  • A way to make control horns from plastic gift cards and install them on your foamboard control surfaces. These cards can be acquired (with no value on them) from some establishments that leave them out in the public space, like the host station or cash register. Borrow some at your own risk.

*What a great way to figure out the control horn size! Thank you for this one! I've had to use trial and error because every formula, other than this one, has not worked consistently.*
*Between you and Flite-Test ... My next build should be amazingly simple and a actually fly well.*

i just starting out, where do you get your push rods from?

@ceejayluke Pushrod material is one of the few things I still get a my local hobby shop. Find the right size (.047" is what I like) and just buy a bunch of it. It should be less than $1 for 3 feet of it. Some guys have used steel wire from hardware store for very short pushrod spans, but it can be flexible so be careful.

Great tutorial! I'm always looking for other ways to set this kind of stuff up... Quick questions: (forgive me if you've already answered these) What material or source are using for your pushrods? Where do you get your colored packing tape? Thanks again for sharing!

Isopropol alcohol will release hot glue from most surfaces too. The pure 100% de-natured alcohol works best if you can get it. You have some great ideas and a much better presentation style than most tutorials I've seen. Your videos are very professional. They are concise, yet still cover the material fully. Thanks for the good work.

+Hifin Sword Thanks for the post. I just over glued and broke some stuff on my first plane needed a way to fix my hot glue debacle. I used 70% Isopropyl and it worked pretty good :) I've never used denatured alcohol before so I don't have a comparison but Isopropyl got the job done. Thanks.

@MyGeekShowdotcom I use mainly .047" music wire (I believe it's actually piano strings) for pushrods, obtained from local hobby shop. It's so cheap it's hard not to just stock up once in awhile. Colored packing tape is from TapeBrothers dotcom. There are several other places online. Look for "carton/packing/sealing tape". Also RCGroups thread on "foamboard building university" I just started has some sources listed.

They are often a little tight so I have a little Z-bent piece of the wire that I use to drill out the control horn holes, using it kind of like an old fashioned brace and bit. A Dremel can work in the same way but be careful not to overly enlarge the hole. Good call on avoiding the small wire.

Ed, are using control horns with larger diameter holes on the servos? I'm using 9gr servos from hobby king but .047 music wire is too large to fit in the control horns included with the servos. I tried .032 which fits just fine but seems like it will bend or flex too easily under stress or fast control surface movement.

Yeah... that's a great solution! I've been waiting for a use for this stack of dead gift cards. And to think I've been BUYING control horns...:(
Ed, you make me feel so dumb sometimes! But I still love your techniques!

Searched HobbyKing extensively but can't find metal 'wire' for push rods, nor the adjustable adapter to accept the straight end of the push rod. Where have you guys been able to find these items ?

I found these on eBay using the search term "Metal RC Model Quick Connector Pushrod Linkage Stopper for Airplane"
and on Amazon by searching "Pushrod Linkage Stopper." As for HobbyKing they need to add additional keywords so their search tool can find items. This is not the first problem I've had with HobbyKing search.
