Tarquinii was one of the most ancient and important Etruscan cities.
Lucius Tarquinius Priscus and Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, became kings of ancient Rome. Numerous Roman religious rites and ceremonies derived from Tarchuna.
In 509 BC, after the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, the family of Tarquinius Superbus went into exile in Caere. He sought to regain the throne by force of arms. He convinced the cities of Tarchuna and Veii to support him and led their armies against Rome in the Battle of Silva Arsia. The Roman army was victorious however.
At the end of the 5th century and during the first half of the 4th century BC a brief revival took place, under the ascendancy of the Spurinna family, prominent up to the 1st century AD.
In this period colossal walls were built around the city in response to threats from the Celts and Rome. Tarchuna, not affected by Celtic invasions, finally colonised all its previously held territories in about 385 BC. This new flourishing state allowed a rapid recovery of all activities.
However, during the 4th century BC when Tarchuna's expansion was at its peak, a bitter struggle with Rome took place. In 358 BC, the citizens of Tarchuna captured and put to death 307 Roman soldiers; the resulting war ended in 351 BC with roman victory.
𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚
When Tarchuna came under Roman domination is uncertain; in 181 BC its port, Graviscae (modern Porto Clementino) became a Roman colonia that exported wine and had coral fisheries. Little is known about Tarquinii in Roman times.
𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕-𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒓𝒂
The ancient city had shrunk to a small fortified settlement during the early Middle Ages while the more strategically placed Corneto (possibly the "Corito" mentioned in Roman sources) grew progressively to become the major city. The last historic references to Tarquinii are from around 1250, and the last remains were destroyed in 1305.
The name of Corneto was changed to Tarquinia in 1922.

Thanks for taking me back to Tarquinia!
I walked down so many of those streets. The panoramas there are incredible.
Glad you enjoyed it Michael, I have good memories of that day in Tarquinia, quite long ago... beautiful city indeed

Noi discendiamo dagli Etruschi. Non dai Romani. Gli Etruschi sono una popolazione autoctona!!
Verissimo Nadia...
Obrigado Linda! Bom dia i tenha um bom fim de semana!

Thank you Dear Isadora!
Te felicito!! Maravilloso Italia la amo!!! Gracias! Desde Argentina besos
Gracias a ti Graciela!
Riccardo

Thanks
It was fun to walk together.
thanks
Can you do some walking tour from Nettuno, please? Thank you. :)
Gabri I hope to visit also Nettuno this spring / summer 🤞 Now easier to travel for sure
Please shorten the captions and show them a bit longer
Great tips 👍 I'll make them shorter and longer in time'. Thanks for the suggestion, as it helps me in improving
Wow very beautiful old town. Thank you for your share. Have a nice day. Greetings from Germany.
Danke freund
I never. Heard of Tarquinia before, where is located? It looks very interesting.
Indeed Hernan, it's a very beautiful town/city (rather large in fact). Etruscan in its history. It's about 100 kms from Rome, or 1 1/2 hour by car.
All that area around Viterbo is stunning...!
I'm from tarquinia, sta vicino roma

Every person was wearing a mask outdoors. Have you noticed if some cities or regions are more strict about this?
Hi Fjordavy, it's a national law for the time being :/ basically it's very similar I must say (though I didn't go very far lately unfortunatelt :(), we're all hoping it'll back to normality before the summer seasons... fingers crossed though

Hi Dominik, it's in the center!
