From some reddit guy : it's speculated that a DF can only be awakened if the user's intention match with the intended purpose of fruit, Luffy is a guy who's willing to sacrifices himself for the sake of other people, so when Kaido killed him his fruit attained the awakening stage.

It's mindblowing that back in Skypiea during Noland flashback, Calgara's village was said to worship the Sun God! And when Straw Hats were dancing with the wolves, silhouette of Luffy looked exactly like that of Sun God Nika. Oda said few years ago that Luffy dancing with wolves in Skypiea was his favourite scene in OP & it hinted at Nika. CRAZY foreshadowing! This makes Skypiea even better retrospectively! Sun God was also mentioned during Big Mom's flashback in Elbaf! Peak!
Never skip Skypeia or any arc for that matter.

@@pentheclicketythere's a pretty compelling theory that Long Ring Long Land is connected to Joyboy. It would explain why everything is so... Long. Their shape was changed by the previous user of the Nika fruit. I also am a fan of the idea that when Luffy and Shanks fight, it'll be in the form of a Davy Back fight.
My only minor issue with the Nika reveal is that I think Oda should've hinted the name a bit earlier. The "Sun God" tease in Big Mom's flashback was a good one, but I think Wano is the first time we've ever heard the word Nika. Maybe a scene during Hancock's flashback or Fisher Tiger's where we could've heard the name Nika (but not with any context, of course. Not that early)
@@pentheclicketyin that arc we got to see afro luffy and Davy back fight which can be a major important concept in the future story. And also it has a great comic value, I don't understand the complaints. But that is just me, it my opinion. I have unpopular opinions for my favourite arcs too, my favourite arc being impel down along with marineford and skypiea, at first I loved skypiea just for its comic value and the romanticised story of no land and kalgara,and finally the inscription of Gol D Roger on the golden Bell of shamdora.

It is Luffy's awakening. He just decided to call it "Gear 5". It implied that Joyboy is the previous user of Luffy's devil fruit. It's also possible that Joyboy is a title not someone's name but who know. Well I'm glad you enjoyed the episode😊

Yeah Joyboy was the last person who awakened the Nika fruit….it’s why Zuneisha thought he heard Joyboy when Luffy woke up because the fruit changes the users heartbeat and everything once it’s awakened.

Luffy’s devil fruit is the Human Human Fruit Model: Nika. A Mythical Zoan. Basically the fruit’s ability is limited only to the user’s imagination. The power to turn imagination into reality thus Luffy turning the entire fight around him into a average episode of Tom & Jerry.
No other author could pull this off except Oda. Luffy's imagination has always been his greatest weapon in the way he's manipulated what he thought was only rubber powers, like that time in Cocoyasi's village where he created an attack from his fascination in Genzo's pinwheel. Rubber is only one of his devil fruit's properties, and yet he's gotten this far, I love Luffy!
Theres this theory that because he believes his fruit is a paramecia to him an awakening means being able to fully control rubber and apply it to his surroundings cuz the other paramecia that was awakened that luffy knows is katakuri which does exactly that. And so since his imagination turns into reality this is why he uses the ground as rubber. He can do way more technically if he wanted but his limit right now is the fact that he believes to be an awakened paramecia like katakuri
It hasn't been mentioned anywhere that the fruit's ability is to turn imagination into reality. All we know about it is that the way they fought was literally ridiculous, as in nonsensical. Technically Luffy is still rubber and the awakening lets him affect his surroundings like other awakenings. But the fruit also seems to have other effects like turning cartooney and even affecting other people within the vicinity.
We're still in the process of getting more info about the fruit's full ability besides being rubber. And we know there is more to the fruit since the World Government was hell bent on erasing it from history.
@@fgjah It's been mentioned literally everywhere that Luffy's power is to do whatever he wants. The Gorosei quite literally say that the user of the Hito hito no mi model nika can fight in whatever way they fancy. If Luffy was smart enough to know this then he'd be able to do WAY crazier things than what he's shown, but we know what the Gorosei is true because Luffy literally turns his hair into a pair of goggles/glasses ins his rematch against Lucci.
@@1nnovaI dunno, to say “however he fancies” equates to “literally anything” is kind of a stretch. Especially since the Elders did say his body is just made of rubber. The goggles thing is weird but we’ve seen Paramecia turn buildings into string and generate mochi out of thin air, Luffy’s may be something like that.

I am Japanese. It is said that the original story of the character "Joyboy" that appears in One Piece is the character "Joyboy" that appears in "The Mysterious World of Illusions and Imaginations". It is said that Mr. Oda started drawing "One Piece" when he was in the second year of junior high school (1989, 14 years old). Your commentary at the end hits the nail on the head. It was actually Oda that commented how he came up with Gear 5 being cartoony because he wanted to tone down the seriousness that was starting. Especially because after the Wano arc he plans to make things even darker, but Luffy (and all of the Straw Hats) will obviously bring the fun and laughter in :D

To clear it up, joyboy is someone who awakens the fruit “Human human model nika” and has the ideals of joyboy. That’s why luffy is now the new joyboy
I think it's just an alias/epithet that was given to the last person who awakened the nika fruit because of the effect they had on other people. Zunesha saying joyboy is back is basically because he's associated the drums of liberation with the person they referred to as joyboy, so hearing that again it was as if joyboy is back

That would imply that there has been more joyboys before the joyboy that lived 800 years ago and we don't know that. The theory that joyboy is actually a title is not been confirmed and its not a solid one. Luffy probably inherited joyboy's will and the hito hito no mi model nika [being a zoan] avoided having been found for 800 years until the right moment came to find a new fiting user. Anything else is speculation, time will tell.

Up until this point, Luffy has fought using JUST his Mythological Zoan's passive ability of making his body Rubber.
Now, he is basically FREE to fight HOWEVER HE WANTS.
It's Luffy, but kinda not. Luffy is technically possesed by sun god Nika, but i guess Oda probably didn't want to throw away a character like Luffy, so it's kinda inbetween. It's Luffy and Nika at the same time.

Fun fact, the anime added that part. In the manga Luffy just sort of gets muscles in the middle of spinning Kaido around, I think. The anime added the bit where he tightens his belt to "puff up" his upper body, which is such a cartoony touch that I LOVE it!

To answer a few of your questions. Luffy is basically Joyboy's reincarnation in present day. Joy boy likely had the same fruit when he was Alive. It’s amazing to see how far both Eiichiro oda and toei animation, come with this anime/manga series. From a wannabe pirate floating at the sea in a barrel to fully realized pirate already taking an emperor at the peak of his power. I’m honored to have witnessed it all.

Yep, Shanks actually went there to give it to Ace or at least give it to Roger’s son. But, since the fruit chooses the owner then he knows Luffy is the right person
He probably investigated Roger’s wife Rouge in South Blue and found out that he gave his son to Garp and settled down somewhere in East Blue.

That was so funny and epic! This was the episode that I laughed so much that my lungs are getting hurt!
I was so surprised when I heard the true name of the gomu gomu fruit and I become the Enel's face, but the fight was so funny that the attacks were inspired by the classic cartoons like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. Kaido's shocked face was the scene that I laughed so much.
Also Hiyori was incredible. She was right about it. Even she was hungry and living in the poverty from twenty years, she proudly keep her surname Kouzuki and Orochi was truly a insolent and pathetic scum who doesn't deserved to be entitled as Shogun.
Like in the previous episode, Nami has made Luffy to awaken his devil fruit and make the drums of liberation. Thanks to her, Luffy is alive!

In my own thoughts, 5th Gear maybe has some similarities with Ultra Instinct and the new form makes Luffy look like more than an Emperor.

Oda's original dream when writing OP was to make people smile. He had Gear 5 planned for a long time. And now everyone can't help but smile and laugh along with Luffy. His VA, Mayumi Tanaka, did an amazing job in this episode, giving Luffy such a contagious laughter.

I'm glad you enjoy this episode Jami, especially the "muscle muscle" part:). For me this episode really does make me happy as a manga reader. I've been waiting for gear 5 to be animated and it is worth to wait!! There are some people who don't like this episode because maybe they expect gear 5 to be something epic and vicious, but in fact it's not hahaha. Because funny fights full of laughter will continue to go hand in hand with gear 5.
