Growly baby opossums
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лип 2015
- Baby opossums in the same litter can have very different personalities - some may be calm and curious when handled while others may freeze or play dead. This litter was old enough when they were orphaned that some of them were suspicious of humans - and these two have always been particularly growly and aggressive. Handling is kept to a minimum so they do not become tame and can be successfully released back into the wild - in this case I was transferring them to another container so I could clean their larger cage. Fast movements would probably have resulted in a bite - painful even at this age - but by going very slowly and approaching from behind/above they reverted to freezing rather than attacking.

I like how as soon as it's placed in the box with its siblings, it immediately calms down because it realizes the human didn't hurt its siblings or take them away forever and everything is okay.
I kinda wish that box was a little bigger for them.
It could be an exercise to make them trust you more. Possums are smart enough to tell that you’re a different creature than them and might mean them harm, so by grabbing each one and putting them safely with their siblings they realize you’re not going to hurt any of them

One was playing dead after being picked up.
Opossums are actually not very likely to bite you at all. They typically only attack once they’ve been attacked and will almost always try the death tactic before anything else. They deserve more love. ❤
They don't actually "try" playing dead. It's an involuntary startle reaction to being attacked. In all my trail cam videos and watching them in person I've never seen one do it. When I find a dead opossum I usually wait a few hours before burying it just to make sure though.

They are innocent creatures that are harmless and only growl and drool in hopes of scaring away their predators. They mean no harm and protect us from lyme disease. Please ignore these harmless marsupials who actually benefit and protect us. lets practice what we preach and dont harm them just because they are ugly.
We get a lot of them in our garage. We tend to live trap them and release them safely deeper into the woods (so long as they are adults. Thankfully no babies yet.).
I have encountered a BIG female before and she growled, hissed, opened her mouth, and drooled to look all sorts of intimidating but I actually pet her despite all that and she never attacked me or even tried.
Thank you mam and God bless you. I wish that many people would think like you but i guess thats not possible. When i have asked some people why they kill them or harm them their first response is well because they are ugly. Little do they know these are probably some of the most harmless and docile marsupials that one can ever encounter. I wish God would at least provide them with some other defense mechanism to help protect them. They are more scared than scary...
Yeah... Sadly people do not like their naked tail or their sort of scruffy fur too much. Poor things seize up and play dead even if they do not want to from fright. I guess I am just the sort who does not like hurting things and I really really hate Ticks and these guys eat them quite a bit. I would much rather have lots of Opossums around than a bunch of ticks.
I have been told by people who kill the poor things that they were scared of them and I always try to tell them that they won't hurt anyone. I do not know many other wild animals you can actually pick up or touch safely but Opossums are generally so non-aggressive you can do it with them. Sort of like Armadillos.
There has yet to be a verified story of a possum killing any living creature just for fun. I go out of my way to protect these kind and gentle marsupials. I once picked up a medium sized one and all he did was hiss, growl, and showed of its pointy teeth without ever attempting to bite or harm me. When i placed him on the ground he ran away from me as fast as he could. To everyone out there please spread the word..these kind and noble marsupials mean no harm to anyone or anything. On the other hand they protect us from lyme disease. God bless

I live in south Georgia and we've had wild opossums get so used to eating from our cats dishes that they don't even flinch when you walk up on them. They just smile real big n show you their pretty needle teeth that they wouldn't bite you with, if their life depended on it lol
Their dentition is properly horrific but their intent is totally not that. I love _Didelphis virginiana_ forever. They are right up there with Eastern Hognosed Snakes in the "wonderfully harmless bluffing at being fierce" animals, in my ledger.
Amen. I have one I call Pete who lives under my shed.
@@HayTatsuko I don't think your average mouse would call a Hognose "harmless," but I get where you're coming from.
Just an FYI: too much cat food is extremely harmful to opossums. Cats are obligate carnivores so food made for them is essentially nothing by protein, fat and the nutrients you get from eating meat. Opossums are omnivores and naturally eat a much wider variety of foods. If an opossum eats too much cat food too often they'll develop metabolic bone disease, a deficiency of calcium and phosphorus that results in their bones becoming soft. Sadly, it's often fatal.
I'm not saying you killed (or even harmed) those opossums and I'm certainly not saying you shouldn't give food to wild animals. I have an old barn where a bunch of raccoons, skunks, and opossums live and/or hang out at, and I put food out for them every night. Seeing them in person and getting footage of them on trail cams is a wonderful time. In the future maybe just make sure the opossums (and any other omnivore that drops by) doesn't eat too much cat food. Personally when I give them pet food I mix dog food with cat food in 3:1 ratio. That way they get the cat food they love with something that's more appropriate for their dietary needs. If you want opossums to get their calcium they also love cheese and yogurt.
I call this one “Bitey”. And that one “Bitey II”, and there’s “Biteys III, IV and V”... etc.

I don't like hand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating - and it gets everywhere.
They make a nice quiet pet when you raise them. Even wild ones are easily tamed with just getting used to you. They're a little weird, as pets super sedate and nice. Clean and like to cuddle and be petted.
they also will walk down the street with you if they really like you. Mine before old age kicked in used to walk up and down the street with me. Chased me at full speed running every now and then. Kitty litter trained. Lots of work and attention, so I wouldnt recommend for most... lots of work if you want to give them a good life. Oh and park trips to run in field LOL
I have one i pulled off the teat of her dead mother...she is the lover of the group...the other two girls are nearly as sweet but were found in dangerous conditions and have adapted to my constant cuddling and petting and hugging on them...i love them all...also acquired a blind male adult who is rapidly becoming quite the sweetheart...i wouldnt trade any of them for the world...amazing creatures and great additions to the family...however, dietary needs are very important and if not considered they will get sick and die...also they need attention and to run the house each day or they will die as well...since they are latrine animals, litter box training is a breeze...they like to pee and poop in the same spot...
randy s no they weren't they were never even brought in large amounts to europe.
This is nice and all but wild animals really shouldn't be kept as pets just because we think they look nice/make nice pets. It's one thing if they're rescued and unable to be released into the wild etc, but realistically most should be released into the wild. They aren't pets.

I rescued one of these little creatures early this summer, a neighbor was doing heavy yard work and must have spooked him out of his hiding place and into our yard, where he was sitting in the middle of the lawn in the bright sunlight. I tried shooing him into a dark bed of ivy at the side of my lawn, but he kept coming back out for some reason. Afraid a hawk or feral cat would get him, I decided to take him to our local wildlife rescue. He hissed and growled at me, and showed me all his teeth, just like a big opossum would do. So cute. It bothers me when people talk badly about these animals, they aren’t mean or vicious. They are gentle, non aggressive animals...it’s all for show, the hissing and growling.
