Should a strike actually occur, I'm guessing the holiday shopping will not be impacted greatly, as most merchandise has already been shipped and in country. SOME certain foods, and what we get from Europe will result in shortages. We can see these things as early as one week in such a strike. Once the word gets out, panic buying will escalate that time frame. Will our government intervene before such? Probably, but this is an election year! On top of this, Israel is in the news!
When times are tough no one cares about a flat screen TV or the latest iPhone. This is about important goods. You can't store bananas forever. You can refrigerate meat for a long time but that costs. Also, grain and other produce are not localized, so that has to be shipped to cities and towns. Then you would say, "hey just let the truckers ship the good already here". True, but trucking companies are not going to waste fuel with just one or two commodities and not have volume of shipments to pay their workers. The logistics of freight is not so simple my friend.
