To think, few if any of those people would believe that within 20 there would be some semblance of lasting peace. Knowing what's coming, not only for the workers but for his children, this is SO sad.
I sometimes wonder if John D should have stayed at GM. Starting a car factory from scratch is a mind blowing endeavor rife with problems. I admire his vision however even though it seemed doomed from the beginning.
Too bad they didn't use the Alfa Romeo V6 or a turbo 4 from SAAB maybe. That PRV engine was the biggest thorn in their side when it came to having a wider appeal and being taken seriously as a performance car. The smartest thing would have been to use the British government connection to get the Rover aluminum V8, maybe they could have used the Iceberg crankshaft, making a 4.4L like the short lived Australian iteration. Maybe they could have bought higher performance pieces like cylinder heads or camshafts designed by TVR.
Fascinating, partly as the margin of failure wasnt that big, it could have worked with such a great design. Delorean no different to most entrepreneurs in chronically underestimating the cash burn in such a start up.
He was before his time in terms of market. He had a poor team around him....and lack of talent working under his wing (non Lotus). If this was started in the 90s would have been a HUGE success.
The delorean is a very cool car .The only things that stopped people wanting to buy one is the crappy renault v6 engine no performance if i was buying a sports car the engine perfomance is everything not just because the gullwing doors and the stainless body it needed to be 150 mph sports car and it wasnt and the engine was noisey and loud . The price tag of 26 grand nobody wanted to buy the car for that over the top price it just isnt the quality car that it should have been when it was just made from parts from other cars
There were very few cars that did 150mph in 1981. A 5.3L V12 Jag XJS only did 140-145mph, the 1984 Corvette only did 140mph, 911 Turbo might have done 150mph, Countach probably did 160-170mph, Ferrari 512bb might have hit 160mph.
The car was sold perfectly well in 81. Do you know about the economical crisis in fall 81 and the worst winter in decades in the states?. The reason of the fail was the decision to produce too many cars. About the performance.. Check the figures of an 81 "muscle cars" and vettes... The Delorean is faster than most of them
Sad story. DeLorean' s car vision was not understood. This car is timeless !!!
I was only 13 years old in 1981. I never heard of the DeLorean before.
This was very interesting. A lot of cool footage you usually don't get to see. I bet with the movie coming the views on this video will skyrocket.
They're finally going to make a movie of this?.....,cool
This is a no BS documentary.
There's someone in my area that brings their DeLorean to a high school classic car show every fall.

Very enjoyable

Being rushed to market didn't help. a few more months and maybe they could have sourced a beefier powerplant.
He attacked the British automakers regularly I doubt they would have been willing to help him out

Poor team? All the senior executives came from de auto industry with lots of experience. Make some research.
