      The CG is next level honestly. It may be like another visual trick like the fact that most trolls in the film are shown in darkness with nightvision, or when they are in sunlight they are only being shown from the body down most times. It's one of the most believable things I've seen a found footage film despite the unbelievable plot.

    • @thehitherto5348

    • @JoriaanPanda
      @JoriaanPanda 5 років тому +28

      Worm's on to something with that the nightvision helped a lot, since it helps sell the idea of the trolls being naturally occurring creatures and predators. Glowing eyes in the dark is what (I think) a lot of people associate with cats and other predatory animals that have evolved to hunt in darkness, it could be a primal sort of feeling. Of course nightvision gives everything glowing eyes, but for some reason with the trolls it helped sell the illusion that they're real, believable and existing creatures a whole lot more than with, say, a demon or something - it feels closer to nature.

    this is one of my absolute favourite movies! I'm not norwegian (I'm german) but I grew up with childrens books and folklore from scandinavian countries. Going into the woods we always used to say "this is where the trolls live" and point at small caves or holes in the ground. This movie is everything I ever wanted as a kid and it's made for a more adult audience so it's the absolute perfect movie for me now. This movie gave me a warm feeling and a need for adventure I never felt since my childhood. It's so fun to watch (something that hollywood movies aren't most of the time) and the right amount of creepy and believable. Go watch it if you haven't! And then take a walk in the woods

      I meant to type quote, don’t know why I typed theory.
      Technically you’re 100% correct.
      I still stand by what I commented, because Oren Peli didn’t originate that idea. He is the director of Paranormal Activity, and he was stating something that had been true in cinema for over a hundred years. I should’ve said that Oren Peli should’t be the filmmaker whose quote is used to attribute what makes found footage work, or why unknowns are the best to cast in that style of movie.
      Yet, people treat this quote as if it’s some genius idea that Oren had about the found footage genre. He’s repeated it enough that many think he did originate that idea.
      Besides that, he is a terrible filmmaker.

    In the 2000s, there was some controversy around the construction of power lines and large transmission towers, nicknamed "monster masts", across the scenic mountain regions. This movie explains why the power lines are necessary; they are in fact electric fences to keep the trolls in the mountains.

    I've never thought about this movie as a satire on found footage horror, it's just a comedy. If you've grown up with Norwegian fairy tales and stories about trolls, this movie will just be a straight up comedy to you. It's really only a satire on found footage horror if you're not familiar with the folklore.

      Victor Bjørdal I know this comment is 5 months old, but I’m just rewatching Ryan’s vids and your comment stuck out to me/got me thinking.
      I’m not entirely sure how having preexisting knowledge of the folklore removes the satiric tones the film has?
      If anything, having that knowledge should make the satire stronger? Because you’re aware of specifically what the movie is being derivative of (fairy tales), and that surely adds to the satire? Maybe just me.
      For context, I’m British, and a lot of our satire content is specifically referencing something everyone is aware of for a comedic/political/satirical message.
      I don’t really know what the point of my comment is tbh, I’m just textually spewing out what my brains thinking lol

      That's probably why he thinks it's satire. I haven't seen the movie but from what i get it's just an interesting, fun premise, executed in the found footage genre.
      But this guy is an enlightened movie critic person so everything has to be some sort of social commentary. And even more so if the movie isn't american and you don't know anything about the culture it comes from.
      His last few sentences expose him for what he is: "Plot holes and contunuity errors don't matter. Shit up you nit-picker". I'm paraphrasing. He uses many more words to sound smarter.

    What? I don't mean to be rude... But it feels like you REALLY want to force the message you perceived into the film.
    The fact is that the movie never once makes a joke about found footage films, and doesn't deconstruct any tropes either - it's simply a well made found footage film. Why is that hard to imagine?

    • @STOP.musick
      @STOP.musick 4 роки тому +35

      Agreed except that finding out the cast are all comedians made me think that the only reason they all read this script and still decided to be in it is bc they thought it was funny. It's not goofy and spoofy like the Scary Movie series, but it def feels like it's poking fun at SOMETHING. Whether it's the troll folklore, found footage style movies, government conspiracies, etc., I don't know, but it's deliberately exaggerated and cartoonish at some points. I don't think parody is the right word, it's more like satire to me.
      That's just how I feel, though. I actually like found footage films, so long as they keep a good pace, so I could also believe that this is just a well-made and very original take in a saturated genre.

    • @horvathbenedek3596
      @horvathbenedek3596 4 роки тому +21

      @@STOP.musick I would delineate between making fun of a genre, and making fun of its common tropes to lead to a more realistic experience. Take Cabin in the Woods for example - it's technically a parody of classical horror tropes, but ultimately the movie embraces some tropes, and become a great horror movie USING the very tropes it criticized. A piece criticizing a genre only works when it either offers a working solution, or has the humility to approach the subject without the subject without the pompousness of an art student.
      I feel the same here. Maybe it's deliberately a bit over the top, but the movie itself works, and it doesn't only build on the novelty of shitting on other movies, it succeeds because it stands on its own as a movie.

      @Gamer 4 the eternity the movie is comedic and does not take itself seriously. Some of the comedy might fly over you head since the movie is aimed at a norwegian audience. The very premise of hunting trolls and there being a huge norwegian conspiracy is in itself a silly and comical concept to norwegians, since this is our childhood fairy tales and stories. It's essentially the same as having a movie called the "toothfairy hunter" with governmental conspiracies about tooth fairy coverups.
      The difference between parody and satire is that parody is a comedic and exaggerated imitation of someone or something specific. Whereas satire always offers indirect critique about the world through a form of "sarcastic" impression that is not specifically directed to the genre it's built on. Its been awhile since I have seen it, but to me, "troll hunter" falls more under the category of satire than parody, due to the large amounts of "American" goverment and conspiracy imitations that it makes.
      Trolls in this movie is essentially portrayed as the Norwegian equivalent of the USA's superstitions and conspiracy theories about aliens and UFOs.

      Damn good movie. Grave Encounters is another not so bad take on the genre.

    You’ve mastered scripted articulation, that seems super natural. You rock mang

    I was blessed enough to have a buddy suggest this to me when it was on Netflix and just love everything about it. 10/10

    Saw this back in high school. I forgot all about it, so thanks for reminding me it exists. I’ll definitely have to rewatch it

    Watched it on Netflix a few years ago. Absolutely brilliant film, not just as a satire, but as a fantasy/horror tale. Thanks for the reminder. I just ordered it on bluray.

    I've seen "Troll Hunters" many times, it was on Netflix last year. Great movie!

    I'd imagine that Troll Hunter and your audience share a lot of the same target audience. Not the mainstream audience.

    I loved this movie, I believe this and Cloverfield got me into the genre.

    I remember finding this movie online countless years ago, as a Canadian I love films from across the world, and even though found footage isn't normally my cup of tea, this film was amazing. Totally worth watching in 460p. Honestly I had no idea it was satirical in nature, because everything in the film felt so genuine. Including the effects, which I thought were unique for the found footage-monster genre

    I randomly put this movie on just for background noise to fall asleep to, only I couldnt fall asleep because I found myself actually enjoying it. Glad I found this little gem. : )
