SAM CANE RETIREMENT | NEXT ALL BLACK SKIPPER?

- Опубліковано 12 тра 2024
- Sam Cane has announced his intention to retire from international rugby at the end of this year to pursue opportunities in Japan leaving the question: who will the next All Black Captain be? And what will the New Zealand back row look like moving forward?
- Спорт
it must be extremely difficult for Sam after getting sent off in the final, I wish him well!
As a Bok supporter I always thought Sam was an absolute savage on the field. And a real gentleman off the pitch. And he didn't deserve that red card in the WC final. Salute to an incredible test captain.
Red card was accurate for the laws. If he got hate a lot of hate for it. Not that. I suspect he gave himself more hate than anyone else could. Guys awesome and I felt for him
Tell that to Pat Lambie.
@@daggaboomIf that was accurate to the laws, then there were tons of other stuff Wayne Barnes missed that could have been called for. Far too inconsistent
@@naisyjohns show me a ref that’s consistent with the laws? And it wasn’t Wayne Barnes that made the decision
@@daggaboom Nigel Owens
I will never understand why Sam Cane got the sort of flack that he did just because the All Blacks lost a test series against Ireland. He has always poured his heart into every game that he has ever played and although his technique has been inaccurate at times, his passion and technique are completely separate. We can surely say that the effects that he has withstood from the Ireland series has been crucial to the All Blacks success in the Quarters however, just because something appears logical doesn’t automatically make it right. I do wish that Sam Cane gets 100 All Blacks caps before retiring because he deserves it more than anyone. Thanks Tim for this video! Incredible as always!
Sam Cane broke his neck in game a few years ago. How hard do you have to be to come back from that? Played the game as hard as anyone, deserves far more appreciation than he gets.
Aside from obvious choices, i wonder if Ethan de Groot might get a chance as captain. Possibly early in his ABs career and nz doesn't have many prop captains but he's got a mortgage on his position and has leadership material
Honestly, I wouldn't even be surprised if De Groot doesn't make the team this year, his form has been subpar this season.
@@icefarrow7959 wondering who you'd pick ahead of him?
Should hopefully be Savea. As an Irishman he is just unreal and always stands out in every game I watch.
The front runner is probably Scott Barrett, Savea is a good option but the history with Barrett and Razor is probably going to be the deciding factor
Savea good player but not a good captain
savea an Irishman?
Scott Barrett
@@bertgoat lol yeah badly worded. I just mean he is an unreal player watching from the outside.
I am not a kiwi but the referees from the final screwed him! The amount of crap he would have received because of that stupid decision. Ruined his career. How do you give a Red Card for something when the other guy stays on the field and keeps playing. Referees are stupid in this modern day.
Sam was a champion player did a lot for NZ that went unnoticed I wish him and his family all the best for the future 💪👌
Such a shame I always thought in the back of my mind he’d want to make it to just one more World Cup to try to make up for the final but it looks like I was wrong - underrated player who got unnecessary hate
Can't believe Sam Cane is already 32yrs old, time flies! Scott Barrett or Ardie Savea seem the most likely replacements as Captain, would say Codie Taylor as well, but he's not guaranteed to start with the form Asafo Aumua is in. Would also expect the likes of Peter Lakai, Brayden Iose & Wallace Sititi to probably get some mins in the AB backrow this yr.
Honestly feels like he'd be a bit older. He's been around forever!
Sititi 🙌🏼
A true professional and got way yoo much criticism, deserved better and hopefully now people will give him the credit he deserves
Great video, love hearing proper thoughts or analysis on New Zealand . Just so looking forward to Englands two tests in a few weeks time . Looking forward to your thoughts on that series Tim. Maybe nearer the time .
A legend of the game for sure!
Savea hands down. Huge respect for him as a player and a person.
@@michaelmoynihan9591 Your nappy chafing?
@@michaelmoynihan9591 Wow, you really really do have a nappy rash. Are you that naive and ignorant that you've never seen it before ... or understand the context?
Seriously, are you just trolling or do you really not understand what you're watching?
I absolutely love your show!
Your unbiased lens on the game is most appreciated. not to mention refreshing. As for Sam, he thoroughly deserves a golden send off. He's done Yeoman service for his country. Wishing you all the best you wish yourself, Sam.
ABs have an extremely tough year ahead. Two home tests against England from a cold start, the RC with both tests against SA in SA, a northern tour with tests against Ireland, France and England. 15 tests in all I think and given the length of the season I wouldn’t be surprised if Cane played another 5 tests and got his 100th cap. I hope he does cause the pressures off him.
Bon voyage Sam. Hard as nails, he got so close to winning a RWC against some crazy-difficult odds.
Final still hurts 😢
Hes the reason we lost lol
@@naisyjohns And Shannon Frizel's 🟨. And the missed kicks from Jordie and Richie... 😮💨
@@wyntonvisser429 Those pale in comparison to almost 60 minutes with 14 players. And the guy was the head captain........
@@wyntonvisser429yes that's what separates Mounga from greatness normally he would get that kick but failed great players make it count when it matters.
Good on you Tim for showing Sam the respect he deserves.
Great insight Tim, as always, thank you.
For a captain, the main thing is if the ref is going to listen to you and be on your side on calls that could go either way.
Tim, when are the next power rankings coming out, that series is super fun!
Congratulations on 80k.
You can't make statements unless you were in the Frontline Sam cane was absolute great in the quarter finials in the world cup
Thanks for the years Sam, a class act on and off the pitch.
regarding the replacements I think the Starting back row will be 7. Dalton Papali’i, 6. Ardie Savea and 8. Hoskins Sotutu although there is plenty of talent right behind them.
With regards to the captains band I really cant see past Ardie Savea or Scott Barrett, Razor has a tough choice here but he has used Scott extensively as his captain as Super level.
I’d like to see
6. Sampeni Finau
7. Dalton Papal’i
8. Ardie Savea
20. Hoskins Sotutu
With Iose and Lakai challenging for places at 7/8 or off the bench
Never liked Sam Cane and not because of his rugby ability but in the RWC he was outstanding. When he was sent off I was devastated for him, not a fair ending for his world cup, just very bad luck.
Sam is a legend. Like you say, he had the impossible job of following Richie and Keiran.
I'm quite glad that there were opportunities after his red card in the final that could have won NZ the game (like the missed penalty) so he doesn't have to carry the loss on him.
Sam Cane's biggest problem is that he followed one of the greatest captains ever in the game.
Richie McCaw is a tough yardstick to be measured against.
At any other time following any other No 7 than Richie M, Sam Cane would have been viewed as a true great. Despite all his bad luck both of timing and terrible injuries he maintained single minded determination, class and sheer energy for that All Black shirt. A truly classy man.
Scott Barrett as Captain, 6-Finau 7-Savea 8- Jacobson
Ethan captaining the Highlanders well. Love the guy
Ah man, I love Sam Cane, he was such a good skip and excellent player
Wasnt a huge fan or cane tbf. His performance vs ireland in the rwc proved exactly why he was rated so highly.
Phenomenal player that i just didnt appreciate until after. Never hated the guy buy did question his inclusion at times.
He is a brilliant player ...they will mis him ..
The abuse following the pre WC drubbing by the Boks drove him to beat us in the quater final. Super player
It’s a real pity that Sam Cane had to play under Ian Foster.
Probably could’ve achieved much more under a better All Black coach. Such a solid player.
He was one of the 2015 World Cup winners, he was international before Foster, lol.
…well handled and stated Tim
you said it clearly
thank you stacks
it was quite necessary
Great going🥂❗️
👊🔥
🪖
The problem for me is, seeing that performance in the quater final and comparing that with so many performances over the last world cup cycle, and realising what might have been, maybe should have been. Great players deliver every match, not once every 50 games.
King Ardie
Ardie savea
Forsooth and yea verily, 'twil, perchance, be Ardie Savea. Is that English enough fer yous, ye gocki bobba ye?
I think it will be Ardie Savea
Ardie for Captain.
Ardie Savea is my vote
All Blacks losing a great captain and bold player of the game. No one else is Abel to raise Cane like him.
Scott Barrett or Patty Tuipuloutu. We love Ardie. But it’s good to take pressure off our best player and just let him play.
Agreed, he has better games without the arm band.
FYI, Kolisi is stepping down as Springboks captain, so Dupont is the only one remaining long term out of the countries mentioned
That WC final was brutal for him. But the ABs can still make use of his services. Maybe not at captaincy level but as a player in general
Enjoy yourself in Cape Town, definitely find time to hike to the summit of Lion's Head
Ardie on the field is an absolute beast. Off the field, such a pleasant bloke - and that goes for so many rugby players. But I worry that giving Ardie the task of captain might hinder his playing abilities, too many off-the-ball responsibilities to worry about. But I hope I'm wrong, because he's such an All Black!
So, my guesses for skipper - needs more thought.
I haven’t watched super rugby this year at all but akira ioane is always quality internationally imo
Are you by any chance goin to South Africa to watch tests vs Ireland? If u mention one more time i goin to throw a brick at my screen 😅
As a Saffa - Sam is a legend and mad respect for him. If I were an AB I’d give Scott a run at captain with a stern talking to to mitigate brain farts: Two strikes and you’re out and Savea takes over.
As a boks fan, he was always goeie waarde (good value). He never lived up to the greatness of Pieter-Steph or Kwagga but was pretty good, maybe as good as Dan du Preez.
Kwagga? Surely you jest.
😊😊❤❤
Dalton was excellent at 7 in 2022, largely as Cane was out and he got a decent run at 7. Could probably do the job at 6, although depends what the ABs want there? A class tight 6 so the 7/8 can be a bit more dymanic? Time will tell. Also look out for Peter Lakai whos been playing for the Canes at 7 and has largely pushed out Kirifi for a starting spot. Still only 20 or 21, this bloke is doing the business for Wellington.
Ardie Savea, surely.
Sam Cane will get to 100 caps for NZ 🔥🇿🇦
Bokkie here. Sam Kane an amazing rugby player. Kieren Reid is the person you listen to here.
Aw bugger off, Razor hasn't even named his camp yet and we're picking captains, pffft. Much luv to Mr Cane, he's another one of our cherished All Blacks, put sinew and bone into our game, did any of you see our world cup campaign, lol, all the very best to him.
Losing a home test series is akin to losing a World Cup final in NZ. Sam Cane copped a lot of stick because of that test series loss to Ireland.
Razor cleaning house!
As much as Savea deserves it, being a Crusader, Scott Barrett will get it.
It will be Scott Barrett
Long term. I think Peter Laki will be 7. Needs a couple of years Devolpment though.
Ardie Savea. That's the only choice for captain of the AB's.
IMHO, Ardie is in the same league as Richie McCaw in that he is the kind of leader you would not only follow into battle, but also the type of leader that lifts the team when they need it most.
As we all know, Richie did that in spades.
There are loads of games that the AB's should have lost when he was captain, but Richie would bust a tackle or win a turnover, just something to give the team a lift, to give them a way forward.
And from what I saw at the world cup final last year, Ardie is exactly that type of leader.
And leaders like that are rare...
Let's hope Razor doesn't waste that.
More than likely it's leaning towards Scott Barrett or Ardie Savea.. there isn't really no other options that stand out for the All Blacks. If I'm going to have to choose someone else, then possibly Codie Taylor.
If Sam Cane isn't selected (Which is a long shot) then the AB's back three will look like this.
6. Samipeni Finau
7. Dalton Papa'lii
8. Ardie Savea
It’s gonna be David Havili as captain lol, Razor has a real hard in for Davey boy
If the AB had a goalkicker AND took their kicks they could have won! So one kick could have made the difference of how good the AB and the ref was and how bad the Springboks and ref was(SA side)! Its a fine line and comes back to right choices!
A top player and bloke no doubt. No where near the quality required at 7 for the ABs however.
Just wanna throw a ridiculous left-field option in for number 6: Brad Shields. Highly unlikely due to his age, but hes shown this year he still has it.
Great player, always underrated, BUT that tackle in the world cup final, lost a lineout thrown over the top in a great attacking position, sees red, he anticipates the turning man goes to smash him and is too high - completely unnecessary, and has a huge impact on the game. He did the same thing on Robby Henshaw against Ireland 7 years ago, return match in Dublin after Ireland's first win against New Zealand in Soldier Field. Henshaw gathered a ball in behind, turned and Cane smashed him high. Henshaw had to go off, Cane got away with it, different times
If not Ardie… definitely Dalton papali’i. He already captained the blues last year
Farrell copped the ire of the fans, unfairly as an individual, but he was a lightning rod for a series of defeats.
It’ll be a co captaincy scenario with Codie Taylor and Scott Barrett .
Patrick Tuipulotu is the only form garranteed lock in that i would pick as a leader. I would happily pick Blackadder or Jacobson as a leader at 6 but the actual "in form" loosies are all newbies, competition across the board in all 3 positions, without being established leaders.(maybe in future)
It's a great time to hand over to the next generation, unfortunately Razor has historically chosen to ignore Scott Barret's continual filthy play(not accidental cards) and he will likely be captain.
Adie Savea no doubt
Cane was at his best whilst McCaw was still playing. He never reached that level again after McCaw retired and was pretty ordinary for an AB captain.
Anton Lienert Brown for Capt?
Nah
Ardie Savea .... but he has shown asperity with the refs ... Scott Barrett, no, the cheap shot on Marx disqualifies him in my eyes ... Sam and Richie tested the ref but never took cheap shots.
Respect to Cane man. He had the hardest job as captain as this era of Rugby is not like previous eras where Ab's dominated everything. As for Owen Farrell...I do believe he is a genuine nice guy off the field but his attitude sucks on it!
lol the sprinboks broke his back
Is Julian Montoya not still captain
Ardie will probably move to 7 and be made captain.
someone is looking buff ;)
Return Savea to flanker and he can really shine.
Scott Barrett skippers for me. Leave Ardi free to play 6/7. Move Hoskins in to 8, Peter Laki or Du'plessis Kirifi to start in the other backrow spot. Its going to be a great year to be a kiwi.
Love Ardie, but if I was the coach I would just want him to be the world class player he is.
“Just go out there and be a genius/nightmare, Ardie - someone else will deal with the ref”
I think Sams 'International' mojo was ripped from him the second he got that red card in the RWC Final. Gutted for him.
Ireland supporter. Peter was way off-side and bang out of order for making his remark to Cane, with reference to Mc Caw. Peter is a very good player, but never an Irish 'Great'. Certainly not as our Captain. He has a rude and foul gob at times, which instantly knocks the "Great" into touch and right over the dead-ball line. Go well Sam Cane. All Black 1113.👍🏴☠☘.
I’m not an Ireland supporter but I found this comment quite surprising. I think players throw abt comments like on a regular basis when they’re on the pitch. POM’s a bit unlucky perhaps that the camera’s picked it up but I reckon it’s more common than we think. It may not be in the spirit of the game but so long as everyone shakes hands at the end I don’t see the issue
On a side note POM is definitely an Irish great given his contributions through the years. To be a starter or at least in the 23 man squad for multiple six nations trophy wins, Lions tours (and captain) and especially that performance he put in against the ABs when Ireland beat them in 2018 he’s a definitely a great in my book
@@GoldenGoalposts I say it as it is and I've heard him on so many occaisions. I am not "brand bias". I call it as it is. Always will. Fact is Fact. If you represent your team as a veteran and/or Captain, you do so as an ambassador, too. If made it ' specifically, intentionally, nastily personal,' in your face, and then said "Sorry" afterwards? Nah. It's been said. If I screamed, "F-off ye C###!" on a pitch and women and children supporters heard it, as I've heard Pete do, many's the time? Nah mate. There's a limit. This is Rugby, not football...There has to be. In my opinion so😊
@@KernowekTimunfortunately that should have no bearing on his playing abilities. I can understand if u don’t like him as a human being bc of what he says but he’s consistently in the Ireland side and his contribution to club and country is undeniable. Fact is fact as you’ve put it
Has to be Ardie
Scott Barrett's a liability as captain. Must be Ardie. He is a respected player.
Damien Mackenzie
Mcgenzie 😂😂 can only defend against his garden gnome. He forgets in a match they,re no static objects..they are moving objects twice his size. 😂😂 far too small a guy .he will be lucky to make the bench never mind captain😂😂😂.let him try dwarf rugby?😂😂😂😂😂
Sam… thank you. A Kiwi we can be proud of!
Next up for me must be Ardie. Brilliant player who leads by example.
Scott is a very good player but too many brain-fades (cards) to be considered IMHO.
It's inexplicable to me that in a world cup final he was yellow carded twice then red carded, he was also captain during real lowlights in the Foster coaching tenure. I'm a fan, not an ex player with torn alligiencea, let's call it for what it is.
Ardie the safer option, Barret likes cards
That’s a fairly tough one for old Sam. His record must be the worst in professional AB history. A lot of bad records
Sam "cooked his goose" with that stupid red card in the RWC23 final.
oh noooooo! anyways.......
Mate he’s an unreal player. That Ireland quarter final he was a big reason New Zealand won. Gets unnecessary hate.
You're pathetic
oh noooo….. it’s not like the all blacks are gonna lose anytime soon what are we gonna do….. it’s not like our country doesn’t have irreplaceable depth.

Ardie Savea should be the captain.Barrett is great player but gets too many red and yellow cards.
Savea best position is 7.Loose forwards : Savea,Sotutu,Finau.
Finau is biggest blindside at 6ft 5ins he gives you height in the line out.
