Spencer was almost unbeatable on this machine , it had that much traction out of corners you could literally see the rubber being laid down. In my opinion the best 2stroke GP 500 , ever built.
Always loved this 1st Gen 4 cyl. Honda, and the best version of HRC Red,White & Blue with the Yellow number panels on the lower fairing it looks great !!! It's amazing today my GSXR SBK makes 40+ more HP today !!! And thank god I don't have to ride a bike with maybe a 3000 rpm power band like older 500cc bikes, those guys were Giants in every way !!!!!
You know that Honda were at their wit's end trying to fix the awful handling when they swapped the exhausts and fuel tank around. Brilliant " thinking outside the box", but ultimately futile if memory serves.

サイレンサーの位置に合わせたカラーリングとテールカウルのデザインが最高だ。
1984年型NSR500。水冷2ストロークV型4気筒499cc。最高出力140馬力以上。
重量の軽いチャンバーをエンジン上部(本来の燃料タンクの位置)に配置し、(燃料込みで)重たい燃料タンクをエンジン下部に配置して車両の低重心化を目指す。そしてカーボンファイバー製のホイールで更に軽量化。
HONDAらしさ全開の野心あふれるマシンでしたね。
ライダーは基本的にフレディ・スペンサーただ一人。
第一戦の南アGPの予選でカーボンファイバー製のリア・ホイールが砕けて転倒してライダー(F･スペンサー)が骨盤骨折の大怪我。
以降、ホイールは旧式NS500と同仕様のスチール製に変更。
低重心化のためのエンジン下部の燃料タンクは消費される燃料のため徐々に軽くなり、かえって重量バランスが悪化。また、エンジン上部チャンバーの熱がライダーに伝わり無駄に体力を消耗させるという本末転倒な結果となってしまった。
結局、F･スペンサーはサーキットの性格に併せてNS500とNSR500を使い分けてシーズンを戦うことを余儀なくされ、チャンピオンを逃してしまう。
でも、浪漫溢れるマシンです。

デザインとしては、過去のGPマシンでも１番好きなんだけどな。
レース中にリアホイールが突然割れてスペンサーが怪我したり、胸元にあるチャンバーの熱でライダーは熱くて大変だったらしい。
とんだ喰わせ物でしたね。

The start-up showed surprising docile qualities. Pure rocket qualities on the track!

乗りこなせなかったのではなく、その特異な車体レイアウト故の
問題点を開発の段階で見抜けなかった事が、フレディが乗る事で
露呈したんです。
84年の初戦では「カーボンコムスターホイール」が割れて転倒もしてます。
あたかもフレディが乗りこなせなかったかの様な説明は事実に反します。

大失敗作ですな 呆れたライダーは3気筒の前年型NS500にスイッチして出場する事もしばしばあった
でも当時のホンダはそれで黙ってはいなかったし黙って「負け」を簡単に認める様な体質じゃ無かったのが現在のホンダと明らかに違うところなのではなかろうか？
