    Its amazing how the dirt doesn't collapse and kill most of them

      Super Toaster They have had millions of years of evolution to figure out how to make tunnels that don't collapse :-P

      The dirt is moist so the dirt will not collapse

      the ants would push the dirt in the walling of the tunnels to make them safe

  • @Matt68046

    Ants will not build tunnels if the area is bright. Professionals use pre-made nests with plaster or pumice already in the shape of a nest. They do make this material you can tape to the front to make it darker if you still must see them dig.

  • @drew2000four
    @drew2000four  12 років тому

    I made it myself. About 4ft of wood cut into 4 pieces, 2 pieces of clear plexi-glass, hinge, weather stripping (to seal around the top), and glue. I had the glue and weather striping already, so the other material only cost about $15.

    I just put a small piece of bread with a dab of maple syrup on it in there. They seemed to like that.

  • @drew2000four
    @drew2000four  11 років тому

    If you make it thin enough they will build next to the glass. The first few days they built all the tunnels out but then started to paste dirt on the glass to block the light. You could still see in but it was a little obscured.

    Do it! It was really fun and I learned a lot. My total build time was about an hour and the cost was about $15-$20. Well worth it.

    It must suck when they finally realise the biggest chamber they can build is only an inch wide.
    I feel claustrophobic just thinking about it

    Hi im very interested in building one of these T.T couple questions.
    Did you manage to find an ant queen ?
    If no, how long did these ants sustain inside ?
    Did you add more ants inside ?
    What happens after this.

    Did the ants die

  • @horax2000
    @horax2000 11 років тому +1

    ants eventually died even with food and water, as per the video and the pattern the ants build, there is a queen, otherwise the just made tunnels like tree branches, they don't have a certain purpose, there is no queen to keep alive

    When I get bored with my Ant Farm or when it reaches to a point where I become worried about it's size, I pour bleach into their holes :D and my new experiment is to get two different type of Ants to grow to a big nest size then bridge their tanks together and watch them fight to the death lol

    • @NeoShineLP
      @NeoShineLP 8 років тому +1

      cook soil if you get a new colony but if you take them from the wild it should be fine. Cooked soil prevents from viruses that kill the colony and every ant digs pretty much except some which build tree nests out of leafs.

      Something to do with contaminating a certain area with an ants species thats not native, your not allowed to move ant species across any boarders in the world.

    • @drew2000four
      @drew2000four  8 років тому

      Yes, you're right. You can't move queens much further than a few hundred miles. It makes ecommerce really hard.

    Please be careful when purchasing or chasing queens, there are millions of queens, Ok, but I dont see millions of nests, so there are really short posibilities for ants to build a new one, take in count that fire ants are driving other ants into extintion, buy them only if you make sure you purchase the grown in captivity as any other pet should
