Suggestion for a video series: God matchups. It's cool to have a tier list, but I'd be interested to understand e.g. why Set is hard for Oranos to deal with. One video for each God, talking about how they match up against every other god, where to find an advantage and how to cover your weaknesses in each matchup.
Imo you should interview each civ's best player on how to play them and the tips theyre gonna give feels like it can make great content and be useful for a lot of people learning a civ 💪
Amazing to see the journey Odin has been on. For the longest time he was the worst civ along with Gaia back in ESO days - this was when Isis was S+ tier, then through the years and different platforms he's climbed the ranks.
From someone who is newly back into AOM since I was a child in the 2000s, it would be cool to see a tier list of the main gods in REGULAR mode. The transition from easy to regular is a big jump and it would be cool to see what gods are best for those in that transition
It would be cool if you give more explanations why a god is bad/good like going deeper into their bonuses, minor God choices, play style, etc. Overall more with working with data
overall, pretty similar list to the pro players list from my video. I think it will be interesting to follow Joe and Kimo and how much succes they have this tourney. I think Isis deserves better than rock bottom. She is very good vs Thor and Odin, and potentially even good vs Hades!
Even if you accept your premis that's 3 gods which Isis has a good match up into. All other civs have more. I also happen to believe Hades hard wins Isis.
Loki has always been powerfull. Back in the days, if played correctly on ESO against 1750+ Isis, you could definitely win… Nowadays it’s great to see it again !
Since the meta seems to have changed up so much in recent months I'd be interested to see an updated tier list for EE as well. With Ra having fallen off so much, is he still top tier in EE where he's much better? Or would Hades have overtaken Ra even there?
I +1 the comment about interviewing each civ's best player(s). I recommend a series with top 3 players or top 5 players for a single civ in each video because then that's content people might end up rewatching for as long as AoM exists.
Yeah if you do a tier list can you please specify if it's voobly or EE. Maybe just in the description? I heard you say it's about the tournament but for someone out of the loop I have no idea if you mean that tournament is on voobly or EE (I usually assume voobly if not mentioned but yeah) I'm only bothering to say this because I love your tier lists so much and want to understand what's going on. Especially the animal tier list.
@@BoitTV That could explain why I feel Eggys are understimated on your video ^^ If you play both variation, a video comparing them would be very exciting.
You should make god guides, talking about their caracteristics and how that reflects on the gameplay... a bit like what Spirit of the Law does for AOE2. Maybe starting with each of the 4 civs, explaining why eggies are good and why they are bad, where you even talk about the units. Then you go for each major god
Hey Bolt, would you consider making a video talking about what buffs/changes/reworks you would like to see to gods that place lower on your tier lists?
So happy that aom is still alive. Is voobly free to play on? And is it possible to play there with a cracked version of aom? Please, I wanna join the community
As an AoM casual, what makes Thor so bad? His access to unit upgrades from the get and strong economy with dwarves seems really good. I kind of get that his exclusive upgrades which he gets super late game aren't going to be viable, though. Why is he so weak? Thor, Loki, Kronos, and Oranos were my gods of choice back in the day. Oranos really just to learn Atlanteans because Kronos was my favorite. I did love Loki and Thor in particular, just that I found Norse generally harder to play.
1. Achilles cost from 350F 0W to 200F 150W (taken over from EE) helps a little against some timing strategies. 2. Hades Shades now affected by Armory upgrades (taken over from EE) makes your lategame even more scary. 3. Gastraphetes cost reduced from 120W 80G to 100W 80G, although they are still pop-inefficient and situational but... 4. *The recent +5% archer movement speed is a gamechanger.* That makes Gastraphetes as fast as Zeus/Poseidon Toxotes (from 3.8 to 4.0) and Hades Toxotes even faster (from 4.0 to 4.2). Toxotes running around *as fast as Hoplites* don't slow down your army anymore and are way harder to catch now because they can retreat more easily. Other than that, people simply overlooked how solid Hades always has been. +10% archer pierce damage is busted, no god can beat that without high losses. Sentinels gp allows you to go all-in with your army and you can't get punished by raids for that, or rush up a TC and defend any timing. +20% building damage and +25% building hitpoints reinforce that even more. ... Now remember that the enemy has to run into you to stop you from reaching your lategame, which is a situation where all your bonuses have maximum effect. So this playstyle is quite easy and reassuring.
The major Hades buffs occurred in 2018, and Hades has been strong since, but it's just taken players a long time to realize it. Even before that, Hades was better than what players thought, but basically every Greek player played Zeus, because Zeus was simply better. Over the course of the Voobly patch, Zeus got nerfed and Hades buffed. Players continued to play Zeus, likely cause it was familiar and players knew what to do with him. Zeus play has slowly fallen off over the past few years, and it really wasn't until last year that a few players started playing Hades and doing well in tournaments. Once those few players had success with Hades, other players suddenly switched as well. Certainly over the past 6 months, Hades has become so much more popular. TL:DR - the reason is that players finally realized Hades is really good, ever since changes back in 2018.
Gods have got different strengths. For example, Zeus has access to Dionysus which has a really strong water mu in Scylla but Hades doesn't. So Zeus would be better on Water maps because of that fact. There's many different things like that which go into certain map layouts being better for different gods. :)
Having bad scouting and weak starter units is a really bad combo for Egyptians, they need to either turtle up or rush heroic age to start harrasing. The exception to this is of course Set, but those strats have only begun to be developed.
Agreed. Dont forget, the laborers have worse gather rates unless empowered by the only useful hero. So it’s either use your best and useful (also weak) hero on eco or use it to either scout or harass. For a civ to rely so heavily on one resource is also a weakness, simply gold starve and or block the gold….
Also can someone explain to me why this tier list for this tournament looks so different from other lists? It was my impression that eggy is the best even in voobly but now an eggy is bottom tier. Was there a recent voobly patch?
Ladder play when you don't know your opponent or map is much different from tournament play where the opposite is true. So while Zeus is a great choice for ladder due to never really having a bad matchup, in tournament play, Zeus mains will not be seeing the spread of gods they normally do, mostly hitting his matchups thus bumping him down a bit. Basically gods with the least severe weaknesses do the best in tournament because players can swap off the god to counter the god being used against them easier.
Does Thor have no potential for a better boom? I figure that in the very late game he's one of the best gods because he has unique extra armory upgrades which gives him the theoretical strongest Ragnarok in the game.
Odin just does everything better than Thor imo. Perhaps Thor is stronger than Odin in the hyper late game but if you are playing Norse for the late game I don't think you are really playing it right hehe.
You can take a look at Boit's video "God Tier list EE edition" where he highlights differences between voobly and steam. But keep in mind that there are two criteria for tier lists: How good are your chances in ranked where you face random gods on random maps (old tier list) vs how good are you chances if you know the matchup beforehand (this tier list).
I don't like how you make it sound like age of mythology is rock paper scissors in which some gods counter others and you are screwed if the opponent picks a god that's strong against you
Strong early and late game, courtesy of being Greek. Extremely hard to kill, with the stronger buildings and archers, Restoration, and shades. Not overly reliant on any specific thing, so he's hard to counter. You're almost never at a disadvantage as Hades, and lategame he's easily the strongest god, so even if you can't get ahead, you'll win eventually as long as you don't die, which is exactly what Hades is good at, not dying.
After playing this game since I was 7 It makes me so happy to see a healthy AOM community nowadays

Yesssssss I was really thinking it would be awesome if Boit did one with the current meta, thank you!!!
Hades and Loki turned the tables in a year!
Super interesting to see how meta changes based on maps and playerbase... poseidon over Zeus was unexpected to say the very least
With AoM retold coming out for console, and my 2010 ass laptop being trash, im diggin the content ive never seen before on youtube

It's so wild to see Isis so low down when I think back of when we didn't have fan balance patches. Back when 1.07 was the latest and last update.
