The fact that Joe Pesci wanted to do The Irishman after decades of retirement and once he came back, he delivered best performance and gained Oscar noms along with Al Pacino.
1:31 I'm an Italian guy and when I saw this moment of the scene was just beautiful. What he's saying is "Mangia figlio mio, che cresci" (Eat son so you'll grow up) and that's a beautiful insight of an Italian expression often used by mothers and sometimes from fathers. In Italy, even when you're old, you parents will always say this thing to show you their affection and the fact they care for you. His character here is still taking care of his disciple, his metaforic "son", by inviting him to eat in order to "grow up". Scorsese, Leone, Kubrick, all these legendary directors are characterized by their attention to details like this. Sometimes even small talk or apparently unimportant phrases can hide a great insight of a culture or a character's development.
@@stalinskaya9516 wow, it's actually really really close to Italian, I don't know why but it sounds like the Italian phrase pronounced by a Portuguese person 😂😂

Pesci does not need any more awards, but it's still incredible that he did not win literally everything for what is one of the greatest acting performance in the last quarter of the century *at least*. The movie is far from perfect, but the fact that we saw these two together on screen again - and got a very different, very layered "Scorsese performance" from Pesci is a blessing. Just a thing of beauty.
The way Frank dips his bread in the grape juice even though he doesn't need to...so Russell won't feel embarrassed by having to do so. Damn, that speaks to me.
Man the saddest part is that russel never had kids, and really wanted them, and that "mangia che cresci figlio mio" is something that every italian grandpa or grandma has said and he never got to.
I love that this is the only time in decades they actually speak about what Russ had Frank do to Jimmy. It's the only honest eulogy Jimmy gets from these two, and yet it's all that they really need; they understand each other so well that there's no need for a big speech, a couple of sentences and eye contact is all that's necessary.
This made me think about how De Niro (outside of playing young Vito in Godfather II) he never played an Italian-American “made man.” He’s always played Irish or Jewish in all him most well known roles.

Thanks Netflix for supporting the making of this film.
Pesci was phenomenal, as was DeNiro. DeNiro has been working all this time, keeping his skills ever so sharp as usual. But for Pesci to deliver such a performance after such a long hiatus was magnificent. This movie is a masterpiece.
So happy Pesci came out of retirement for this film. He really knocked it out of the park with this performance!
Pesci was so unbelievably good in this.
It breaks my Hart seeing these 2 legends getting old I was raised on them
They were aged ffs
This is a true masterpiece of visual effects and acting from Joe Pesci
Wow, the de-aging tech really makes them look 30 years younger
Looking at this... I'll tell ya, “Getting old ain't for the faint of heart.”
The beauty of youth fades with the wisdom of time...
Best scene in the movie. When he ask 'good' grape juice cause it was smuggled red wine.😂😂😂😂😂
“Mangia che cresci ...” = “eat so you grow up” .
A 60years old man to another 60 years old man.
Legends 💥
More like 80 to 60 maybe
The way Frank dips his bread in the grape juice even though he doesn't need to...so Russell won't feel embarrassed by having to do so. Damn, that speaks to me.
Dude they dip it because they ate it like that earlier in the movie
dipping bread in wine is a common italian delicacy. and they do so earlier in the film too. they just use grape juice here as a replacement for wine.
You guys better get off instagram, tiktok and the internet and live your lives while you can still chew bread.
original
A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man
@andy moore, oh shut up
And who are you to tell people what to do?
@Adam Superhuggy wow you hate yourself
Pesci coming out of retirement to put on a masterclass, what a guy
Goddamn I'm glad Joe Pesci came out of retirement for this, a genius actor.
Man i grew up woth pesci im really gonna miss his movies. He probably the greatest actor still alive today and doesnt even know it.
Man Joe is such a good actor. I actually feel sad looking at him like this in this scene.
This might be the last movie that this iconic Joe,Bob,Al and marty work together we are lucky to watch them ❤
This could be the best ending for the movie "Casino"
It's gonna be an extremely sad day when we lose these two. There will never be another like them.
Those who didn’t like this movie don’t appreciate the acting, the actual story behind it, true cinema, and actual mob movies.
In movie or real life jimmy got killed because of his attitude.
Arrogant?
Stubbornness, wouldn’t listen to anyone, Frank was on the verge of tears trying to get Jimmy to listen
De Nero acting like an angry old man….he’s a natural.
Just want you guys to know that Pesci right here looks EXACTLY like my uncle Frank.
Son I'm telling you this movie and scene still rips me apart
Why is the scene so chopped up in this video? The original scene doesn't have 1-second time-skip cuts everywhere
Copy right and it doesn’t get taken down the kinda how UA-cam videos are with certain movies the companies that own them would rather have you go watch the movie then watch it on UA-cam
It blows my mind when people overlook the greatness or this film.
I feel Martin has sacrificed everything for the sake of cinema. Bravo 👏🏻
What did he sacrifice?
this guys is real actors, joe pesci deserve one oscar by this scene.
The good grape juice is definitely the fermented kind(vino)😂
Yup lol it’s true, only way to eat that bread with it,..
0.30, Pesci's face tells everything, what an actor! Only with one expression he could tell us how hard is to be an old men.
And people think I'm crazy when I say reaching 50 will do me.
This whole movie was amazing. A whole different cinematic dynamic
Pesci should've won best supporting actor. He brought the actor back out of DeNero.
All the Italian expression are just perfect coming from Pesci
Pesci is excellent. He's a funny guy.
Joe Pesci wearing his shoes like that... what a great fuckin actor, legend
Me and my best friends when we know each other for more than 5 years
Your lucky if you’re friends with the same friends for 5 years. My best friend of 10 years stopped being my friend. Got a gf who didn’t like me and broke off ties with me. 10 years best friends too. Sucks.
Their acting is "ruthless", Pesci is just....amazing.
