Love this video. Love your canned fish videos in general, but being Jewish, I look forward to consuming Gefilte Fish at Passover (and perhaps for a week thereafter) every year. I love the taste in general, but, for sure, mild horseradish is an integral part of the experience. It is an acquired taste, but I'm real glad I acquired the taste for it.
By the way, it is usually served chilled. At least that's how I have experienced it for 70+ years now.

I was so upset thinking you werent gonna have it with horseradish! That is how it is traditionally eaten during passover. By itself it is bland, but it is brought to an entirely new level with horseradish. Really glad you enjoyed it in that way!

I haven't heard the word "Gefilte" in decades. I grew up on Pettys Bayou, Spring Lake, Michigan. The bayou connected to Spring Lake and ultimately Lake Michigan. The bridge (Bowen Bridge) between Pettys and Spring Lake was were they netted "Gefilte" fish (carp) every year.
Once a year a giant tanker truck showed up and a big net was lowered by the bridge. They took what looked like tons of carp and they transported them alive. I asked what they did with them and they told me they were sold to the Jews in Chicago (as I recall). Great video! That horseradish condiment made me mighty hungry.

Yes, it is a way of "stretching" fish, but it's also a way of making carp compatible with the Sabbath. In some religious communities, picking bones is "work" and so eating carp is hard and/or impossible without breaking the rules. Gefilte fish is a way of preparing carp beforehand so you can relax and reflect on family/spiritual matters. Sometimes the meat is carefully removed from the skin such that the meat can be stuffed back into the fish. This is where the word Gefilte comes from, it just means "filled fish" (if it were an English word, we would probably call it "stuffed carp"). I very much like the idea of gefilte fish, but sweet fish products disgust me. I would love a "no sugar added" gefilte fish though.

"Gefilte" is the Yiddish derivative from the German "gefüllt", literally "filled", which in culinary English would be called, "stuffed". Don't warm it up, just add really strong horseradish, preferably red (beet-based). The "real homemade" Gefilte fish takes one day to make and is a lot of work.

We used to eat this with matzo and beetradish. The stock was made less sweet from fishbone stock. My parents and grandparents are from back east and we celebrated passover as a tradition with a bunch of their friends and families that lived in the retirement community that they lived in. They kept the pond/lake stocked with carp and the old folks would fish them out to make the gefilte. They were pretty inventive with their recipes at times because I've had it made with smoked carp and it was less loaf like and more like the consistency of crab cakes.

Hey man you gotta try the Mrs. Adler's line of Gefilte Fish. What you had was basically the main brand of Jewish holidays , which isn't bad at all but you're missing out on all the real ones. The Adler's line has one called the "Special Sweet" Recipe aka the Oldschool style and there's a Pike N' Whitefish one you need to try. Recommend them both cold and maybe have them on a matzah or a cracker. They're legit as hell. Anyways love the videos, was cracking up at the horseradish part and the Mega Man music.

Gefilte fish is traditionally served chilled, with beet horseradish...usually as an appetizer. "Gefilte" is Yiddish for "filled." Homemade gefilte fish is so much better than anything you can get in jars, but it's a great deal of work to make from scratch. My late mother used to make it twice a year, on Passover and the Jewish New Year. I loved watching you enjoy it!

Not sure if you've answered this before, but are you ever going to do more of your other style videos? "In It" and the Todd Snyder Catalog Therapy one are some of my favorites of yours. Not complaining bout all these 'dine vids though. Anything you do is amazing!

I do plan on it. It's what I'd really like to do. The fish thing hit, so I'm going where the wind takes me for now. I guess all those other videos are just not searchable enough. Or people don't realize they want to see something like that until it's right in front of them. My crazy grand plan is to build enough of a subscriber base that I can spin off some new channels and hopefully have them be a success. But I really appreciate your interest in the meantime! Every once in a while, I'll do a rando video just to take the temp for that kind of thing.

I found it at some expensive grocery store. I think it's the name-brand stuff. But I think they must have some version all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if Heniz makes it.

    Has to be home-made.
Also it's supposed to be served cold, and if done properly, the broth will gel due to the collagen from the fish skeleton.
