    I love the fact that so many talented people lived together while trying to find fortune in film industry. All of them became some of the greatest in the industry. Raimi, McDormand, Hunter and the Coen. That's too much talent in a shared space.

    This shoot out scene, along with the rest of this movie, were filmed in New Orleans. This scene took place downtown. I remember when they blocked the streets off. The gunshots were really loud.

      For me its the crescendo. The first time I watched this I died laughing when they uncovered the machine gun. This scene and the hit attempt on the boss are just so perfectly stupid.

      This was never a legit police procedure. The movie depicts the (unnamed but Chicago-esque) city's police department as controlled by the mafia and used by it to take out rival criminal organizations.

    I love the way the blocking makes the action appear so absurd... as if a shootout between so many cops and a few gunmen would last that long. I think it also illustrates how in real life, the police are agents that act on behalf of an entity-- the governor, an elected sheriff, the mayor, the state. They supply the force and the entity directs that violence at the target of the day. The targets are unimportant to the police since the police are only agents of the state and hold no stake in who is affected by the violence they inflict.

      Not that way back. In the 1970s the Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a house to flush out some radicals. Not only did all the radicals die, the entire block burned down.

    Yea if this was to happen today, the police would definitely lose since civilians have more firearms than police do. Police only carry pistols and shotguns mostly, very few carry AR15s and it also depends which county or city budget gives them as well.

      Actually, it is important. It's showing the turning tide of Leo's fortunes as the cops start working for Casper. It also illustrates how violent the mob war is turning (Casper talks about it briefly in the following scene talking to Tom).
