  • So are we (those with OCPD) better off, or are we worse off now? A C0VID 19 mental health response. Episode 033
So you’d think having a personality disorder would automatically indicate that a global crisis would cause a person to really go off the deep end. But OCPD isn’t any old personality disorder. Occasionally it comes with benefits, such as feeling like we can tell everyone “I told you so”. But the good times don’t last forever and eventually the reality of the situation hits and we are left confronting our worst traits in the bathroom mirror at home. This video was produced knowing that we have particular challenges we are going to have to face going forward, and that we’ll need to be reminded of what tools are in are toolbox and which ones are best for this project.

I am SO glad to have you in my virtual life! Truly. OCPD has such a limited online (or really anywhere) presence. I appreciate you and your time, your insights and your ethics. Your heart is in the right place, it is obvious you care, and are empathetic toward each of our struggles and journey. It’s a beautiful thing to watch and be part of. Listening to you and viewing the community comments motivates me to keep on keeping on. 15 minutes ago I was feeling overwhelmed, cranky and spiraling. Now My mood is lifted, I am noticing the big picture, giving myself positive self talk and seeing light and new possibility. Who am I? Lol. Well, I am just downright amazed. In this moment I am happy and content. Mmmm. 🙏🌸🦋❤️

For me it’s been the procrastination that’s harder to avoid and the excessive focus on my apartment being perfect. Also the exhaustion from the activism that came out during the pandemic.

NGL, I LOVE people staying away from me. I have a bubble the size of a swimming pool and now it's socially acceptable to tell people to back off. On the other hand, cbt is harder to do when your homework is getting closer to people. I feel like I need a person who is an authority on social conventions to tell me what I should be striving for. I'm having the hardest time rn figuring out what concessions I should make to get to a more standard level of (whatever) and what is just slacking or shouldn't slip.

Kyra Todd I think that's what separates a good therapist from a great therapist. It's important to give yourself time. When you're mentally able, you will be able to discern these things on your own. Don't try and force it, but do have it as a goal that you keep in mind. I know all too well the struggle with deciding which concessions are worth it and which concessions are social norms. It doesn't sound like you need an authority, because there are no authorities. You're just working towards a balanced life and as long as you keep working, you will get there. Thank you for sharing what you're going through. It. helps others as well when they read comments such as yours.

I hate the fact that I relate to your struggles, and I hate the fact you've been having these struggles as well. That being said, you've expressed my feelings better than I'd be able to, and this clarity brings me a lot of relief. I hope you're doing as well as possible, and thanks for the great (and helpful) content!

Lillian Watson you expressed how I feel every time someone leaves a comment. It's disheartening to hear about others struggles, but having other people to relate to somehow makes things a little easier. Thank you for the encouraging words and I hope you're doing as well as possible during these tricky times. And thanks for watching!

Well, to start I am now even more organized. Which brings a question do you have a favorite storage/organization bin, container, box & so on? Mine tends to be the Plano fishing tackle box model 1374. At a glance one might think I love to fish, which can be fun but its not as therapeutic as having things organized in size and type order and labeled if needed.
COVID-19 is stressful, mostly people not being respectful of space, and using a proper face covers. But I really enjoy the limiting of people in the store even if I have to wait outside and seeing someone wipe down my shopping basket before it is passed to me where I wipe it down again, and when feeling extreme, like always I use the sanitary wipes as a sort of moist handle covering.
    Take Care.

Lars Londian whether it is or not, I find the humor in all of the advantages having OCPD in a COVID-world offers. There are a lot of practices now that bring relief to symptoms I no longer have, but for the few that I cling on to, the new precautions have gone a long way to easing those feelings.
I try to focus less on lists and organizing than I used to. I'm working away from the disorder, not towards it. But as someone that leads a nomadic lifestyle, I can't really get away from the organizational lifestyle. I live out of suitcases primarily, so having the exact size case or the exact size item or tool is crucial. Especially when it comes to weight. I don't have a particular item I can recommend for everyday life. But back in the day I used to use different styles of toolboxes. I liked them aesthetically and they had all different sized compartments.
Thanks for the comment and for watching. Take care!

@@OCPD_support I appreciate your point of view, I have not really ever been a big suitcase person but I am an avid backpacker, and truly understand the size and weight restraints. Some packs have many pockets some don't, the ones that don't I use smaller bags within the pack to help keep things where I want them multi colored pouches are great too.
I have been really enjoying your channel and the content your doing a great job and I'll be sticking around.

Thanks for the video. I have tried so hard to avoid politics because I feel like I need to get into those verbal fights as well and prove I am right. Its so hard these days with so many people (including my own sister) pushing BS conspiracy theories. It's making me so irritable. On another note, it's kind of depressing that after others lived my antisocial lifestyle for a month, they went crazy.

    • @OCPD_support
      @OCPD_support  4 роки тому +1

Beth Perry I do well these days avoiding politics. But it's a lot of work. As for people becoming depressed under these circumstances, I had someone respond to me with similar thoughts. But those that like antisocial lives are the outliers. As a species we are very community focused and social. So it's not surprising at all that we're already seeing an increase in suicides. Those that like solitude should try to at least find some joy in the fact that there lifestyle is now considered the "norm". But I do understand your frustration.

Yea, this pandemic feels like regular, sad life for me. I don't, like, go out a lot. I don't wanna say I'm antisocial, but I guess it's true to an extent. Idk how to explain it, I guess - I just like hanging out with people when I want to, and the rest is just texting/interacting digitally. If I had literally no friends at all I'd probably go crazy. I'm just a homebody, and idk if I have OCPD or not 😭

@@OCPD_support Okay, thank you so much, and sorry for the long post. I was looking up stuff on OCPD, and I found a forum pretty much dedicated to the discussion of OCPD, helping people with it, etc. I found out quickly that, unfortunately, looking up OCPD pretty much just gets you people complaining about it in some way instead of support. I found a post about someone asking if they should try to salvage their marriage with their OCPD husband. I looked through the responses and found a very harrowing one. They basically said to just give up because it wasn't going to get better, and that most OCPD people can't seem to get better and never change or even realize they're wrong. I was thinking that maybe this was just a specific post, but they made another post similar to this about someone's grandfather who they said was always going to be the way that he was and would never change. They were very somber about, and it seemed like it came from a place of experience/hurt. I know you have a videos up about managing relationships with people who have OCPD, but I can't bear to look at them now. Do you think people most with OCPD can't change? I know it sounds ridiculous, but I'd just like your opinion. It also doesn't help that people seem to box everyone with OCPD together, because I'm pretty sure there's different forms of it, and mine doesn't really seem to manifest in directly controlling people - but everyone with OCPD seems to have that image thrown on them.

    • @OCPD_support

@@coconut_juice no sorry necessary. I'm happy to respond to your comment.
It's very unfortunate that you had to stumble across the online information that you did. I'm currently in the middle of building a forum on OCPD.org and it will be moderated in a much healthier way.
However, I believe that you absolutely have what it takes to make the improvements you'd like to make for yourself. Ignore anyone or anything that says you can't change. You've already won two big battles. You understand that what you're suffering from is OCPD and you want to change. You're ahead of more than 99% of people with OCPD. That's a great start. And although it will be a lot of work, you can lead a happy and healthy life over time. You really can!
