I have them in our area. One spent a couple of days in the winter sunning itself on the pine tree. I gently approached and was so close to it, about 10 ft. I was able to get pics. He looked right at me and did not seem concerned. I must have stood there 15 minutes just watching him. I hear them frequently calling each other. I absolutely adore them.
Barred Owls are my favorite species of owl. Making eye contact with one is an enchanting life experience. I have seen them quite a few times and even photographed them around the cypress swamps of Croatan NF, North Carolina. Thank you Cornell for making this footage available to us bird junkies :)
I love this! We have tall woods behind us, and have had a pair of barred owls calling to each other throughout the Spring and Summer. In early summer, I heard a juvenile barred owl as I walked my dog one evening. He flew and landed in a tree just 10 feet from me, about 20 feet up. It was amazing. Thanks to the Merlin app, I could listen to the many different sounds they make...which is how I knew this one was a juvenile. They're such fascinating birds!
We also managed to get some photos of them. We had watched two owls work together somehow, swooping in and around an area of trees, until one of them caught something. We managed to get a photo of the owl with his/her prey in his talons, as he at it on a big bough.
Thank you so much, I was able to re live that great experience in watching these owlets grow up...I am so amazed at how they raise their young! I wish the 3 owlets a successful first year!! I love these owls too!
Love it! I don’t know if you have time for it but I’d love to see a longer, more in-depth 2020 summary of these guys. Thanks for this one though! I enjoyed the season and this summary! Looking forward to next year.
Thanks for the laugh. I guess your cat is too well fed. I had two cats and a mouse got into the house. I got the thing cornered and put one of my cats down near it - you could almost hear her say "eek, a mouse". It eventually found its way outside. Be well and stay safe.
Thank you so much for another awesome season of video footage. What an devoted couple these guys continue to be. Can’t wait for next year. Again, thank you!!
Thanks for this really informative video. Nature really is amazing and these babies grew up so quickly. I pray they will live a full and successful life. Be well and stay safe.
Enjoyed this look back at a very successful year for these special birds, made all the more enjoyable by excellent commentary and screenshots/videos by the Cornell staff. Thank you!
I've gotten to watch this process in my back yard for the past four years. But I didn't know exactly how long the eggs took to hatch and what happened before the chicks came out. They usually 'branch' in the yard for about a week before they leave for the woods behind our house, and I still see them sometimes.
How awesome, I just love barred owls. I'm watching another one nesting in Georgia, if anyone's looking for a new one to watch - Sophie's Backyard Wildlife, awesome footage
Are there instructions somewhere on how to build a nesting box? We have a pair of adults and would love to provide them with a box. They probably have a natural cavity somewhere...but we'd like to make a box so we can know where they are (should they choose to use it)!
Can you please comment on what camera setup you use? After 6 years of Barred owlets being raised on our property, the snag they nested in succumbed to gravity. I'd like to build a nesting box for a tree nearby and add a camera so we can watch without disturbing them. Thank you!

What a great pair of loving, attentive parents! This brood of owlets are beautiful! Thanks for the close up, detailed footage.
Thank you for your devotion to all these beautiful birds. I can't wait until next season.
Barred Owl Cam is always a highlight and this was a happy reminder of all that transpired for them this year. Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic footage. That owl is a much better mouse catcher than my cat!

Owls have to catch mice to eat. Cats do it more for play. Owls do catch and eat more mice than cats.

I saw my first Barred Owl in New Jersey while fishing last weekend. Such a cool experience.
Very nice birdhouse. Thank you for helping nature
What a delight and learning adventure to see this owl journey. Thanks.
I also have a cam in a Barred Owl nesting box near our house for the past 17 years. Feeding time is the most interesting.
Thank you! After watching and obsessing about them all spring, it was wonderful to see them again. I second the comment below: more, more, more!
Thank you for letting us experience this wonder. I can't wait until next year!
Wow, that was amazing to watch. Thanks.
Amazing to watch, thank you
The parents did an excellent job feeding the owlets

I love this kind of owl
Amazing journey 😊
Amo este nido y los sonidos tan relajantes de ese patio trasero.
Whoa, I never knew owls ate squirrels.
what a smorgasbord!
Fantástico vídeo. ..👏👏👏
It would great if you would post where to buy Owl nesting boxes.
Will this go live again soon?

Search on the Cornell Ornithology site. There is a plan there. You can also do a google search to find more in-depth instructions.
Check out this resource from the Cornell Lab's NestWatch program for plans: nestwatch.org/learn/all-about-birdhouses/birds/barred-owl/

Sure! Email us at birdcams@cornell.edu for information about our cams.
So it's the "barred owl" and not the "WBU barred" that cam (maybe because that cam was interfering some natural processes.)
