@@RobVollat this has 2 sequels that I finally got a hold of and I'm going to react to. Elements from them were put in The Departed as well. Probably why it's a bit longer.
@@TequilaToothpick yeah, that happens with remakes. I use that phrasing because I didn't like how "remade by The Departed" sounded as a sentence and couldn't think of a better word to use at the time that sounded more pleasing. I'm just weird like that.
*8xM* You are the VERY FIRST reactor I have seen to react this movie. Its a classic and changed the way Hong Kong did movies. It also made Andy Lau one of my favourite actors - he has been in many other movies. But to me this was his standout role. I saw this in the cinema only because my friend worked there (UGC, now Cineworld) and I got a free ticket. I just lazily selected this. The ticket entry guy said it was a good movie and I wouldn't be disappointed. - I tell you what, it was good! It mustve been good because Scorcesee was very heavily inspired by it to create The Departed. There is a prequel and the sequel. Like the Godfather series, the first sets up the main movie, the third is a bit crazy happening after the events. Sadly you can see the mainland Chinese influence in it but it doesn't stick out too much. It does have some to-and-fro editing though which could confuse some viewers. Great actors, Andy Lau, Tony Leung.
The best cop movie, period. It presents honour, dignity, sacrify, moral conflict within the law enforcemnet circle. The scene when Tony has to salute a dead officer from afar is one of the best moments that I like. Most movies just portait the hero cop like a person who doesn't care much about anything, lives in a messy house, eats junk food and drinks beer (but somehow manages to be in a very good shape). Please take a look at the rest of the trilogy but I think this one is the best.
@@thezeppo1138 yes but very very shallow adaption, the sequels are 2 whole fully realised movies. Most importantly, the departed had a major plot hole on who knows the undercover’s identity which is the whole crux of why Tony Leung was so desperate- Officer Wong is the only one who knows his true identity. But in The Departed, there’s no reason for Damon to be so paranoid cos Mark also knew his secret identity. The confrontations then became meaningless, there wasn’t a real stake for Damon to be so desperate to meet Leo at the roof top. It cheapens the entire story, and we haven’t even touch on the character and the way it was shot. Internal affairs is much more nuanced, Departed is like loony tunes
In Hong Kong, they call Tony Leung the actor that can act even with just his eyes. See his reaction from 12:41 onwards, imagine going undercover, an environment that is not belonged to u and having the only friend die in front of ur eyes. The kinda shock, mental breakdown but ure not able to express it. This is the scene that won him the best leading actor of HK Film Award that year and it’s epical
Yeah, I used to collect Dragon Dynasty DVDs and some of the first films they put out were 2 and 3 and that's how I heard of the series. I can finally now watch them now that I've finally got my hands on part 1. Glad to hear they are also awesome!
@@thezeppo1138 Nice! The second one was actually my personal favorite, it got the taste of Godfather and the acting was phenomenal. You definately should do the 2 if you enjoy the first one!
Great movie. However, the subtitle here is so bad. It's losing 50% of the charm and details. I wish you could understand Cantonese, so you know how much of a masterpiece this movie actually is.
