    I love the way you organized it. With my 2nd and 3rd graders, I would rotate so that writing chapters weren't simultaneous so that I could fairly teach each one. I might combine like this next year. Thank you for sharing!

      That’s a great idea too, especially if they’re far apart in ages and you can’t combine them

    Do you feel that the grammar in the English 6 was repetitive from what your daughter already learned in level 5 with Good and the Beautiful? We are going to be switching from The Good and the Beautiful to BJU next month. We are currently using IEW for writing

      This is the only edition for 6th grade and when I purchased 4th grade last year that was the only edition available. Apparently the newer edition of 4th grade just came out this school year, but level 6 is still the same

    Such a great idea to have organised both levels to work with both your children.
    I am looking at BJU 6 reading. My just 11 year old is doing the Sonlight la , and I’d say his comprehension isn’t strong, I feel I need to help him more on this. How is grade 6 reading going? Is it very hard or advanced? Wondering if to go down to 5.

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  10 місяців тому +1

      I think it depends on your child. We don’t have the readers but I’m sure they are comparable to Sonlight. You could go down a level to help with ease and comprehension and build confidence. On the other hand, some children are very sensitive to the fact that the reading or whatever it may be is a grade “below” them. If you’re looking for comprehension, maybe consider the reading comprehension workbooks? Where you read a page and then answer like 5 questions. It keeps the reading short so it’s easier to comprehend and retain the information

      Wanted to share that we switched from TGTB to BJU this year for my 5th grader. She had only ever used TGTB for LA, but I quickly realized we needed something more, specifically for writing. BJU really breaks down the writing process and emphasizes it with each lesson in a way that makes sense. We also didn’t like that TGTB was so specific about what they wanted the student to write about, and it was often not something my child had any interest in writing about. BJU gives a lot of flexibility with choosing topics and that has been so much better. Just know that BJU English does not include spelling, geography, and art like TGTB does, so you would want separate curriculum for those things if you wanted to incorporate them.

    • @Analysemarie
      @Analysemarie 10 місяців тому

      I’d love a video like that too!! We are currently using level 5 in TGTB but I definitely feel like it needs a little more for the writing portion.

    With the levels being so similar, at least with the writing topics, do you think it’s redundant to continue using the next level up year after year? We’re using English 4 currently for my 5th grader who needed a lot of help getting “caught up” with writing after struggling with other curriculum. It’s working great. But I know level 5, and then 6, will touch on a lot of the same writing content. I’m hoping it gives enough “advanced” information and expectations to continue using. Also looking at using the newer 3rd edition because I know there have been some updates that might set it apart even more (and be more relevant to current technology, etc).

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  10 місяців тому +1

      That will depend on the child, but I think practice helps! There are only so many different genres of writing before they overlap and repeat. There are curriculum that do the same thing over and over for the full year. So I think this one does give a bit of variety

    I’m so torn on what to do.
    My 1st grade grandson loves Abeka Math and wants to continue next year but he really dislikes the language arts and wants to do something different. He doesn’t like all the writing.
    Do you feel like 2nd grade BJU does as much writing in LA as Abeka?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  10 місяців тому +1

      I honestly can’t remember much from Abeka 2nd grade 🙈 it’s been like 4 years. And I don’t do BJU for my 2nd grader so I couldn’t comment on that either. I will say, I think I remember Abeka having to write a lot but we can of course tweak the curriculum to fit our children’s needs. In my opinion (take it for what’s it’s worth), 2nd graders don’t really need to be writing a lot. They’re barely learning to read and spell and that is a lot of work for them. Writing uses a whole new skill set! I’m very laid back when it comes to writing for the early elementary years
