  • You know how magical Christmas time is when you're a kid but as you grow and start to form your own beliefs sometimes it's like...eh, what's the point in this again?! For me, getting my finances in order and building generational wealth is super important. I want to not only give my kids more as a single mom but allow them to have the experiences I did not. So, I decided no more buying Christmas gifts. It just doesn't fit into my budget nor my lifestyle anymore.

We celebrate Kwanzaa now and one of the principles: Ujima, focuses on collective work and responsibility. Each year for that day, we focus on giving back to the community. Last year, we made blessing bags for a women’s shelter and this year we did a smaller donation.

We volunteer during the holiday season and it absolutely brings you back to the core of what this season is about. In addition, I literally bought my kids one gift each under $50 and they loved the gifts. I am not buying all of that stuff and we try to focus on family, friends, love and Jesus!

To all the parents who couldn’t afford for your children, it’s ok. Your kids still love you anyway. And for the future, if you want to buy gifts for your children start a savings fund for Christmas. Set a reasonable amount for you and save throughout the year.

@@dickersonr6172 my little at the time was a mature 7 yr old and she asked me why I was so sad about Christmas… in actuality I was stressed about trying to make it happen…when I told her that I just wanted to get her all of these things but couldn’t make it happen she looked at me and said mommy that’s ok. It was than I decided to have a conversation about time and memories together, rather having things of little to no value (she wasn’t big on toys) and she has always even heavy on spending time together. I still do Christmas gifts, but I was able to save money by using gift cards I received from my job throughout the year to give to family and friends. I hear you!! I stopped giving gifts for Christmas several years ago. I informed my family members and close friends that Christmas had become too commercialized and I did not want to participate in it. Additionally, I used to stress so much about which gifts to select and affordability. Now, the freedom and peace of mind I experience during the holidays are priceless. Plus, I’m not spending unnecessarily. It was a wonderful decision. There are some people in my life who still choose to give me gifts, which can feel awkward because I then feel like I SHOULD give a gift in return. At times I do, but a ‘thank you’ card or another gesture of gratitude is my typical default. Praying for your journey & wishing you well!

at this time, i do not have any children. However, my husband's family is quite large with the expectation of buying each family member one gift. This year i just couldn't afford that, so i didn't buy anyone anything. It was disappointing for some, but i truly am happy with my decision. I am focusing on myself, my finacial goals, and paying off my debts. This 2024 year will be my first "no buy" year, and i am so excited. Go you! Saving for life experiences will mean so much more to your children than a toy off a shelf.

I have never celebrated Christmas. Throughout the year I do nice things for my family and others. Recently I started engaging in social activities with my granddaughter that are free. It’s amazing how much more she enjoys those activities than gifts that don’t even last. I am a firm believer of doing things throughout the year. We don’t need to wait on one day to be kind and loving. Actually, I don’t do holidays of any kind including Mother’s Day or birthdays 😂😂😂. No one expects anything from me on a holiday but they do know that throughout the year they will be blessed by me.

If you think about it, possibly you are also placing those expectations on yourself because you may feel others will be angry with you or not like you if you don't act according to societal norms. Determine what works best for you, set boundaries and stick to them. After a while no one will care.

Omg totally! The holidays don’t feel the same the older we get. It did not feel like Christmas this year. And it’s been like his for me for years but it gets less and less important to me the older I get.
I only got a tree for my kids and a few little gifts like journals and drawing notebooks water bottles etc (little things)for my kids, they only care about online games.
I got slippers for my mom stepdad and grandmother.
    That’s it
I stopped buying gifts for everyone years ago!
I don’t think i even gave my immediate family anything last year.
I didn’t partake at the work secret Santa this year
    I’m just exhausted
We have such similar lives. Single lady paying a house by myself, two kids, full time work, $10k cc debt from buying the house needing to fix things etc
I just started my own channel (trying to get that monetized status for extra income! It may take years but I won’t give up! This economy is not single mom friendly!)
Oh, and try Utah instead of aspen! Never been to either but I’ve been to Colorado and i heard from a lot of people that Utah is a great snowy skiing type place for vacation for way less

For the last few years, I just exchange gifts with my immediate family for Christmas (I don't have kids). We usually set a limit on gifts (e.g., max $50/gift or person) and the gifts we give are practical. For example, I got some socks and underwear along with some fun bedding. Much less stress and consumption.

We were always tight on money, so Christmas has always been campy and fun. I got a bunch of hand me down decorations from yard sales. Christmas cards are affordable for the adults, and gifts only for the kids. One or two $15 gifts for the kids of something they really want, plus a stocking with things like candy are enough, and it doesn't have to go on a credit card. Only for the kids, and that keeps it affordable. Christmas has become way too secular and commercial, but I still love the holiday and celebrate it my frugal way. Christmas music and specials are free, community events are free, and church services are beautiful. Getting together, watching the kids open their cheap gifts and sharing a meal is a good time without a huge bill!

I agree with the no gifts. I told people that i was not gift shopping this year so dont buy my daughter anything shes fine. Ya know they still bought and was expecting so I broke and went out and bought gifts. However I am very sorry for them in 2024. I am sticking to my guns and there is absoloutely no gift buying.

I have raised three girls as a single parent and I never did Christmas. My children father did but I didn’t .. I just Feeley that I can buy my kids what they without having a special day. And if it was a heavy bill month it then they wanted for a better budget month. Don’t get me wrong my daughters are very spoiled but I am a type of person that if I need to get you something because I know you would love it and it’s on my budget. I got it right then and be jumping up and down for you to open your gift… it might not be your birthday … it could be I had a good day that day or you are upset and I want you to smile

They didn’t care too much honestly, as long as we were able to go to my dads where their cousins were

I think she said in a previous video she “cancel” Xmas before, maybe cuz of her son medical needs. Can’t remember Y. And she told them she wasn’t buying them nothing so it wasn’t a surprise.
