My rule is... there is a white line 30cm (12 inches) from each end of the plank. All wheels on the battle bot that touch the plank (all wheels that roll along the plank) need to be behind that line at the start of the battle. Some kids think a long robot might do better, but if any part of their robot (that is still attached to the robot) hits the ground, they lose; so a long robot might be disadvantaged. Another option could be that you just make the rule that the whole robot needs to be behind the line.
