- Erik heads to Colorado for an OTC Elk and Bear hunt. He chases bugles in the elk woods and has a couple close encounters with some black bears. This hunt had its ups and downs but was successful in the end.

Possibly another hunter like yourself who shot and maimed the animal because the shot was too cool not to take and then couldn’t find it so it just died for no good reason. Just a theory though

What a roller coaster and awesome hunt! Great hunt and great bear! If only archery wasn't such a game of inches, guess that is why we continue to do it. As to the other dead bear, seems logical that another hunter shot it and couldn't recover it.

Grat video fellas. Second off that bear that had died must have been shot and was never tracked. But great video glad you guys could put the 2 different species into 1 great hunting trip. Those are definitely some of the best times to make those great memeories. 👍

It’s most likely it was either shot and not recovered by another hunter or taken out by a bigger bear.
Hell of a hunt, I am imagining a gnarly bear scrap the ended badly for that guy..probably tried to tangle with tour stud bear!

I haven't seen any of the other posts but my bet is on possible other hunters ... I hunt alot around eastern Oregon and have come across a few kills from other hunters ... I think the bear was shot and never recovered, unfortunately I have had that experience. As hunters we do everything possible to make a quick ethical kill, but sometimes the animals strength prevails.

My dad once pulled half an arrow from the lung of a bull elk, it was a frontal shot which fully penetrated one lung, the elk was still going strong when it was shot and killed. Elk are tough animals and I personally recommend only taking double lung shots

It would not surprise me if it was shot and never recovered. I’ve heard many stories of that happening because the thick fat layer clogs the wound enough that it’s all but impossible to track the animal because it leaves no blood trail

Great bear Eric, but to take a stab at the question of whether this bear was shot or died in a fight, there was little evidence that I could see around the face to indicate he went down swinging, but still hard to say for sure. Beautiful scenery, good camaraderie, and successful hunt - who could ask for more ?

My first archery deer was a straight on frontal from my knees. Just a little higher hit than your elk, and it went about 40yds.

Action packed footage!!! I think that bear died from a bigger bear 🐻. I’ve found a bear literally ripped to pieces deep in the backcountry and was blown away by it, only thing that could of done that was a bigger bear

Awesome hunt! I’m thinking a hunter got that bear with an arrow but wasn’t able to find it. Big fat fall bears will stop leaking blood fast with all that fat but an internal wound it can’t overcome. I’m hoping however that it died of old age and went peacefully. Cool video of a hunt most of us dream of.
We've had the same experience.... bears rarely leave you a blood trail!

Hard to say on that bear. The woods are harsh and it could have lost a battle or it could have been man. Too bad that beautiful rug couldn't have been salvaged. Great video...

As fired up as some of those bulls were I bet that bear messed with some of their cows and got gored and stomped by a bull!😂 Too bad you couldn’t find him a little earlier and salvaged meat, hide, or skull. Awesome video though, sweet to see a bear and elk video, two of my favorite hunts, in one!

The bear looked like it was more in an open area. I’d be assuming a fight or maybe got into something it shouldn’t have at a campsite and had a poor reaction to it. It definitely didn’t look mangled due to a fight.

We are fairly confident that bull lived to fight another day. Erik bumped into him later and the bull seemed to be fine.

Nice hunt. It is hard to say without a closer look, but I would guess it got sick or something internally from what little I saw it did not look like any animals, besides the bugs of course, were dining on it and might have been staying away because they sensed something was off with it. . If it was just shot, I would venture to say something might have tried to dine on a free meal, but who knows.

Best guess bear was shot. Figure based on the time of hunt and the number of maggots probably been on the ground like two weeks prior to finding it. Although the left side leg looked busted up could be a trap or snare escape.

The bear maybe died by disease... It looked like a mature bear by it's teeth. My second guess is a wound by a hunter.
On the note of the elk, that's a tough break. Swallowing the pill of wounding an elk is hard, but you got to get back up and try to do better.
Yeah, it's tough to say what really happened to that elk! I suppose we will never know. As far as the elk goes - they are super tough and resillent animals. We're confident this bull lived to fight another day.
