some people try to state that Cherubini's Requiem is better than Mozart's or Mozart's is better, but c'mon, this is not a competition. they were made in distinct eras, distinct countries and with different contexts, each one of them are beautiful in their own way. I love this Requiem and I love Mozart's Requiem as much. let's just appreciate both music ✨❤️
The difference is that the Mozart' s Requiem has not been completed by Maestro. The movements composed with his hand are divinal, the rest depends on how close they imitate the oiginal ideas of the Mozart.
As a child growing up with a father who was a musician, I heard the name Luigi among other family members who were born and raised on the other side of the world. My father Richard Cherubini became recognized for being a world class piano rebuilder as well as a musician. Rich Cherubini played jazz starting with the upright bass. To this day, almost every one of us can at least play a tune or two on something or other. So wonderful to be able to hear my great great Grandfather's music. And I thought I was good banging on the drums. Ha!
Michael Cherubini i really love this requiem too, and I’m proud to say that he was also my great great grandfather, and that I’m following his steps and about to pursue a music career in Viola Performance
Thanks to your great great Grandfather I had the privilege of being able to sing in the Soprano section of the Kapiti Chorale in New Zealand when it was performed. I love it so much.
The Oklahoma State philharmonic is slated to play this piece with choir in a month’s time. I’ll be playing viola on it. Your ancestor composed a marvelous piece. I wish you the best of luck with your own viola studies!

We were rehearsing this wonderful piece for our Easter concert (Ryde Chorus, Isle of Wight, under the excellent leadership of Philip Fryer.) Sadly, due to the the COVID-10 pandemic we were unable to perform it. We hope to do so in the future. To keep our spirits (and our voices) up, we listen to this very often and sing along with it, normally twice over at a sitting. I agree with with a previous comment that Luigi Cherubini is right up there with the masters. Wonderful music.
This is a wonderful Requiem written by Cherubini! Lovers of this concert please also check the same Requiem by Studenten koor en Orkest conducted by Elbert Besavis. It is simply outstanding! Not that this performance is bad. Beethoven who never wrote a Requiem said "If I was to write a Requiem, Cherubini would be my only model!". Further Beethoven requested that it be played at his funeral! Schumann deemed it "without equal in the world!". My hairs stand just listening to this remarkable Requiem by Cherubini which is second to none!
This sound work is very clearly in line with the Magisterium of Church in a spirit of continuity with tradition and concern for evangelization in a world without god
I discovered this piece a few years ago. That was such precious discovery. Such a piece not sufficiently know as it should. After a while I read that among "fans" of Luigi Cherubini, there was a certain W.A. Mozart. Not surprising...
I can't escape the impression that Mutti didn't really enjoy this. He appears very perfunctory, emotionless, and robotic in his directing. 8 months after my comment here above I have come to the realization that it seems to be the common posture of Mutti
This music is so moving and irresistible, I can only describe it as the forbidden fruit. Full disclosure, I'm crazy for vocals especially within symphony's. Yes I'm a newcomer to this particular fantastic music, but my trajectory was always from vocalist music. This being one of my recent discoveries. Oddly enough, from "Endeavour". Although, this wasn't the first from "Endeavour", only the most recent.
The opening of this requiem is superb and unearthly. I like to enter Heaven this way to welcome me. The rest is magnificent too, it is Cherubini of course, at it's best.

Aside from the fact that the upload was done with the channels reversed, women should be on the left, men on the right, upper strings on the left and so on, add to that it is an outdoor concert, the audio is quite nice, a few too many microphones, but what the heck, whose counting? I do feel the balance between chorus and orchestra could have been a little better if the choir not been so dominant in the recording. I don't know the work, never got to record it, but my feeling is that the ensembles were in good hands and that this a very good performance with strong merits.
I agree about the balance of the choir versus orchestra. I find the choir dominates too much but appreciate the fact that I can understand most of the words. However, I prefer the better balanced, crisper and more intimate version of the Boston Baroque, director Martin Pearlman.
