blueberrycobbler I read that months ago, look them up in, its not like it is a secret that James Dean was sexually active with men, which part was it that you find it hard to believe?
Nooo...Not true..Sal was 16 in this movie..this was a Warner Brothers picture...The Censors were Extremely strict in the 1950s, more so than in the 30s...James was 24..Sal was 16..No way.. What is true is that they had Plato gay and looking for a father figure..at that time, the theory was that if you were missing your father in your life, you could turn out gay..hungering for male love..and James told the Director that Sal should look at him the way he looks at Natalie Wood..
@@sandrahernandez569 To be honest, I kinda think there's some truth to that theory, as I'm bisexual myself, had a disastrous relationship with my father, and I began crushing on a male professor of mine (I'm a college student) and I already had a history in high school of trying to get parent-type relationships with my teachers. Nevertheless, I don't see the boyfriend I have now as a father-like figure, really.
Without even seeing the whole movie, one can feel the strong chemistry between the two. What a tragic end to something so beautiful between two people. But it reminds me of the old saying on namely on James Dean's part, " you don't miss a good thing (you never realize how much you loved [it/someone]) until they're gone.

I’ve been waiting for this my whole damn life lmao-I didn’t know what it was about Plato when I watched the movie as a kid, but grew older I saw myself in him, it’s so wonderful to know the queerness was intentional and that Sal & James gave this rep to gayby me like wow they DID that. Thanks for this comp - was laughing at first but damn if the ending didn’t make me cry like it always does
James Dean and Sal Mineo had so much chemistry, arguably more so than James and Natalie in the movie. The fact that they were both gay/bi doesn't seem an accident as far as casting choices go.
James talked about wanting to portray a homosexual love affair explicitly, as did Sal. If you can believe it, the screenplay was even gayer and this was the toned down version for the Hollywood censors
I remember watching this when I was 12 and haven’t noticed that.. I’m full grown gay now and recently rewatched it and I was so surprised.. that’s why I liked the movie
I'm laughing at "full grown gay" for some reason????? first of all it feels like we're talking about an exotic species of animal or smth and second of all are any of us (gays) ever actually really grownups tbh
I know there was a kiss between Sal and James in the script but I'm still scratching my head wondering where would it be located. Maybe somewhere in the mansion segment?
Jolyn Henry Same that’s what I was thinking as well 6:39 the way he’s standing close to him and his eyes and whole body just screams I WANT TO KISS JAMES DEAN 😍
The scene outside Jim's house makes sense, but I like the idea of it being in the night planetarium scene, with Plato in Jim's jacket and the stars spinning around them
Im 29. I saw this movie on turner classic movies one night when i was bored with nothing to watch in my late teens. The energy between James and Sal was immediately noticeable but I think my mind was playing tricks on me. Turns out I was right, and I’m glad I was. The chick (dont even know her name) wasnt even needed in this movie lol. Coulda just left her out. Anyways, Sal’s pretty dreamy
franksmith16 The “chick”was Natalie Wood. She died from drowning at age of 43, Sal Mineo was killed at age of 37, and James Dean died in auto accident at age 24. But I do agree that Natalie Wood’s role was to simply be the female between James Dean and Sal Mineo, to lessen any awareness of a possible connection between the 2 guys.
That "chick" was needed, so the two main characters could form a complete family - mother and father - to young Plato. Notice in the film how they mocked their parents. It was meant as a cautionary warning: look after your kids and love them unconditionally. Or you will lose them.
Remember the chicken race and the knife blade fight? James died in a drag race. Sal died getting stabbed. Edit: I made a slight mistake in James death, thanks for Gene below for pointing it out. James didn't die in a drag race, but rather, he died _driving_ to one. He always found car racing to be fun, and made it his hobby/another optional source of income. It was certainly tragic, with him being only 24, but he always said that he would like to die that way, while being young. Sal, on the other hand, turned to stage performance, and a few days after getting it on, he was mugged near his appartment and let to die. He never quite got over James' death (he never made it a secret that he had feelings for him), so, sure, their deaths where horrible, and the three main leads died in unnatural ways, but hey, if there is a place to go after fading, the three friends can still be a family wherever they are.
Excellent point- what Irony. Even more- there's the scene where Jim, Sal and Nat run into an empty pool in the abandoned mansion. Wood died by drowning in 1981. Their inevitable deaths, though revealed, are cryptic messages in this grim film.
I like what u said... in my mind Id like to think James & Sal met Natalie at the gates & james put his arm around her & said "kid, lemme buy u a drink. Youve had a rough night" and natalie said " drink? Here? " And Sal said " best milk youve ever tasted up here" ... And they all walked off into the sunset ..
The Jim Stark character was comfortable enough with his own sexuality to befriend his closeted gay classmate, the Plato character, who probably had a crush on Jim. Like the Jim, both the Judy character and Plato do not fit into the expectations of the time; they are all rebels who found each other - but ultimately, the expectations of the time won out. I think in high school or in college, we all had that one straight guy who befriended us and upon whom we developed a crush and we became best friends with him and his girlfriend. It is why we can relate to this storyline so much.
There may be a clue in the name of ‘Plato’ - after all it was the Ancient Greek Philosopher Plato who introduced to the world the notion of ‘platonic love’....
That true. Much? I'm young gay adult who loves old classics and discover more back then gays movies and lesbians as well. Been founding more about it since middle to my teenagers days then now. The director wanted to have a good chemistry between the actors, James and Sal eventually fell for each other and was in a relationship. This was confirmed by the director himself. upon knowing that the two actors fell for one another, He actually wanted to put a scene where James and Plato Kiss each other, but the headstudio rejected the idea as it is too controversial.
James Dean was such a fascinating person, I have never heard of him before yesterday, ive read two biographies of him today haha
farhan rafi Source your statements..
blueberrycobbler I read that months ago, look them up in, its not like it is a secret that James Dean was sexually active with men, which part was it that you find it hard to believe?
Sal Mineo was bisexual, not gay.
But it reminds me of the old saying on namely on James Dean's part, " you don't miss a good thing (you never realize how much you loved [it/someone]) until they're gone.
the ending fucking gets me like it's just fkin heartbreaking
You haven’t seen it, but you saw this and made up your mind so the narrative that you want to see is confirmed? Sheesh.
The puppy love is too adorable.

i typed in "chaotic bisexual energy" and this came up lmfao

I love a bisexual in a polyamorous relationship. An icon
reminds me of sense8 with kala, wolfgang, and rajan
Such a white female cishet thing to say
@@Patrick3183 I know this is an old comment but how? Btw I'm not white and a bisexual myself. I am cisgender but I don't see how that means anything to my comment. If you have nothing nice or important to say don't.
That's NOT the storyline 🤦♂️
Jimmy goes to walk into the girls bathroom but stops himself just before, then immediately heads to the boys bathroom where he sees Plato, subtext, that’s all I’m saying
I can't for the life of me figure out the deeper meaning behind that particular sequence of events
Thanks for this comp - was laughing at first but damn if the ending didn’t make me cry like it always does
Jolyn Henry life’s a Bitch but I’m a queen #buryyourgays
"life's a bitch but I'm a queen" what a fuckin Statement
James Dean and Sal Mineo had so much chemistry, arguably more so than James and Natalie in the movie. The fact that they were both gay/bi doesn't seem an accident as far as casting choices go.
good casting fs
Her character served no purpose whatsoever, other than to try to “sanitize” the relationship between Plato and James.
How long have you known Plato?
James Dean: Since last night. But we didnt do much talking 😎
hah! it's funny because the implication is that they were having SEX

I know there was a kiss between Sal and James in the script but I'm still scratching my head wondering where would it be located. Maybe somewhere in the mansion segment?
I don't know for sure but if it were up to me I'd have put it at the gate/garage to Jim's house like around 6:18
Omg when they turn their heads around and make a pause before Plato says goodbye! You're right that must be it
Jolyn Henry Same that’s what I was thinking as well 6:39 the way he’s standing close to him and his eyes and whole body just screams I WANT TO KISS JAMES DEAN 😍
My guess is 6:50
The scene outside Jim's house makes sense, but I like the idea of it being in the night planetarium scene, with Plato in Jim's jacket and the stars spinning around them

But I do agree that Natalie Wood’s role was to simply be the female between James Dean and Sal Mineo, to lessen any awareness of a possible connection between the 2 guys.
not here for Judy erasure tbh. but yeah tho
@@boborrahood damn
@@lusidsteamteamcaptain Okay, I just added to my comment, a year later..
He never quite got over James' death (he never made it a secret that he had feelings for him), so, sure, their deaths where horrible, and the three main leads died in unnatural ways, but hey, if there is a place to go after fading, the three friends can still be a family wherever they are.
cursed
He wasn't in a drag race. He was just out driving fast by himself.
@@genedryer-bivins8314 Thanks, pal! Already fixed it.
I love James Dean so much ohmygod this is literally a masterpiece
like what a fucking SNACK tbh
this story's concept is so sweet... they rlly dont dive like this anymore
idk mang there's some modern gems wrt story
They looks so cute together, you'd think Natalie was a third wheel.
Really kinda seems like that huh
A man taking another man's warm jacket in the old days was definitely a "yes let's be gay together" thing straights didn't know about.

This is done so well. I think I have to see the film again. Thank you, I know how much time & energy it can take to get this done this concisely.

Is that a gun in your pocket or are you-- oh ok it's a gun. Ok
I could probably see them all having a 3some with dean in the middle
👀👀👀
Literally never seen this film before but that ending made me cry
it's worth seeing just for the cultural context
I have to give this so much credit for treating his death with such emotion.
^^^ me too- he's just a fuckin /kid/ man
Dionysus that’s cause he really felt that lmao. The attraction between the actors was known on the DL
There may be a clue in the name of ‘Plato’ - after all it was the Ancient Greek Philosopher Plato who introduced to the world the notion of ‘platonic love’....
you know what you might actually have a point here
This is more gayness than some of the recent modern gay movies have, wild
Not more than Venom but yeah
That true. Much? I'm young gay adult who loves old classics and discover more back then gays movies and lesbians as well. Been founding more about it since middle to my teenagers days then now. Much James Dean and paul Newman? Wonder that ever was true. I love think of both of them having intercoursing
i was in a community theater production of the play when i was 17 and now i wear a leather jacket, have a fraught relationship with my parents, and kiss men. really makes you think!!!! thanks for the supercut so i can send it to my gay high school friends who were also in that play
did the play make you gay or did it bring out the gay that was there all along??? a mystery
Sal Mineo said he was bisexual in his biography and James Dean was known to be sexually ambiguous
boom, vindication
I love that goofy laugh james does when he grabs platos nose lol
"heuhuehuhh"
film class in high school 1991 we watched this, we had never seen it before. We quickly realized this was the gayest thing we had ever seen in our lives, even after the 80s, and we were astonished this was a big budget WB movie event in the 50s because it was gay, gay, gay from the first second of the movie.
Truly can't believe this was a real film made available to the general public in the mid 20th century
“It’s JUST the gay shit” and the video is almost a third of the whole movie 😂
Even though James was the Hollywood heartthrob in the film, I think Sal Mineo was sooo cute.
Also, an underrated stud of this film-the villain, Buzz. Hot!! Sad ending though…for him lol
