  • Here is one way to make hatches in foamboard tube and other fuselages. I made some discussion about magnetic latching but it's kind of more of an art and difficult to succinctly describe.

@roastedghost I have gotten the 1x1cm magnets from RCTimer and HobbyKing.

    Another elegant solution!
I do get curious as to WHY some of your Videos end, and then 5-8 minutes of dead space??

@inciteman Yes, exactly: "Reward for return" sticker with my contact info in case I crash far away.

a yardstick thats 48 inches, lol. great video though...

@mackenzierob1 Sorry to be a little wishy-washy on the exact magnet install. It's a little different every time for me, so hard to nail down a succinct technique. I do know the "bypass face-to-face" mounting is pretty secure though and I'm playing with the "edge-to-edge". What's your experience?

Put the battery as far forward as you can, but still be able to extract it. The easiest place to put the ESC is on the outside, but inside the upper surface of the fuselage is pretty good too, looks better, and slightly more protected in a crash. I would not put it directly in front of the battery in case of crash. The receiver should be easily accessed in any case. I like to just tuck it back into the fuselage and thread the antenna out of the fuselage just to keep it clear of the wires.

@vdubbub1986 It will definitely be a beginner build, and maybe a good second plane as far as piloting skills. There is no dihedral and the wing loading is a little higher than most true trainers.

Great videos. I have my foam cut and shaped and all the electronics bought for a Nube Tube. My next move is to cut the hatch. Any advice on how to lay out the battery, receiver and speed controller once the hatch is cut?

Whats that piece of paper with writing stuck on the hatch say? (at the end of you video) A lost n found sort of message?

    Why not use adhesive velcro?

Great video, Ed! Thanks... I learn something new with every one. I'm so excited! I have to go get some foam board now...!

    Hi!
I like your videos very much, I have a question about magnets. Do they disturb electrics inside the fuselage? I mean like batteries, motors, ESCs, or FPV transmitters. I do have some really strong magnets, and I could make very secure hatches with them, but I have some fears about this (especially the FPV gear, because on one of my planned planes the distance between the FPV TX and the magnets, is around 1", or even less).
    thanks

Tamás Szemadám It is possible but I have never noticed a problem with my applications. But I don't believe I've ever put a magnet very near FPV gear. I believe you are right to be cautious.

+Tamás Szemadám The only thing they'd really affect are memory chips in small circuit boards, like an ESC, Receiver, or camera. They may interfere with radio transmissions if they're too close to antennae, but 1-2 inches of distance should be sufficient. Just make sure they aren't sitting directly against, or right next to, wiring or circuitry.
