    I like this episode a lot; it's brilliant, thank you David👌 I don't even known how much "Do The Clam" &"Girl Happy" was so popular in Japan on Singers and Groups. It's absolutely Interesting to hear/watch all of the japanese Versions. How about the real ELVIS Movie in Japan?! Was it a Smash Hit at the Japan Cinemas back in 1965?! Thanx in advance ✌️

      I think the film was popular at the time, judging by the number of related records and movie programs around today. Shelly Fabares was also popular, so that was no doubt a big help too. Thanks a lot.

    Hi David, love the video. I have Learned something new today about Do The Clam. While on Facebook this morning. I came a cross this Los Indios Sings Presley. It has fabulous cover of Elvis from Fun In Acapulco. It is a Japanese release. Have you seen this album? Maybe you didn’t know about it. Like l guess the most of us collectors? Stay safe. Hi Ellie. Los Indios Sings Presley is a very collectible album purely for that great cover. There is another one - can't remember the performer(s) - that has a great photo of Elvis and Ann-Margret on the front. I think it's from the The Lady Loves Me scene in the movie. Also very sought after. Thanks, Ellie.

    A most interesting and informative video, David. “Girl Happy” is probably my favorite soundtrack and the movie is in my top 5 Elvis movie favorites.
    As for Florida, it definitely is a place where old folks go to retire, but the coastal towns/cities, such as Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, etc., are where college students go for Spring Break from classes, such as depicted in the film.

    Hi David thank you for that most fascinating discussion and clips regarding Girl Happy and Do the Clam . David did you know this film which I consider an Elvis classic with a wonderful soundtrack is a remake of the 1940 RKO film To Many Girls also quite a good Musical starring Richard Carlson Lucile Ball and Desi Arnaz . I really think from the Japanese clips you have shown Girl Happy and Do the Clam work well in Japanese many thanks David cheers Carl Australia.

      Judging by the number of used copies available, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a number one hit. It's at least as common as Devil in Disguise which I know for a fact got to number one. It's still hard to find data on the singles chart statistics in the '60s. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting, I saw this Japanese 45 last week, un played by the looks - £4. I thought this was Elvis' attempt at dance crazes, many of which were very popular in many countries. Not forgetting his others 'Do the Vega' and 'The Climb' by the Forte Four.
    All of which didn't really catch on. Many countries, had 60's groups covering hits of the day many were Beatles inspired. Love those others you speak of Duane Eddy especially. About three years ago he turned up at Regent Sound guitar shop, Denmark St. Think he was performing at The Palladium that week. He loves the Gretsch 6120 guitar my favourite rockabilly guitar.

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  Рік тому +1

      £4 is a good price. You'd pay more for that for it even in Japan. Yes, it was clearly an attempt to start a new dance craze but I guess "swim" songs must have seemed a bit out of date in 1965. That was a problem with putting such songs in the movies - they didn't come out until many months later. I saw quite a few famous faces when I worked in Denmark Street myself back in the late 1980s. Thanks for watching.

    The 60s movies and soundtracks are unfairly judged when taken in isolation. Put into context, Elvis’ output is superior in quality and performance to other artists making similar things at the time. Who knew that Do the Clam was a genre classic!

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  Рік тому

      Indeed. You can't compare them with what, say, the big British bands were doing at the time. It's like Elvis was in a parallel musical universe.

    Hi David great video I didn't think I would ever hear a cover of "Do The Clam"- very interesting as you know I have a soft spot for the movie soundtracks, funny story when I was having my jukebox serviced some years ago ( at that time it featured Elvis only ) the man spun a few records to test, just pressing random numbers " Moody Blue and "Hound Dog" played and then on comes "Do The Clam" the man stopped working and stood at the front of the juke till the record finished I thought here we go he's going to say what was that rubbish instead he said I quite like Elvis but I have never heard that song before the Bongo playing and bass are great and the Sax solo is fantastic! - so there you go you never can tell, although I must be honest I never liked the way the volume goes up and down on the track and can't stand the girl screaming in the background! ( The Carol Lombard Singers ) some nice singles there also, thanks for the video.

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  Рік тому

      Great story. I've always wondered what happened with the BVs at the end of the song. When the group sings "yeah yeah yeah" for the last time, their voices come in suddenly. The first split second seems clipped, as though it was badly recorded. I know what you mean about the girl singers. I quite enjoy them now, though, as they add to the fiun atmosphere. Thanks for watching.

    I'll never understand why the '80's girl group The Go Go's never covered the 60's Go Go's; I don't think there's ever been a case of a band being covered by a group of the same name.

    Hi Dave ,very interesting piece that a think ya right about RCA maybe missing a trick in not releasing do the clam in 64 ,a don’t blame RCA at all releasing this as the single they were trying to capitalise on the swim craze ,remember the single rock a hula baby 4 years earlier having twist special on the label in all that to capalise on chubby checkers twist craze ,although EL had a few records around that time in later that were twist material for me ,kissin cousins being a good example ,a think these mid sixties film sound track singles sound be judged in the context of the film and what was going on in the charts at the time ,but in ELs case they weren’t which was a bit unfair for me ref the USA and UK ,Japan seemed to love this sort of record ,it does surprise me a bit as the USA novelty records always done well a do think the mid sixties was a missed opportunity for EL record material wise although he was obligated ref the movies and a think it was the dawn of the singer song writer so maybe getting top quality material was a problem a don’t know,that changed in the late sixties for EL so maybe the movies were the priority in 65 ,a do still think the phenomenal success of blue Hawaii was still in the mind set of RCA ,great piece Dave ,take care tony

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  Рік тому

      Hi Tony. Yes, I think the "Twist Special" probably seemed a bit outdated when it appeared in 1961, a full year after Chubby Checker's version (and even that wasn't the original). Same with Do the Clam although I enjoy it. It's a fun listen. The extra backing vocalists used to annoy me when I was younger but I enjoy them now. I think you're right about the mid-60s. He was tied to the movie contracts and Parker was never keen to let Elvis into the studio to do regular recordings while there were soundtrack albums to sell. Cheers, Tony.

    Great to see the Japanese performers of that era copying Elvis. Same thing happened when the Beatles performed their 20 minute live show ib Australia.
