Great review..... gonna have to get me one of those. I have been an L2000 guy for a long time but I think I personally prefer the sound of the M series basses.
Love the intro... John Coltrane... Ed you don't know it yet but you are my bass teacher 😂 first I started with the walking bass books and now reggae bass... All great lessons! Thank you so much for the music!
@@georgealexander2272 G&L sucks???!? Wow, ok how long have you been playing? Maybe get your ears checked while you're busy drinking the Sire koolaid bruh... Wow
Great video, and thank you for actually doing a demo with a pick, although I would have liked you to do something a bit louder that shows off more of the range. Still, one of the best demos on YT. I'm considering buying a new bass, and the M-2000 is currently at the top of my list.
So Ed when you say the M2500 pickups are a little tamer so the preamp really does the work does that allow to M to drive and cut as well as the L? I love the tone sounds a little beefier in the low and low mids. Thank you so much for a fantastic review. I have played and L Tribute and have an opportunity for a good price on a USA M. Very tempting.
Great review, as always. I own a G&L L2500. Love it! However, during live gigs I get these unpleasant pop sounds when I hit the strings hard. I feel its because the pickups are wired hot the preamp is clipping. Had the preamp changed to another stock version, no luck again! Any idea what the issue could be? However, for recordings its totally fine. Issue is only when there is a PA involved!
Hey Ed. Just read your review in BP mag on the Carvin PB5. Are you planning on doing a "Bass Whisperer" review on this one as well? By the way, I owned a G&L M-2500 for a short period of time. Great bass!
So they just made their version of a Lakland? Don't get me wrong that's a hell of a bass and if I had an opportunity and the funds to buy a G&L I would, because of that bridge.
Ed,does it kind of eliminate maybe ,that thing in the back of your mind that Leo and George had something to do with this new model. Maybe a little bit .Great review as usual .Just picked up one of your DVD's .5 star review for you buddy. I have to say ,your dvd is very ,I don't know user friendly, easy to follow for all age groups and i'm glad I bought it. Thank you
I don't live anywhere near where they have this bass or any G&L to actually play. How comfortable is the medium C neck? Is it similar to the Fender Jazz? I am very used to asymmetrical necks(MTD) but this bass really sounds great for the price.
I'm planning to get one of these in the near future, but I'd really like to modify the blend knob with a 3 way selector switch. My question is, is it possible to do that and still maintain the wiring in parallel with both pick ups or would it change completely? just curious, thanks.
Ed, I just received my M-2000 and am loving it - thanks for such a solid review. But I'm not so much loving the stock D'ad strings. What have been your favorites on the M series? I've used DR Fatbeams on my other basses for years, but have read a lot about G&L's MFD humbuckers liking nickel vs. ss. Your thoughts? Thanks!
Well, I haven't settled on a clear favorite... Fatbeams would work nice, it all depends on what you're looking for. I don't remember what strings were on this bass when I demoed it.
I think I was using Dean Markley Helix Stainless on the bass. They are taper wound, but because the bass strings through the body, the taper doesn't go over the bridge. Still... they've been my go to string on both the L and M 2500.
Same as all G&L 5 strings. 17mm spacing at the bridge, 1&3/4" at the nut - narrower than Fender. I personally love these dimensions, just right for me.
Yeah, I usually use the LT5 SS set... but I wanted to restring them both fresh for the shoot and only had the Mediums... a little heavier, which kind of mess up my setup - hence the clack stuff on the neck. I really like the string, but keep in mind they are tapered - but not on a through the body G&L... the taper doesn't reach the saddle.
Ed I really need your advice oh great bass whisperer. I have saved up enough to buy my first ever serious professional bass (I'm 16), a brand new MMSR4 HH. Should I go for the Stingray or would you suggest anything better?
The Stingray is a great axe, a classic sound. There are many good reasons to play one. But the main thing is deciding what kind of sound you want. There are just as many reasons to get a P bass... but is it the sound you want. Then... how does it feel? Have you tried a lot of different basses? Does one feel better than the other? You need to try things first... but - a Stingray is a great bass, you can't go wrong with it... it just may not be the sound you want - you are the only one that can answer that.
This is more user friendly than the L series- most people don’t even understand the preamp/controls work on them. This is a plug and play bass without the nose of the L
Great bass! but there´s an extra 0 in the model name at the beginning of the video! I think a lot of the tone is in your fingers Ed, and i mean yours, not my fingers lol, but no doubt of the quality and versatility of this bass.
Lots of people say the "front" and "rear" pickup, because the neck pickup is in front of the bridge pickup, which is in the back by the bridge, people say as such.
Yeah... I get your point, but... you know what I'm talking about, particularly when I demonstrate it. Language is a living, breathing thing. We all use alternative choices to describe things... I feel the same way about people calling a m7b5 chord "half diminished."
Bass Whisperer TV Ha, I am not going to die on this hill. I know this usage is common and it's been around for a long time. I just can't ever keep it straight.
Charles Coleman I mean, the neck pickup (at least in my understanding) is just that: by the neck. Look at a Peavey T-40 for what I'd consider a real neck pickup. The "front" pickup on this bass is more of a middle (p-bass area) pickup, but it is in front of a bridge pickup.
Although it probably has more to do with the strings than the basses themselves, I didn't care for either one; too buzzy/grindy for me. I'd probably like the way they'd sound in the mix better than the way they sound soloed.
I've had my M2500 for 5 years now and I love it.
One of the best B strings I've ever heard
Great review, definitely helps both existing L owners like me and also prospective G&L buyers. Keep up the good work Ed :)
Love the L2500 and I am sure I would love the M2500, in part, because of the midrange, the midrange, the midrange. ;)
Great demo, thanks!
I love your videos, Ed! Great work, thanks for whispering bass!

you can just tell Leo Fender played a part in starting G&L... that bass is awesome :D
I had no intention of buying an M, but I am happy to have one on order to add to my collection. Thanks, Ed.
Enjoy it!
Hi sir. How much the bass price for used?
L vs. M! Cannot wait
love his jazz phrasing!
I bought a new M 2000 after this video convinced me it was what I was looking for. it is a wonderful rarely known G&L model. what he said^
joethebar1 gnl is sucks.. I dissapointed when iam buying it.. I prefer sire v7 or fender jazz bass
Are you out of your mind? G&Ls put Fender to shame! And a Sire? Did you buy a Tribute model?

Tonally, how does the M-2500 compare to the soapbar pickup Sadowsky bass? I noticed that both have soapbar pickups in pretty much the same location.
I would like to know that as well.

Try Beano. ;)

This neck is definitely wider and flatter than G&L's 5 string jazz bass. It's more like a Sadowsky neck.
Sounds like you were playing the theme song to that sitcom Northern Exposure...? at 3:00
hehe "Resolution" on the background music. Sweet!
Yes... e.g. ua-cam.com/video/O6pSffe4k60/v-deo.html

You should do a video on that carvin pb5 you have there!!!

Nicely done. Maybe I pulled the trigger too soon on the L-2500.
Nah... buy another one... they're cheap! (Relatively speaking)
They're scarce. The ones I've seen online are over 9.5 lbs. Can't find one in weight range of yours.
In my opinion, the L-2500 is much better, although to each their own

Using the MXR Bass Octave on the fingering solo near the end?

Great review Ed. Just curious, what kind of camera do you use for your videos?
So....the G&L M-2500 or the Carvin PB5? Pros/Cons/Differences...
And do they offer, and has anyone tried, a fretless version of either?
Hi Ed. Sounds amazing! Do you have any idea what the suggested string gauge is?

Sick interpretation of Resolution by John Coltrane
Will someone please tell me what finish that is on that beauty
Fuller MG It's Cherryburst over ash.
How is the neck width? is it wide like a fender 5? Is it more like a Musicman? How is the neck?

No
more beef than the L-series
