(Picking 144) How to decode most combination bike locks - Indirect Method!

- The most reliable method to decode / pick / crack most bike locks is the "Indirect" method. It may not be the fastest method, but it's the most reliable one. It even works on some that have false gates.
Method:::
With this method, it's important to have constant strong tension while testing the wheels.
First of all, put all the numbers to zero on each wheel.
We will start with the wheel on the right (when numbers are oriented the correct way).
Let's call that wheel number 5 (ie wheel-5).
Tension the lock while at the same time turning wheel-4 back and forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn. Make sure to put wheel-4 back to zero.
Turn wheel-5 to the number 1.
Now tension the lock again while at the same time turning wheel-4 back & forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn.
Then turn wheel-5 to the number 2.
Test wheel-4 again...
Do this until you've tested all the numbers on wheel-5 (from 0 to 9) and take note which number on wheel-5 makes wheel-4 tough to turn. That is the correct number on wheel-5. Leave wheel-5 on that number.
Then repeat the process but leave wheel-5 alone (leave it on its correct number). This time we turn wheel-4 from 0 to 9, testing each time on wheel-3.
The number on wheel-4 that makes wheel-3 toughest to turn is the correct number for wheel-4.
Do the same for each wheel until you've got the correct numbers for wheel-5, 4, 3 and 2.
Now turn wheel 1 all the way around while tensioning the lock until it opens.
When I say "tension", I mean pull the lock at both ends as if you're trying to pull it open.

By the time I got to 5:27 while working on my first lock I got it open. So glad I found this as I run a bike rental business and will no longer have to cut locks when codes get accidentally changed! Thank you!

I recently bought a bike off someone on ebay that had a cheap looking 4-wheel combination lock wrapped around the frame when I got it so thought I'd try and crack it rather than cut it off and tried various methods I found online but this one was what did it for me. Thanks muchly :)

I certainly agree that this is the most reliable method. I just spent the last few hours trying to open a combination lock for my bike that I forgot. I tried all the other "direct" methods and variations thereof that I ran into in UA-cam search. They all failed. I couldn't get the feedback they claimed I would have no matter how much I tried. In the end, this "Indirect" method was the only one that worked, and I suspect it would work on the broadest range of combination locks. Thank you!

I was so devestated when i my combination got changed all of a sudden i went to many shops to get it fixed but they couldnt do it and i tries everything, every trick i could find that my country has to offer. Finally a method that works. Funny now that I'm able to use my lock again I'm throwing it away because I realized how easy it is.
Well done for getting it open! LOL yea part of why I do these videos is to show people that combination bike locks aren't that secure. Do note however that most thieves don't decode combination bike locks, but instead most will cut the lock / cable etc (whether it be a combination lock or not). I would recommend a lock with a nice thick cable & shackle and one that is also a well known named brand. If you buy a cheap no-name brand then you are in danger because they use soft metal even though they may say hardened steel. A well known brand will actually use hardened steel.
I recommend paying 10% to 15% of what your bike is worth on a bike lock.
Again well done for decoding your lock!

@@shubhankarvarade3936 Try and vary your tension (pulling the lock as if trying to pull it open) and see what tension works best. If you don't get the 1st wheel right, the next wheel will be impossible. Watch the video a few times.

This is the third video I have tried. I have blisters from trying and trying and failing. After watching this, I opened my lock in under a minute on the first try! I was about to get the cut-off wheel out and destroy the lock. Thanks!

Thanks. Helped a lot. I figured out a faster way to do the last 2 numbers. Once you have the first 3 numbers, just set each of the 10 numbers of the second rung one at a time while applying tension, and just scroll through the 1st bar numbers really fast until it pulls open. It's going to likely be faster and doesn't require the feel.

Yes! I did it this way but luckily only had to deal with four digits. Wasn't even sure if the first two were correct and was mostly just winging it, but it popped open!

A fixer reseted my lock while the other dude was fixing my bike. And the rude man who reseted my lock wouldn’t tell me the combination, kept insisting “I didn’t do nothing”. But thanks to your video it saved me a ton of hastle! The combo was 08810.

This is the best tutorial I have seen. I think my hands/fingers are too small for this and it’s such a bummer; I can’t seem to tension and twist at the same time. I will get this forgotten lock off one way or another! Thank you!

Got given a muddyfox combi lock no clue of numbers used this method and had opened within 5 minutes used other methods that didn’t work this is the best

THIS ACTUALLY WORKS! I forgot to look at my combination when I put it around my bike and so I had to pick the lock! This is much easier with a friend but still a very effective method!

@@Swynndla She pulled both sides apart while I checked the numbers. We (mostly me) are both weak so we took turns at each job, cheeking the numbers or keeping the tension on the lock.

Yea partly I do these videos to show how someone can recover their lost combination, and partly to educate people that combination bike locks aren't that secure. If someone has an expensive bike, I would recommend spending the money on a (named brand) key lock with a thick cable ... yea it's a hassle carrying around a key, but at least it's more secure. It's interesting that some bike locks do have false gates, and check out my video 61 where it's a very high quality bike lock with seemingly false gates on every number, where I found that the correct gate on the first wheel would bind not only the next wheels, but *all* the wheels ... and since the next wheel so so tough to turn on *any* number it was impossible for me to find out if the next wheel was tougher on the correct gate, but I managed to test the wheels further down. It's a little bit like how you where testing the tightness of the last wheel in the method you found. Then in my video 88 I found a much quicker way, from a suggestion from one of my viewers 😜😜
Was able to use this method on a Masterlock cable combination- 8119DPFAU that my workmate forgot the code to, they seemed to be on the higher price range so wasn’t sure it would work but thought I’d give a go for fun anyways having never “picked” a lock before.
After researching & perfecting the technique for an afternoon to get the tension right & get a feel for it it took no more than a couple hours as a beginner..
Further inspection their were 2 false gates on each wheel but nonetheless was still able to be cracked relatively easy (minus the raw fingers from tightly turning the wheel 😂) I got the first 3 turning & checking the next number then brute force for the last number.

Thanks a lot mate. Last night I got bit drunk and messed with my combination, and then proceeded to immediately forget what I set it to. Using this method I managed to get about halfway through, then I just brute forced my way to the end. My lock looks quite similar to yours, but it only has 4 digits so it was relatively quick.

any tips for opening a master lock 8220D? it seems to have a prevention for this method by making the wheels nearly unturnable when under tension. thumbs are aching after just 10 minutes...
This method works on a lot of combination bike locks, but certainly not all. There are several other methods to try, but I don't have a master lock 8220D so I don't know which one (if any) will work. You could try and decode it like this: ua-cam.com/video/pSY3eJzM_p8/v-deo.html ... or if that doesn't work for you then you could try some of the other methods I talk about in my videos: ua-cam.com/users/Swynndlavideos ... look at the ones that look like bike locks, as I describe some other methods like the "wiggle" method etc. I would also recommend wearing gloves, and take lots of rest as yes you will get sore fingers. If you can find a "wiggle" method that works then it requires very little (and sometimes no) tension but I have no idea if your lock will be susceptible to that type of attack. Good luck!
