Only seen the first Infernal Affairs, and it was a decade or so ago, but I remember having a pretty similar response to yours. I guess the way I put it was that The Departed feels like it's packed with more incident, but Infernal Affairs feels like it's packed with more meaning.
Infernal affair is heartfelt and more suspenseful. The dialogue is minimal compared to Departed but the two leads were able show us the characters feelings and intentions through out the film with their facial expression and amazing acting... Lau and Leung are phenomenal actors 💯🙏💯 its also more stylish, clean, suspenseful, intense, and even beautiful at times because layers are added to the character's complexity and humanity in subtle ways ... I was deeply moved when Lau's fiance exlaims with tears in her eyes"i cant finish my book because i cant decide if my lead is a good or bad guy. Thats a decision only he can make". Lau knew that all along his destiny is in his hand. It is a masterpiece. 10/10.
Watched the trilogy when it aired for the first time on TV in my country back in 2005 or something like that. They showed the films late at night and I caught the first film just by chance - got hooked immediately. Loved them. Years later I was bummed out when I discovered that there's an American remake - Hollywood seems to always do that: take a good foreign thing and "pretend it was Hollywood's idea". (Sorry, I'm not able to articulate properly what I'm meaning because English isn't my first language but maybe you kind of get an idea.)
No, I get what you’re saying! If English isn’t your first language, you could’ve fooled me! But, I remember when Scorcese’s film came out, they had talked at length about it being inspired by Infernal Affairs, so I never got the impression that it was “their idea”. I think I said it in the review - the first two IA movies are great, the last felt a bit of a cash grab, but on the whole, I prefer the original movies to Scorcese’s, but it’s still good, too, in its own way.
feels like the twist at the end of the departed, where Nicholson's character is also an informant, never felt that impactful. and i think its as u say, the script is just making it more complicated for being complicated
Thanks a lot for the review, tried to find something on my language but thank god I know english 😁 Never liked The Departed and barely remember it, so Infernal Affairs was like an almost new movie to me and it is really much better with it's simplicity, meaning and psychology. The script of Departed is actually good because it's really adapt the plot of the original in another culture and religious beliefs but the Asian ones I like better 😄

I love the Infernal Affairs trilogy, all three are great in their own way. However, there’s just way too much happening in The Departed, and it feels kind of a mess at times. It’s needlessly over complicated for the sake of it, has that love triangle subplot for no reason, and I think the ending is just bad. When The Departed first came out I was a big fan, however, watching it more than once really is a detriment to it. I love Scorsese, but he seems on autopilot here.
I think Departed is almost Marty saying, this is an awesome story, but I want to put my spin on it. And, in adding things, it actually took away from the story being told. I still like it, but I prefer the stories in IA 1 and 2.

I can’t say that I feel like it’s that necessary to upgrade. I’m sure for super fans of the film it’s worthy of that, but I am more than happy with the quality I have on the Criterion set.
@@order42show I already own the Hong Kong BluRay boxset from years ago and was heavily considering double dipping on the criterion set but I'm in no rush.
@@order42show I've bought the trilogy on VCD, DVD, and BluRay. I certainly wouldn't mind buying on UHD but only thing stopping me is the lack of a 4ktv and a UHD player. So I guess I'm excused from buying the upgrade. Lol! I even got an officially licensed Infernal Affairs 3 coffee mug that came out with the limited edition DVD release of the 3rd film. Been using that mug to this very day.
Wow, VCD! I only have ever purchased one movie on VCD (Star Wars: Episode I), but that’s sweet. I actually would like to own more because it’s so different. All 4K releases aren’t equal - some movies look outstanding, and some look only markedly better than what a 4K TV already does to upscale. First, yes - get a 4K TV. But then, before buying, watch or read reviews on these releases. If you’re a collector or a super fan of the movie, almost nothing can stop you from buying, but for those movies that you’re a casual fan of, it can save you a lot of money!
I saw Infernal Affairs 1 when it came out (I'm from Hong Kong). I remember also seeing The Departed but didn't like it much. Maybe because it was set in a different culture and some parts were just weird and unnecessary (Jack Nicholson in the movie theatre).
Yeah, the cultural differences are definitely there, but Departed just feels bloated in comparison to the original. There are still things I like in it, but yeah, the original is better, more focused.
@@order42show My question is Do you like romantic movie? Because you said in your review you don't interest in horror movie therefore from that review I don't request you for horror movie but I can request you for one very good romantic, revenge, thrill movie
So kind of you to say! But…what reviewer out there lies…? I just try to be genuine about what I think because…that’s what I want when I watch a review.
Ah, well - the thing is, I like _well made_ movies, no matter the genre. Any type of movie out there, there are good examples. It just seems that so many filmmakers decide to make a type of movie and they lean too heavily on tropes. This is a business, making movies, and sometimes decisions are made based on what’s going to make them the most money rather than just telling a good story. There are some GREAT horror movies out there, just like any genre, so I don’t like to discount anything. So request away! If it’s a story well-told, then I’m down to check it out!
Yeah, and I guess we really shouldn’t be surprised, right? Retellings of a story has been happening since…well, probably since the beginning of storytelling. I have no problem recommending that Criterion set even if there are some diminishing returns on the sequels.
Wow, I didn’t know that. There’s a line in the Lord of the Rings where Bilbo said “stretched like butter scraped over too much bread”. That sort of describes what I thought of the sequels, and trying to imagine a series where it continues…🤯 Also…Alan Mark states in one of the interviews that he has an idea for IA 4, so…

I have not yet seen ' Infernal Affairs ' but I have seen ' The Departed. ' I think it is a great operatic film which wants and does go over the top. Not many directors do that and the scene in an opera house with two bored women and Jack Nicholson in the middle listening to ' Lucia di Lammermoor ' ( all in heightened colour ) made me realise that a lot of films would never take such a risk. Also Di Caprio and Matt Damon give the finest performances of their career. A frenetic film, a violent film and language that turns four letter words into a sort of crazed poetry. I will compare though. Scorsese is not my favourite director and I think he is not as great as he is made out to be. I watched ' Goodfellas ' after ' The Departed ' and found it bland and boring, but then it is just my opinion.
I think Departed feels bloated after seeing Infernal Affairs, but still a really well-made movie. I definitely prefer IA, but Departed is probably Marty’s most entertaining film to me.
Yeah, I can see that, and I can see why Scorsese added it. It’s like a chef adding something extra to a classic dish. But…it makes it a different thing.
The Departed tries to build the characters out a bit more, but, I kind of agree with you. To me, it’s not just a matter of length - the story is just overall tighter and more impactful, at least that’s how I see it.

Hands down Infernal Affairs trilogy
Yessir!
Thanks for summarising why I loved Infernal Affairs, but was disappointed with The Departed.
Of course! This was a fun one to do because I hadn’t seen the original stories before.
I've been saying that about the Dignam character for years! Thank you thank you!
Yeah, it really takes away some of the suspense, right? IA definitely handled that better.

The Departed is OK remake.
Infernal Affairs is MasterPiece.
Agreed. I don’t want to diminish The Departed if people love it, but to me, watching Infernal Affairs I made me realize how much fluff Scorcese added.
