwards... the cats psychological wounds will never fully heal though we have lived here long enough that no cat now enters our back yard, there is an "alpha" cat that tried a few times to take Paco on based on the fact Paco never had a scratch on him and the amount of screaming we would sometimes hear that other cat never won, and has since stopped trying

I got a kitten from a friend of a friend...turns out he was a maine coon mix..now at almost 9 months old, he is very long, lean and extremely muscled at 14lbs. He loves his baths, yawns at claw trimmings and has been trained to sit, stay shake left or right, roll over,
The only thing he had trouble with is not to treat my 4lb. Yorkie like a moving target.

And smart. She knew when she got treats she only got 3 each session, so by the time #3 came out of its container, she went all grumpy cat. As mom said, that cat CA count!
