I started using wifi in 2008 or 9 I think. My first 'smartphone'. I was 45.

I totally agree with the point of just having your cell phone connected on shorter cruises. For most of my cruises though, we'll have two days at sea, so I usually like to be connected to ship w-fi for at least that window. This means I'll pay about $40 for 1 day of wi-fi, rather than $200 to be online constantly - a 'WIN' in my mind!
I have to have internet (dogs, family member w/ health issues, etc.) but this is great advice for anyone who doesn't need to be connected 24/7.
good advice, I like to disconnect on a cruise so I stay off the WiFi.
I am disconnecting this cruise as well. I need a break from UA-cam, Facebook groups, and all the other people that feel the need to constantly 'keep in touch'. I will take pics and videos and deal with all that after I get home!!!

I am doing a 7 day Canada/New England cruise, not getting wifi. seeing how cheap I can go.
I was on ac ship and there was a BIG emergency ( bro offed himself), which was already over and I couldn't do anything.
They called me on the ship. On the second call , I told them not call, id see them when I got back. the next year, I told them don't even call in case of a nuclear attack and I didn't tell anyone where I was going. If I can't do anything, don't call. I'll see when I get back at home.

Went on a Caribbean Cruise recently that I couldn’t believe that I could get on the terminal wifi! When I told some of the crew they were ecstatic!
I have a text and talk plan, but the voice was only $0.20 a minute in several locations. I think my total bill was $3.60 as I mostly need to check in because of some issues about a funeral at home. Also ended up needing to talk to my travel agent which I did for MSCs island at the same $0.20.
It would cost me an additional $35-$40 a month to avoid that $3.60 charge.
While I understand that many can’t exist without data plans we aren’t where we could use one enough to make it cost effective.
First of all, I don't cruise just weekends, I'm all in for a week or two...it's fabulous!
But I've always wondered about the Wifi. It seems, on every single cruise, we're barely sailing away from Port Everglades, still in spitting distance and I swear they scramble the signal because I can't text a pic of our cabin until after the entire cruise! Even when we're in port somewhere and I get texts from Spectrum Mobile, welcome to Jamaica! welcome to Netherlands Antilles! Welcome to the Bahamas! They all say Free SMS but I still can't text... drives me nuts!

when we sailed NCL, we had 350 minutes free wifi per guest, so it was easy to log on check what was needed and log off. Being on the app's WIFI, we found we almost alway received texts through the app, and was no charge.
Msc is weird with their Wi-Fi. Somehow, they allow certain notifications to come through that you have messages. Sometimes I can see them. Sometimes I cannot and can definitely not reply to them. I think it's a way of showing you what you're missing and incentivizing you to buy the plan.

I honestly have not found a single downside with Google fi. I honestly love it and can't imagine traveling as much as I do without it.
what towers do Google Fi operate from? I am thinking about switching to something that is more travel friendly. I have verizon now. Canada and Mexico are on my plan, but that is it.
I've had great luck in both Canada and Mexico. They operate on T-Mobile towers

I have not tried Carnival since 2009! I would do it one of these days, nothing against them. I'm just really comfortable with the four cruise lines that I'm doing right now.

Only on Royal Caribbean I get one device. I do not get it free anywhere else.
If the cruise lines were smart they would give everyone free wifi and drinks in the Casino!
