    Good video. Right to the point without a lot of jabbering. I'm going to put a wrap of electrical tape to protect the pump cylinder.

  • @jenilee8703

    It worked perfectly. We didn't do any changes to the file itself & it still did the job. Who would've thought all we needed was a BASTURD file & some pliars. Thank you so much. I wouldn't have gotten to check mine without this tip.

    Thanks for sharing I recommend your method to anyone who only needs to remove one or two.
    I also would probably wrap tape around the file to protect the pumps bore. 😆👍😎

    This a good opportunity to tell how important it is to oil your pump regularly, especially before storage

    there is virtually zero need to EVER remove the check valve. spray carb cleaner or seaform in pump throat. about 1" deep. tilt lantern so pump cyl is vertical. let soak for 3 hrs. dump out cleaner and check valve by suck/blow test. if u can blow into the fount via checkvalve, add a big shot of 3 in 1 oil. assymble pump and pump up fount a few times

    I actually had the issue, I sprayed some PB into the valve where the ball sits. It freed the ball and now it works just fine.

    Absolutely smooth out the edges of the file. It can, and most probably will scratch the pump bore, witch is not replaceable.

    • @tundramanq
      @tundramanq 3 роки тому +5

      Or put duct tape on the file edges. Scratching the pump bore will eat up leather or rubber cups.

    I used a large hexagonal shaft flathead screwdriver and a crescent wrench. That valve had me sweating and shaking like a dog passing a peach pit but it eventually broke loose.
    Chewed up the valve pretty good in the process. Incredibly tight!

  • @anthonycolbourne4206
    @anthonycolbourne4206 6 місяців тому

    I made my own removal tool with a tire iron. (One with a flat hubcap tool end) Only minimal grinding to shape it so it fits snugly, (that is VERY important), and the bent end that is normally for removing the lugnut provides a good handle to twist. The slot gap in the check valve is quite wide, and if you try using a screwdriver, they don't match and you will just end up damaging or breaking the checkvalve cap.

    Hi! Wrap the file with a rubber to not scratch the cylinder. Thanks for posting!

  • @johns6816

    I tried this with an unmolested file and quit after using a fair amount of force. I did not want to break the file or screw up the CV. What finally worked was a day and a half of white vinegar. I had previously tried MEK and IPA. In a bad case I don't think it would be crazy to fill the tank with vinegar up to the level of the CV.
    Well worth buying a set of gunsmithing screw drivers to fit critical screws well...just as an aside.

  • @BigLewBBQ

    Great idea. I use a 5/8 spade drill bit that I cut the point of of with a Dremel. It has a hex shape on the end and o use small wrench. It works well but it has failed twice when I didn’t pre soak the check valve in WD40. That file may be a better solution.

    • @crabtrap
      @crabtrap 6 років тому +1

      on your spadebit tool,; take a 14mm/1/2" drive socket, insert it into pump-throat, this acts as a guide for the spade bit, it takes up all the play in the skinny bit shaft. 3/8 drive may work too and even tighter fit.

    Instead of the channel locks, use a large ADJUSTABLE WRENCH that you open up just enough to slip over the file down low. You then just push down or pull up. NO SQUEEZING. You can use the wrench again on similar metal work.

    @bigstick5278 6 років тому +1

    A hex shaft cold chisel grind the end to shape slip a rubber tube over the shaft so it won't scratch your pump sleeve. The tighter the fit with the rubber tube inside the pump sleeve the less chance you will have of it slipping off the CV head. The hex design will allow you to use a wrench and not pliers or vice grips that can slip. I rarely need to replace a check valve for me to buy a tool to use it only once or twice. If i was a Coleman hoarder i would buy the tool.
    I have a 550B stove that needs a check valve replaced. But it's hard not to be a hoarder when you can pick Coleman lamps and stoves up for $5.00 to $10.00 at thrift stores and yard sales.

    • @crabtrap
      @crabtrap 6 років тому

      we have a desease! HEhE! i agree tho, the check valve can be freed in the lantern by carb cleaner IN TANK side AND bore side, then seafoam soak for a day again. it usually looses up then

    Ty for that. That's the only thing that worked for me I still have a problem. I removed the check valve and it is still holding pressure. I can take plunger, put it in and it's like it's been pumped 50 times. My problem is that my lantern isn't getting fuel. I took on off valve off top of tank. HELP PLEASE.

    • @Tsheppar78
      @Tsheppar78  7 років тому

      Its very possible you have a clog after the checkvalve. The checkvalve pumps into a little tube that goes up to the top of the fount. Have you tried high pressure air shot thru with the check valve removed ? If you type in " Coleman Cutaway " on UA-cam you can see videos of people who have sawed the fount in half so that you can see what the little tube Im talking about looks like. Maybe this will help :)

      jason tindal yoooo! Your generator tube is probably plugged! Put a new one in it!

    • @bigstick5278
      @bigstick5278 7 років тому

      jason tindal::: Has the new generator worked? If not the fuel feed tube inside the tank can get clogged with just a tiny speck of debris and hose up your lamp or stove. Looking inside the tank with a tiny flashlight is it rusty or any sort of loos material that can get into the fuel? If so that would be the problem.

    • @jasontindal2525

    • @anthonycolbourne4206

      If the check ball is seized in place (not floating freely and passing air as it should be) test..when you hold your thumb over the hole on the pump rod and push the pump rod in all the way 8 or 10 times, that air you just compressed will normally go inside the tank... keeping your thumb over the hole, push the pump rod in all the way. IF THE CHECK VALVE IS SEIZED you will know by keeping your thumb over the hole at the end of the pump and relieving some of the force you are using to push in... if the pump rod pushes back out on it's own as you relieve force... the check valve is stuck.

  • @mikemorgan5015
    @mikemorgan5015 11 місяців тому +1

    This is like performing brain surgery with a sawzall. C'mon man! The proper tools go for around 30 bucks and will be at your door in 2 days along with the new check valve you should probably order. If you only have one to fix, sell the damn thing on eee bay for 29 bucks as "only used once". At least wrap some cloth or paper towel around the damn file to keep from scarring up the pump tube. My best recommendation is to not store your lantern in the rain for the better part of a decade. Many, many Coleman appliances have been permanently destroyed during check valve removal attempts. The proper tool leaves no chowder marks and the check valve will be factory perfect on the brass when you remove it. It's your lantern/stove. Use your best judgement before proceeding.

    So let me say my check valve ball is loose and i hear it rattle. Without it i can blow air by mouth in tube. I can blow air through check valve and cannot suck in for pressure, i hear now it can be air inlet tube.

    • @bigstick5278
      @bigstick5278 6 років тому +1

      mixwell1983::: I pumped up my 550B stove take out the check valve rod and pour some fluid down the pump sleeve. If you see little bubbles coming out of the check valve it's beat. The back pressure in the tank should push the ball to close the CV if it's bubbling it is not doing that.

    • @anthonycolbourne4206
      @anthonycolbourne4206 6 місяців тому

      If the "leather" cup inside the pump tube is dry, it won't be able to compress the air no matter how much you pump. If you have the older original actual leather cup, you may be able to soften the leather with some Neats Footoil or similar leather treatment, or simply replace the cup end with a new one, either nylon or leather.

    By the way i didnt hace a file your size(larger) and tried a large Ass screwdriver but length doesnt matter as much as width (insert sex joke) nobody should have to struggle so much with these fucking check valves.
