You left off one of the best reasons for the yoke... The S/X and plaid versions all have a useful display behind the yoke, showing settings, road pathways and obstacles that would mostly be hidden by the top of a steering wheel. It took me about 10 minutes to decide that I liked it.
Never in my life had I had the top of a steering wheel obscure a dash in any car I ever drove. The tilting function of a steering wheel, introduced in the early 1960s, ensures that you can always adjust the wheel in a way that doesn't obscure the dash in any way. So this was never a problem, and Tesla 'solved' this non-issue by introducing an impractical, oddly shaped yoke that looks very awkward and unsafe to operate (having to palm it around like a forklift looks super sketchy). They also made the turn signal controls capacitive touch buttons to frustrate users with them always being in a different place depending on wheel position and having to look down to find them because the turn signal stalk that's always in the same place and easy to operate even blindfolded was just too convenient. Same for the horn. It was too easy and convenient to smash the large center of the steering wheel, so the genius solution to that ease and convenience was to relegate the horn to a tiny capacitive button far from your thumb that you'll have to visually hunt for in an emergency. Tesla essentially took a regular steering wheel and made it worse in every way. No thanks. Looking 'futuristic' is not worth the frustration of using it every day.

@@InSaN3ViSioN I have never in my life driven a car where the top of the steering wheel blocks the dash or instrument cluster. That's what the tilt function of a steering wheel was invented for, which has been around for more than 70 years. So unless you're Shaq, it shouldn't be an issue in 99.9% of cars. Let's face it, the yoke is only in that car because Elon though it was cool, not because it's practical. I drove a Model S LR (2022) with a yoke for a week to try it for myself, and couldn't wait to return to my regular car with a round steering wheel. The turn signals and horn were the most infuriating part, as this video states, along with the completely horrific maneuveing in my 4 story underground garage at work. I almost hit a few cars on a few occasions with the constant tight turns in the garage. It was like steering with a brick, grabbing empty air half the time. It was frightening and unnecessary. @@squaredawayeveryday The stalk removal is the worst part, tiny haptic feedback devices attached to a controller that is designed to spin is no bueno. If you are one who can't be bothered to use the turn signal on every turn and lane change then I suppose the yoke would make some sort of sense, but we shouldn't be designing cars for bad drivers.
In summary, it seems that Tesla only put this yoke in the car for aesthetic reasons and to be different for novelty's sake. It seems less practical in every way than a regular steering wheel, and having to palm it around like a forklift in tight turns seems super awkward and unsafe. Function and usability definitely takes the furthest back seat on the bus relative to form. It also looks goofy. It looks like a 5 year old's cartoonish interpretation of an F1 steering wheel. It seems too wide, like the bike handles on a beach cruiser bike. Appreciate the review, just not seeing the point of this yoke other than the funky aesthetic.
Indeed. It's not very practical at all. The most frustrating thing though are the buttons that have replaced the stalks. In Europe we use roundabouts everywhere instead of intersections, and it's a real pain in the ass to use because the buttons keep shifting positions and will sometimes even be inverted, depending on the angle of the yoke. I can never use my blinkers in a roundabout without looking down, but there's no time for that, and I've almost crashed twice because I couldn't hit the right button in time and people didn't know where I was going... I also end up accidentally pressing the horn too while turning the yoke in roundabouts and parking situations. This was a step in the wrong direction. Esthetics over safety and user friendlyness. Same thing with the wipers introduced with the model 3. Having to operate them from the screen is just bad design. Try hitting a small button on a screen on a bumpy road... some guy in Germany crashed his car, trying to operate the wipers in a model 3. I think this is all just about cost cutting. Buttons are cheaper than stalks...
The yoke I don’t mind but the stalks I do and the honk should have been left the way it was for centuries. Imagine you’re in a situation where you need to honk, you will be late guaranteed. That’s something that’s so unnecessary. And the windshield we wiper thing, I’ve never had fluid came out when I didn’t want it to. Press the button on the left stalk and it wipes, hold it down harder for fluid.

You didn't address the main problem; How do you click the correct button when the yoke is turned? Getting muscle memory for "where to press" doesn't work since the buttons will be in different positions depending on how much you've turned. Examples; using the correct blinkers when switching lanes in a 2/3/4-lane roundabout (or when exiting a roundabout)? Or using the horn when you're turning?
Speaking from experience, this isn't really a thing. In order for the wheel to be turned to such a degree that the yoke is upside down, the car would be doing a u-turn. For me, it's a non issue.

Bottons on the yoke. In the military, this concept is called HOTAS (Hands On The Stick). I flew an OH-58 in the Army, with about 37 switches on the controls. Missing an opportunity to have buttons on the back side of the yoke, Chrysler and GM have buttons on the back at 3:00 and 9:00. I can't wait for the stalk delete and yoke for my Model 3.
It's a pain in the ass to use in roundabouts. You'll never be able to consistently press the correct button for the blinkers as they keep shifting positions based on the angle of the yoke and will often be inverted. I've almost crashed a few times because i just can't hit the correct button to signal where im goings. You'll also end up hitting the horn when you don't intend to. It's not a very user-friendly design. Would make sense in an airplane where you turn the yoke max 45 degrees, but not in a car.. I can see it working better in the US though, since you mostly use intersections there. But in Europe we mostly use roundabouts, and you need to first blink into it and then blink again to signal out while still in a steep turn. There's no time to look down to find the button.. it's very frustrating and not something you'll get used to since you can't train your muscle memory due to the fact that the buttons keep shifting positions.

IMO yokes only make sense in drive by wire mode. a yoke is expected to turn 90 degrees left/right. a 2x 360 turn is annoying with, because you are crossing the arms. that's simply silly. now, if you put dbw controls, you can add controls such as triggers like in ps5 control, to horns, turn lights, ux control, etc. Yoke came simply too soon, pre-establishing a bad reputation hard to bend.

In case of emergency, like an uncontrolled slide, youre fakked with a yoke.
Lol!
It is very true. I tried drifting mine and it is nearly impossible. I hate the yoke for actual driving. It is awful unless you are on a drag strip.

How did u afford it at such a young age?
Its called Debt! Don't try it sometime!
Great video! Thx for sharing your thoughts
You bet! Thanks for watching
@@FireWalkMusic I just saw a video of what Canoo did with their "wheel". Half a turn max and the steer wheels are maxed angle.
Variable rate is the next iteration / fix for this awkward yoke.
Thats pretty cool!
I highly recommend to get accustomed using voice commands. Tesla has done a great job, so you can do everything via voice

I have a model 3 LR and it also came with a line through the steering wheel. Overtime though it fades and becomes less noticeable

Fitting channel name with that wheel, haha!
It's a lifestyle
My mom is planning to buy a Model X until she sees the yoke steer. At least leave the long range models with the traditional one cause not everyone wants the f1 racing feeling.
To each his own...

Did you get PPF? Love your videos dude!
Thanks man! I'm scheduled for a stealth ppf end of December.
@@squaredawayeveryday ppf?
I drove a car with a broken horn that it can only be pressed from lower right corner for many years. The effective area is much larger than a button. Could you guess how many times it failed me when I really need to use it, specially when turning?
The horn is by far the worst part of this, after having the car now for 2,000 miles I can confirm the horn was a horrible design decision. The yoke you get used to, that horn though...

that line in the yoke is most likley where it splits when the air bag goes off
I don't think they split do they? It blows off with the bag (the first thing to bounce off the driver's head?)?
The yoke looks out of place in the Model S because the Model S is a full sized sedan. It makes way more sense in the roadster.

How did you afford this car? I usually see UA-camrs with 100k+ subscribers that buy this car.
Lol, UA-cam is just something I do for fun. I have a few businesses as my real job.
If you have to pick one wheel or yoke in the plaid ?

I think it should be in every model. It will take some time to get comfortable, but in the end i think it could have alot of benefits
What benefits?
how do you like it
Love it, it just gives the feeling that you're driving something special.
Never noticed the panel break at the back of the steering column. It’s driving me mental!
That’s on every car. It’s so you can adjust the “wheel” up or, down.

It takes away the DOUCHE position where people drive with their hand on the 12 o clock position at the wheel hahaha

Yoke is for Flight !!
That Plaid can Fly .. so the yoke .. ultimate speed .. trust me I drove my Hellcat at 200 plus and yes that yoke you need..
It's definitely feels nice at speed
What if the car get hacked now you cannot even control the steering wheel anymore
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks man
If I have to get outta jam this won’t work for me :/
You have to be a crazy fan of Tesla to agree with this steering wheel.

You have to be a non fun person and terrible driver to not love a yoke
from track videos i have seen, it would be better with a shorter steering rack ratio, i saw people really struggling to get a grip of the wheel when drifting the car. not a big deal on most days, but one good canadian winter and ... it can be a sad moment! even on my open cockpit race car i chose a closed steering for these rare high angle drift

Well done! The performance capability of the Model S & X Plaid certainly justifies the use of yoke steering from a safety point of view. That said, it might have made sense for Tesla to retain a steering wheel in the Long Range version of the Model S & X which have a milder performance envelope.
3.1 secs 0-60 is only a tad milder lol
Man it’s funny how Tesla fanboys just excuse every QC defects of any Tesla vehicles…..
If i cant make a full turn with one hand then i ain't buying! I always need a free hand for my lady..

Just like anything, we can adapt to a new thing. I like the yoke because it gives you more visibility. At the same time, your hands are naturally at the 9 and 3 position anyways.

They Should Change That Steering Wheel for a Normal One Don't Like It Just Saying
Oddly I just keep digging it more and more, the only part I dislike is the horn placement.
It is the dumbest thing.... the yoke wouldn’t be for me. I’d switch it out for a regular wheel from a different model Tesla.
Can't really just swap them out. However you could just buy an older S.
It wouldn’t work. They clearly specified the Yoke is the only compatible steering “wheel” for the Model S Plaid. If you’re that concerned about it, buy another model Tesla.
Great review. Some that drove it more than a few minutes. I love the yoke on my model 3. I just wish I could have the button on the yoke.
Thanks for watching!
Can you link the aftermarket yoke you got? I'm considering getting one for my M3 and looking for recommendations.

It's a dumb design
stop defending it, you know it sucks. other than the steering wheel controls, i like the car.
That's why we don't let kids design cars
The yoke is just stupid on a street car in my opinion , I will probably never have a plaid though so doest matter what I think.
The horn should be in the middle its the natural place as not every tesla owner is a Gen Z playstation playing kid. the yolk however on my model s is fab just all about getting used to it .
Music is distracting but otherwise a good review.
Thanks fo watching
Yap just got to get used to it
Yep
If you like the yoke, does that make you a 'yokel'? 😂
Probably
It doesn't look comfortable for driving long distances.
Haven't really driven it more than 2hrs on any particular drive. The Tesla's are just easy to drive in general though. Thanks for checking out the vid!
200 years to perfect a baseball hat and you wear it backwards!
Innovator
All that to say its nothing special just feels cool.
Hate it I fckn hate it!!!! Never find the horn at time and the high beams either. My hands always hurt and it is too thick. F Tesla!
Too much money spent on cars
That steering wheels suck tbh
Yoke is a joke; will never be mainstream.
You're correct, check out my 6 month update, lol!
